Posted: 29 Feb 2012 04:33 AM PST

Achche Lal, a Class 12 dropout, did what few would dare to do in his community. Breaking taboo, the young farmer in Madhya Pradesh married a woman who was raped by bandits only two days before they were to wed.

The marriage took place in a village in Shivpuri district Tuesday, Lal told IANS.

On Sunday night, the bride’s family was in despair after a gang of robbers took away all the wedding jewellery and cash and raped the bride and her sister at gunpoint.

“It was no fault of the girl. I need to stand by her. I have married her and I will fight for her justice too,” he said.

Both families belong to the Lodhi caste.

World’s shortest man found in Nepal

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 02:40 AM PST

Chandra Bahadur DangiGuinness World Records have officially recognized Nepal’s Chandra Bahadur Dangi as the shortest man living in the world.Dangi, who is barely 56.4 cm tall, is 72-year-old and weighs just 12 kg, reported Xinhua.

He took over the record from the Filipino Junrey Balawing. He is the second Nepalese to bear the title after Khagendra Thapa Magar.

"The good news is that Chandra Bahadur Dangi is the world's shortest living man," Guiness Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday told reporters after measurements were taken.

"If he is really 72 years old he is the oldest person to be awarded the shortest-man record," Glenday said, adding Dangi was also the shortest person ever measured by the Guinness World Records.
From a poor and uneducated family in a remote part of Nepal, Dangi said he had never heard of Mount Everest and was unaware of the world record title before a timber merchant visited his remote village last month and decided to measure him.
His diminutive size has since made him a celebrity in the impoverished nation of 26.6 million people and he took a plane for the first time last week to travel from his village, Rimkholi, 267 km (167 miles) west of Kathmandu, to meet the Guiness World Records officials in the capital.
"I am good. I feel happy," Dangi said holding two framed certificates. "I want to travel around the world and spread the name of my country."
Dangi, whose parents died when he was still in his teens, lives with his brother with, he said, no desire to marry.
His family has no idea when he stopped growing as many Nepali villages still lack basic health care. Dangi has never seen a doctor in his life. Five of his brothers and two sisters are of normal size.
Dangi mostly stays at home, needing assistance to move around, preparing head straps used by villagers to carry loads.
Before Balawing, who was declared the shortest man in the world in June last year, another Nepali man, Khagnedra Thapa Magar, who stood 26.4 inches tall, held the title.

Mobile Phones to have digital Projector embedded into it

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 01:12 AM PST

iphoneSmartphones have changed the whole purpose of mobiles. It has replaced camera, Personal Digital Assistant, Music Player, City Guide and n number of things. But what’s next? MAnufacturers are planning to incorporate the projector into smartphones.

Small-size laser projectors, one to two centimetres in length can be integrated into many kinds of electronic appliances, such as digital or video cameras, gaming devices and mobile phones.

Current mobile phones are capable of showing high quality images and video, but their small size imposes limits on screen size and the viewing experience.

Integrated micro projectors could, in practice, project images the size of an A3 sheet of paper on a wall, according to researchers from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, EpiCrystals Oy and the Aalto University, working on the project.

The challenge is to develop a small, energy-efficient and luminous three-colour (RGB) light source, whose manufacturing costs can be kept low, for use in the projectors, according to a university statement.

“The project has successfully combined multi-technological know-how from VTT and its partners in the project, from manufacturing materials and the accurate focusing of laser chips all the way to production line design,” said principal scientist Timo Aalto from VTT.

“The project was launched last autumn, and we are now entering the stage where we can move from brainstorming and design to building prototypes,” said Aalto.

“We are developing an entirely new technology that is currently not in use anywhere else in the world. At the moment, there are stand-alone projectors on the market that can be connected to electronic appliances and early stage integrated projectors, but their quality and price are not competitive enough,” added Aalto.

Family uses dead son’s semen to get a Child

baby childA family is Thrissur district of Kerala has been reported to use dead son’s semen in order to get a surrogate child. They have won a verdict of a local court in this regard.

An elderly casual labourer and his wife have won the right to collect their deceased son’s semen from an infertility clinic and use it to have a surrogate child.

Ravi Kumar, 59, a casual labourer, and his 58-year-old wife Karthiyayani from Thrissur are overjoyed with the verdict. They have even found a woman who is willing to become a surrogate mother.

The couple had a son, Ratheesh, who was a student of sound engineering in Bangalore when he was diagnosed with a tumour in his testes. While he was being treated, doctors advised that his semen be collected and stored for further use. And that’s what he did. Ratheesh passed away at the age of 28 last year after contracting pneumonia.

“When we approached the infertility clinic requesting them to hand over our son’s semen, they said they can give it only if a court gives a ruling to this effect,” said Kumar.

Now the Lok Adalat in Kochi, in a ruling Monday, said the couple should make use of the semen within three months.

“We have now decided that we want to have a child from our son’s semen and we will go to any extent for it. Since it involves huge expenses, we have decided to sell our land and our small home,” said Karthiyayani, who works as a sweeper at a government hospital.
