Rajesh Khanna to be discharged from Lilavati Hospital in few Days

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 05:55 PM PDT

Yesteryears superstar Rajesh Khanna is much better but would have to stay in the hospital for ‘a couple of days’, said his estranged wife, actress Dimple Kapadia, who is taking care of him.

The 69-year-old actor, who was not keeping well of late, was hospitalised due to “exhaustion and weakness.”

“He is much better today (Tuesday). He is not getting discharged today. He will be back home in a couple of days,” Dimple told IANS. But his recovery will perhaps take more time.

Khanna’s manager Ashwin had said earlier this week that the actor had stopped taking food for three-four days though he was at home.

Soon after, Kaka, as the actor is fondly referred to in the industry, emerged at the balcony of his house Aashirwad on Carter Road in suburban Bandra to wave at his fans and media persons.

His son-in-law, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, assured media that Khanna was “hearty and healthy,” but the senior actor was admitted to the hospital two days later.

Earlier in April too the actor was admitted to the hospital after he complained of uneasiness and exhaustion.

In April, the actor was admitted to hospital after he felt uneasy and weak, and was discharged after about three days.

Fondly called ‘Kaka’ by his fans, his golden era started with the 1969 blockbuster ‘Aaradhana’, which was followed by hits like ‘Do Raaste’, ‘Safar’, ‘Kati Patang’ and ‘Anand’.

In 1973, he married Dimple and has two daughters with her – Twinkle and Rinke. They separated in 1984.

Their elder daughter Twinkle is married to Akshay Kumar and Rinke is married to London-based investment banker Samir Saran.

After staying away from the limelight for years, Rajesh Khanna recently featured in Havell’s fan new ad campaign called – Havells Fans Forever.

Surjeet Singh from Punjab to be released from Pakistan Jail

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 05:11 PM PDT

It is not Sarabjit Singh , but  Surjeet Singh who would be freed from Pakistan Jail.
When  reports emerged that Pakistan was to free Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh,Pakistani Authorities clarified that another Indian prisoner named Surjeet Singh, who has been in jail for three decades, would be released instead.
“I think there is some confusion. First, it is not a case of pardon. More importantly, it is not Sarabjit. It is Surjeet Singh, son of Sucha Singh. His death sentence was commuted in 1989 by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan on the advice of then prime minister Benazir Bhutto,” presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar was quoted as saying by Geo News.

Law Minister Farooq Naek Tuesday conveyed to the interior ministry that Surjeet Singh had completed his life term in jail and ought to be released and sent back to India, Babar said.

Keeping him in jail any longer will be illegal confinement, he said.

Any references to President Asif Ali Zardari in the entire matter were “out of context”, the presidential spokesman said.

Surjeet Singh, currently being held in Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, has been in Pakistani captivity for over 30 years. He was captured near the border with India on charges of spying during the era of military ruler Zia-ul-Haq.

Earlier in the day, media reports said Zardari had converted Sarabjit Singh’s death sentence to life imprisonment and directed authorities to release him if he had completed his prison term.

Sarabjit Singh’s family claim he had crossed into Pakistan inadvertently in August 1990 in an inebriated state and was arrested there.

But Pakistani police say Sarabjit Singh, who is known as Manjit Singh there, was involved in acts of terrorism. A resident of Bhikhiwind township along the border, Sarabjit has been languishing in Pakistani jails since then.

He was convicted of staging four bombings in Lahore and Multan in 1990 that killed at least 14 people.

Students in Kolkata develop oxygen saving device

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 04:02 PM PDT

Three students of a Howrah engineering college claim to have designed a device which reduces wastage of oxygen during ventilation and acts as a non-invasive ventilator.

The device, named Oxy-Con (oxygen control), has been developed by Nilanjan Ghosh with help of Dipayan Jash and Akram Ali, all third-year students at MCKV Institute of Engineering (MCKIVE), college officials said Tuesday.

The device can bring down the cost for an hour’s continuous oxygen supply from Rs.50 to Rs.17, said Ghosh.

“The ratio between inhaling and exhaling is 1:2, which means the total inspiration time is just 20 seconds. As such, the effective oxygen per minute is just 20 seconds while the wastage is 40 seconds,” he said.

“The Oxy-Con, which pauses during expiration, will help save a large amount of oxygen for a patient on ventilation,” Ghosh said.

He said the device could foretell when the gas pressure would reach less than four kg which was the time for cylinder replacement.

Ghosh said he got the idea to develop the device from his father, a medical researcher.

He said the device could supply oxygen as per the patient’s requirement.

The device could be used at home, nursing homes or rehabilitation institutions on patients with chronic breathing ailments or illnesses that require long-term ventilator assistance, he said.

“Hundreds of patients fail to get positive support in health care system in our country. This low-cost device will help those below the poverty line,” said A.K. Sanyal, medical director, Ruby General Hospital.

“We plan to send this device to various hospitals and the market,” said K.K. Kejriwal, the college’s managing trustee.

He said, however, only registered pilgrims will be allowed to proceed towards the holy cave.

The Governor, who is also the chairman of SASB, upon his return from the shrine, visited the Nunwan base camp here and interacted with the pilgrims. He also took stock of the arrangements made for them.

Railways to again hike Passenger Fares in July

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 10:04 AM PDT

Indian RailwaysCome July and Travelling in Trains would be costly. The Fares of AC and First Class is going to be hiked by 3.6 Percent indicating an end of Mamata Bannerjee’s effect on Railways.

It is said that finance Ministry is not willing to extend the Service Tax Subsidy to Railways.  The sources said railway minister Mukul Roy had written a letter to finance minister Pranab Mukherjee last week requesting exemption for railways from paying service tax, but the request has gone unheeded so far.
While the railway board is believed to be finalising the modalities for increase in fares, they said a fresh request has been made by the board today to the finance ministry for a review.

The hike would put an additional burden on travellers on AC classes. Fares in AC-I and AC-II was increased by about 20% in this year’s Rail Budget.

Service tax on passenger travel and freight was introduced in the general budget for 2009-10, but was kept on hold due to the then railway minister Mamata Banerjee’s opposition.

The exemption has been extended since then on quarterly basis but this time the Finance Ministry has decided to exclude freight charges and AC rail travel from the negative list, which gets service tax exemption.

With freight and passenger fares enjoying a 70% subsidy, the impact on the increase in freight charges and fares of First Class and AC-I, AC-II and AC-III will be 3.6%.

Bihari Engineer’s Wife asks CM to intervene in her Husband’s arrest

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 08:58 AM PDT

The wife of Bihar engineer Fasih Mehmood, who has been missing since he was allegedly arrested in Saudi Arabia and deported to India, Tuesday questioned the “silence” of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the central government’s failure to trace him.
“I fail to understand Nitish Kumar’s silence on the issue and his reluctance to give us an assurance of help to trace my husband,” Nikhat Parveen told newspersons here after submitting a memorandum to the state governor.

She said the chief minister should have raised the issue of her husband, who is from Bihar. “It appears to me that he has no time for this genuine issue.”

Parveen said she would request the president, the prime minister and the chief justice of the Supreme Court to help in tracing her missing husband.

She said she had full faith in the apex court before which she filed a plea in this regard.

The apex court earlier this month issued notice to the home and external affairs ministries over the disappearance of Mehmood.

The 35-year-old engineer, who hails from a village in Darbhanga district, was reportedly arrested in Saudi Arabia May 14 for alleged terror links in India. But he has been untraced since then.
