Gold Medalist Woman Athlete charged with raping another Woman

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 03:05 PM PDT

Pinki PramanikPinki Pramanik , the Woman Athlete who won Gold Medal in 2006 Asian Games, has been alleged of being a Man and has been charged with Rape case by another Woman.

Pinki Pramanik (born 10 April 1986 in Purulia) is an Indian track athlete who specialises in the 400 metres and800 metres.

“Pramanik has been detained after we received a complaint by a woman who said that the athlete is a man and accused him of torturing, raping and trying to kill her,” Deputy Commissioner, Bidhannagar (North 24 Parganas) Subrata Bandyopadhyay said.

“We approached the court Thursday seeking permission for medical test to determine the gender of the athlete and the same has been granted. The test will be conducted at the Barasat sub-divisional hospital shortly,” added Bandyopadhyay.

The alleged victim, a divorcee and a mother of one, who had been living with Pramanik since the last several months, in her police complaint, alleged that the athlete had coerced her to a live-in relationship promising marriage. She has alleged that she was often beaten, tortured and frequently raped.

Following the complaint, Pramanik was taken to a private nursing home for a medical checkup where the test reports showed that the athlete was indeed a male.

“The reports conducted by us show that Pramanik is a male,” said Subrata Mukherjee of Uma Nursing Home where the test was conducted.

The athlete refused to undergo a second test at a government hospital and claimed it was a conspiracy to frame her.

“It’s a clear case of conspiracy,” said Pramanik adding that she took part in major international events, where medical tests to determine her gender have already been done.

Pramanik won gold in 4×400 meters relay at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha (Qatar). She was a silver medalist at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games the same year.

Now a ticket collector with the Eastern Railway, she retired from athletics three years ago.

She courted controversy earlier when an unauthorised gun was found from her possession at a railway station.

The revelation has also shocked the sport’s governing body.

“I am totally shocked. She has participated in major international events where medical tests are mandatory. I agree that gender verification test is a complex process but how can people go wrong everywhere? Pramanik also had a medical (examination) before she joined the Railways,” West Bengal Athletics Association secretary Kamal Moitra said.

The association has called an executive committee meeting Friday to decide the future course of action.

“If it is medically proved that Pramanik is not a female then we have very little ground to pursue the case,” added Moitra.

While heptathlete Soma Biswass refused to suspect her sexuality, veteran coach and Dronacharya awardee Kuntal Roy said he had his doubts.

“I have never coached her, but to be honest I always had my doubts. In fact, it’s a surprise to me that no one had raised a question in international events,” Roy said.

Australian Mining Firm MMG  has selected Wipro as its Technology Partner, under which Wipro would provide IT Solutions for managing its business.

“The multi-million dollar deal involves developing an integrated business management over the next three years to MMG, with a common operating platform for its cross-country assets,” Wipro senior vice-president for energy, natural resources and utilities Anand Padmanabhan said in a statement here.

As a mid-tier global resources firm, the Melbourne-based MMG is one of the world’s largest producers of zinc and substantially of copper, lead, gold and silver. It also exploresa nd develops base metal projects in Australia, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

“We have selected Wipro as our strategic partner to transform key management systems and provide a foundation for growth and simplification,” MMG’s chief operating officer Marcelo Bastos noted in the statement.

The high-end IT solution will also allow the mining firm to derive value from its current and future operations by standardising its business processes and implementing a new SAP platform.

Air India to appoint new COO very soon

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 01:20 PM PDT

Air India has started looking after a new Chief Operational Officer. About 35 candidates have been shortlisted for the job. The members will scrutinise the credentials of the candidates. No time-line has been fixed, but the process is expected to pick up speed soon, sources in the company told IANS.

The management had received around 70 applications for the post after it advertised to fill the vacancy in October last year. But all 70 applicants were rejected on technical grounds or for lacking the necessary qualifications.

That’s why the airline advertised again in May this year.  The advertisement said the COO would be part of the top management team and responsible for Air India operations. He should be in a position to execute the turnaround and financial restructuring plans that aim to make the company profitable by 2018.

“Incumbent should be a commercial pilot and should have qualified on any type of aircraft in the current fleet of Air India. He will be on contract for a period of two years extendable by one year based on performance,” said the advertisement.

Expatriates, however, will not be considered for the job, said one official who is privy to the development. The rationale behind this was that an Indian will be in a better position to understand Air India’s situation.

“The company is very diverse from inside. It does very diverse operations and has to do all that within a set framework of a public sector undertaking (PSU). That’s why a candidate from either within Air India or a local will be best suited,” the official said.

In 2010, the company had hired an Austrian, Captain Gustav Baldauf, with an annual package of Rs.3 crore amidst much hue and cry by some sections of the employees.

This time around the airline has placed the fixed component of the package at 60 percent, which will be in the range of Rs.40-60 lakh per annum. The rest 40 percent of the salary will include perks and performance-linked-pay.

Baldauf resigned in early 2011 after he was served a showcause notice over his remarks to the media about the government’s interference in the company.

Urea Prices not to be increased this Financial Year

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 11:20 AM PDT

Urea prices wont be hiked this year. Central Government has deferred to hike the price of Urea by 10 percent  to next Financial year.

The hike was proposed by the fertiliser ministry to reduce the subsidy burden, limiting the excessive use of the soil nutrient in the country compared to phosphatic and potassic fertilisers. In 2011-12, urea is estimated to have contributed Rs.24,500 crore to the fertiliser subsidy bill.

“It (the proposal) has gone back to the ministry. They have to take a second look,” Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs.

Pawar opposed the proposal contending that farmers are already burdened with high cost of inputs and any increase in urea prices would hit them further. He pointed out that the hike in prices would benefit urea companies which are making huge profits, they added.

Urea price at present is fully controlled. It was last revised in April 2010 from Rs.4,830 per tonne to the current level of Rs.5,310 a tonne.  Urea is the only fertiliser that remains under full price control.

Farmers find it much cheaper to use urea as compared to other fertiliser like di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) which sells almost four-times higher at Rs 20,200 per tonne.

Earlier, an empowered group of minister had approved deregulating the key fertiliser. The government mainly provides subsidy on fertilisers, fuels and food. The difference between the cost of production and the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) is paid to manufacturers.
