Karnataka actress writes book on Rahul Gandhi’s Leadership

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 05:24 AM PST

rahul gandhiA Karnataka based model-cum-actress has written a book on the leadership style of Rahul Gandhi. Her book Rahul Gandhi: The Great Warrior of Indian Politics has been recently published.

Meet Lakshmi Priya, an emerging writer who released her political comment, “Rahul Gandhi: The Great Warrior of Indian Politics” at the 20th World Book Fair. Clad in denims, a cotton kurti and a big blue “bindi” and with a marked Kannada accent, the dusky model, movie actress and doctoral fellow from Bangalore is an unlikely political commentator.

“When I met Rahul Gandhi in 2007, his style of functioning prompted me to take him as a role model. I had been elected a trade union leader and he had come to Bangalore,” Lakshmi Priya told IANS.

The young writer who has appeared in six Kannada films and has taken part in the Gladrags and Kingfisher model hunt contests, is pursuing a doctorate in political management.

Lakshmi Priya was judged Miss Bangalore in 2006.

She has completed shooting for her seventh Kannada movie “Nakara” made by Sharat Hassan, the writer said.

“I met him several times between 2007 and 2010 in connection with the book. The book is an observation of Rahul Gandhi’s leadership quality and his views on rural development, rural uplift, sustainable development and his engagement with the marginalized sections of the society,” Lakshmi Priya said.

The writer said “she knew of the other biographies of Rahul Gandhi which had probed the Congress general secretary’s personal life and his party polity”.

“But my book is academic and research-based. I have not touched his personal life or his Congress politics. I have compared his policies and interaction with people from the social fringe to those by great leaders. I have drawn analogy from the Bhagwad Gita to comment on his vision of leadership,” Lakshmi Priya said.

The writer said “she was the first to approach Rahul Gandhi with an idea for a political account in 2007 when he was not the general secretary of the Congress party”.

“He knew about the book from the manuscript stage. But by the time I completed my book few more Rahul Gandhi biographies had arrived in the market,” she said.

Rahul Gandhi has three copies of her book. “I am ready with my next book on Rahul Gandhi’s views about women’s empowerment, national security and employment,” she said.

Lakshmi Priya’s book has been published by Chennai-based Manimekalai Prusuram.

Cancer medicineUnion government will be providing free generic drugs at all Public Health Centers starting from April 2012 in an effort to reduce the financial burden on patients. This was said by Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday while inaugurating the day-long National Consultation on Social Determinants of Health.

“In an attempt to provide universal healthcare, steps would be taken to provide free generic drugs at all public health facilities in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17) for reducing financial burden on patients,” said Azad.

He said that the Commission on Social Determinants of Health has outlined that unequal distribution of health damaging experiences are perpetuated by a combination of poor social policies and programmes and unfair economic arrangements, globally and nationally.

“If it means investing more for the poorer segments of society, we shall do it; if it means challenging the biases against the marginalised segments of society, we shall do it; if it means ensuring better integration of different development programmes, we shall do it; and if it means reducing out-of-pocket expenditure on healthcare for the people who cannot afford it, we shall do it,” he said.

Narayanamurthy advises students to study in Japan rather than US

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 12:14 AM PST

N.R. Narayana Murthy, the Emeritus Chairman of Software major Infosys has exhorted Indian students to study in Japanese universities, especially in the University of Tokyo, as it is not only 50 percent cheaper than in the US, but also provides an opportunity to better career prospects.

“I urge young Indians to explore Japan for higher education as it has one of the world’s best technology and research institutes. One should seize the opportunity to study in Japan as its universities are at our doorstep inviting our youngsters to make best use of the facilities and financial assistance,” Murthy told reporters at the unveiling of the University of Tokyo’s India office here.

Asserting that studying in Japan makes economic and academic sense, Murthy said at $10,000 per year an Indian student would be able to pursue higher education in contrast to paying about $20,000 per annum for studying in an American university, excluding boarding and lodging expenses.

“About 100,000 young Indians go abroad every year in pursuit of higher education, with over 75,000 of them to the US alone, while the remaining students go to Britain, Europe and Australia. Academically, the 135-year-old University of Tokyo is ranked seventh in the world and Japan is the second most innovative country after the US,” Murthy pointed out.

The 65-year-old Murthy is a member of the University of Tokyo’s president’s council.

“The University of Tokyo has been selected to be the flag-bearer of the Japanese government’s initiative to make studying in Japan as an attractive option to Indian students because of its stature and its students playing a seminal role in the success of Japan as the world’s third largest economy,” Murthy observed.

Noting that India and Japan have been sharing a close relationship over the past six decades in diverse areas, Murthy said the future looked bright for the two Asian countries with various academic and business collaborations on the anvil.

Echoing Murthy’s call, University of Tokyo alumni association chairman Shrikrishna Kulkarni said studying in Japan would give Indian students an opportunity to imbibe the spirit of innovation, absorb its extraordinary culture and learn its language.

“It’s high time Indian students started looking Far East and make Japan a preferred destination for higher education, including research and job opportunities to work in Japanese firms in India or Japan and live in its famous and safest cities such as Tokyo and Osaka,” Kulkarni added.
