FIR may be lodged against Madhur Bhandarkar for Piracy

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 08:26 AM PDT

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar might be in trouble if Delhi Court rules lodging FIR against him for Piracy. The courtwill verdict on June 27  regarding a Lady Author’s plea for  lodging an FIR agaianst him for allegedly copying the plot of his 2008 film “Fashion” from her book.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjay Sharma said that the court would June 27 decide on the plea filed by book author Seema Seth seeking compensation of Rs.2.5 crore.

“To come up June 27 for orders,” said the court, in an order made available Tuesday.

The court was hearing a plea by actress-turned-author Seth alleging that Bhandarkar stole the plot and idea for “Fashion” from her book “El Dorado” which was published three months before the release of the film Oct 29, 2008.

She requested the court to book Bhandarkar for violation of the Copyright Act, as the idea of the story had been taken from the book without permission.

Seth also made Ronnie Screwvala of UTV Motion Pictures a party in the case.

The idea has been stolen from the “book wherein the story begins in Kolkata, where an aspiring model wishes to go to Mumbai but her father opposes and mother supports” the idea.

“Careful reading of the said book vis-a-vis the story of the said movie would conclude that the story/script has been taken from the said book without my permission”, she contended.

Pinki PramanikAsian Games gold medallist athlete Pinki Pramanik, accused of being a male and currently remanded in judicial custody for alleged rape, underwent a gender determination test Tuesday, police said.

“Pramanik underwent a gender determination test at a government hospital Tuesday. The report would be available shortly,” Rajib Kumar, commissioner of police for Bidhannagar (North 24-Parganas), said.

A seven-member medical board was constituted at the Barasat sub-divisional hospital where the athlete underwent the test.

The athlete had earlier twice refused to undergo the test.

Pramanik was arrested late Thursday night and remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody by a court Friday after the athlete’s live-in partner, a divorcee and a mother of one, filed a police complaint accusing the athlete of being a male who repeatedly “raped and tortured” her.

Subsequent to the arrest, Pramanik was taken to a private nursing home for a medical check-up where the test reports showed that the former athlete was indeed a male.

Pramanik, however, claimed innocence and said it was a conspiracy.

Pramanik, who retired from athletics three years ago, won gold in the 4×400 metres relay at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha in Qatar. She was a silver medallist at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games the same year.

The Eastern Railway with which the athlete is a ticket collector Sunday suspended Pramanik following her remand to judicial custody.

After Taliban US Praises Indian Role in Afghanistan

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 05:00 AM PDT

After Taliban it is  United States’ turn to praises Indian Role in Afghanistan.
“We are pleased with the support that India is giving to strengthen security, stability, prosperity in Afghanistan,” State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters Monday in response to a question about the Taliban comment.

The US was also appreciative of “the economic support that it’s giving; the support that it’s giving to the Afghan National Security Forces, including in police training,” she said.

Nuland, who said she had not seen the Taliban’s comments about New Delhi’s role, noted: “India has joined us in calling for Afghan-Afghan reconciliation and a process to do that.”

“I’m not aware that anybody has asked India to play a direct role in that, though.”

Asked if there was a discussion between India and US at their strategic dialogue here last week about New Delhi playing a larger role in Afghanistan after the 2014 drawdown of US led forces, Nuland said: “Well, India is playing a huge role.”

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had taken note of India’s “some $2 billion worth of investment” she said. “We’re also encouraged by the East-West Road Project that India is sponsoring, which we think can play a strong role in increasing trade and investment across the region.”

“We’ve encouraged the police training programme. So all of these things are good steps and they help knit the region together in a democratic direction.”

The US itself has done a lot of work with Afghan forces, Nuland said suggesting, “There have been manifest improvements in the security situation there, and now we’re in the process of turning many of those areas over to Afghan leadership, in line with the 2014 process.”

The Taliban’s rare praise of India came in a commentary on its English language website. Calling India “a significant country in the region,” it said Indians were well aware of the “aspirations, creeds and love for freedom” of the Afghan people.

Observers in New Delhi saw the commentary as an attempt by the Taliban to assure India that it need not worry about the return of the militia to Kabul despite its close ties with Pakistan.

Shiv Sena to vote for Pranab Mukherjee as President

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 11:32 PM PDT

In a major boost to the ruling United Progressive Alliance, a key opposition alliance partner, the Shiv Sena Tuesday announced full and unconditional support to Congress candidate Pranab Mukherjee for the post of president.

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, in a statement here early Tuesday, not only announced his party’s support to Mukherjee, but also exhorted all political parties to help elect him unanimously, hours after the finance minister called Thackeray and sought his support.

“Let bygones be bygones. It is now time to think in terms of national interest. Let us all support Pranab Mukherjee unanimously and show to the world ‘hum ek hai’ (we are united),” Thackeray urged in a signed statement in Tuesday morning edition of the party mouthpiece Saamna.

This is a clear dampener to the moves by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee to put up a candidate against Mukherjee and Nationalist Congress Party leader P.A. Sangma’s aspirations to contest the presidential election.

With 11 members in the Lok Sabha, four in the Rajya Sabha, seven in the Maharashtra legislative council and 46 in the legislative assembly, the Shiv Sena is a key constituent of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which had been toying with the idea of putting up its own candidate to challenge Mukherjee.

Frowning at the ongoing developments around the presidential elections, Thackeray said that the kind of dramatics being witnessed is doing no good for the country’s image in the eyes of the world.

“People with no support base are attempting to enter the race (for presidency) and are getting exposed in the process. But this is not the occasion to analyse all this. I will conduct a post-mortem at the opportune time,” Thackeray assured.

Pre-empting any criticism of his move by the BJP and other NDA constituents, Thackeray without taking names said that people with empty hands cannot display bravado by entering the battle for the presidential elections.

“Nobody should accuse the Shiv Sena of treachery, backstabbing, fraud or cheating since we have been a victim of all these in the past,” Thackeray said.

However, he extended an olive branch by adding that the Shiv Sena wanted “to forget the past”, and urged all parties to unanimously support Mukherjee for the post of president.

India to give $10 Bn to IMF for supporting Eurozone

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 11:27 PM PDT

) India Monday pledged $10 billion to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help Eurozone countries out of the current crisis and prevent adverse fallout on emerging economies.

“The International Monetary Fund has a critical, supportive role to play in stabilizing the Eurozone. All members must help the fund to play this role,” the prime minister told the G20 Summit here.

“I am happy to announce India has decided to contribute $10 billion to IMF’s additional firewall of $430 billion,” he said, also appealing to countries with surpluses such as China to make similar contributions.

The prime minister began by congratulating the new government in Greece that is about to take office, as it has given hope that the debt-laden country will stay in the Eurozone and take up critical reforms.

“We wish them well and are encouraged by the early statements of intent.”

He, nevertheless, said the crisis in Eurozone remained worrying, as it was pulling down even emerging economies such as India and China, which were earlier on a high growth path.

“This calls for policy action on several fronts. Of greatest concern at present is the uncertainty affecting the Eurozone. The sovereign debt crisis and the banking crisis now on the horizon have grave implications for the health of the entire global economy.”

The prime minister again laid emphasis on infrastructure investment as he had in earlier G20 Summits, saying less developed and emerging economies were also facing serious problems because of the global crisis.

“Infrastructure investment in developing countries assumes special importance in this context. It lays the foundation for rapid growth in the longer term, while providing an immediate stimulus for their economies and also for the global economy, by providing a robust source of demand.”

But more infrastructure investment in developing world is only possible if they get access to long-term capital, he said, adding: “Multilateral development banks can play a major role in this context.”

Efforts were underway in India to spruce up infrastructure with massive investment and ambitious targets, he said.

The prime minister said while the performance of the Indian economy, now growing at 6.9 percent as against 8.4 percent in 2010-11, may look good to the world outside, it was not enough and that citizens expected more.

“Yet the fundamentals of the Indian economy remain strong and we are confident of bringing back the rhythm of high growth of 8-9 percent per annum.”
