Maharashtra Farmers protest against Massive Toll Collection on Road

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 06:08 PM PDT

A group of Farmers in Maharashtra under the banners of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS) have come out agianst the massive Toll collection by state on National Highways across the state.

Earlier MNS Chief Raj Thackeray started a movement to stop these Toll Collection and VJAS have lent their support to him.

Describing it as a ‘Tollgate scam’, VJAS founder-president Kishor Tiwari demanded a probe into the alleged nexus of the politicians with the toll collection racket.

‘The initiative taken by Raj Thackeray’s MNS to expose is unholy cartel of top political leaders will certainly stop this flood of tolls and people will have liberty to move freely in this so-called liberated democratic India,’ Mr Tiwari said in a statement, released from Nagpur, yesterday. He also said that when anti-corruption crusaderAnna Hazare demanded closure of all toll ‘nakas’ in the state and threatened stir, PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal surprisingly closed more than 27 MSSRDC tolls to pacify him, but three months after all tolls were reopened.

Farmers’ advocacy organisation Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS) Sunday lent its support to the ongoing protest against toll collection across the state led by Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

“We fully support the stir against rampant corruption and massive exploitation at all toll collection booths throughout Maharashtra and demanded the probe into high toll rates here,” said Kishor Tiwari, president of VJAS.

Quoting a study by Transport Corporation of India and IIM Calcutta, Tiwari said that slow truck speeds on highways and delays at toll plazas are costing the country about Rs.60,000 crore a year, a recent survey suggests.

“But what is more shocking is that more than Rs.60,000 crore a year are been collected by the BOT (build-operate-) operators through unjustified and unlawful levy from innocent transporters,” he alleged.

Tiwari said that it is shocking that a car owner driving from Nagpur to Hyderabad on the National Highway 7 faces 12 toll booths and ends up paying Rs.750 only as toll charges.

“Last year, social activist Anna Hazare had demanded closure of all toll booths and threatened a stir. Over 27 toll booths were shut down, but they were reopened only within three months,” Tiwari said.

“This clearly speaks of the unholy nexus between political parties,” he added.

VJAS demanded that a committee be set up to look into the “Tollgate” and claimed that the scam will be bigger than the “Coal-gate” scam.

“If appropriate measures are not taken to bring down toll charges, VJAS will boycott toll charges at all the booths on National Highway 7,” Tiwari said.

Saina Nehwal satisfied with her Game in recent Days

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 05:06 PM PDT

saina nehwalBadminton Queen Saina Nehwal yesterday said that  staying relaxed in crunch situations helped her win two titles in as many weeks and she is not thinking about the London Olympics yet.

Saina beat the formidable Li Xuerui of China 13-21, 22-20, 21-19 to win her third Indonesia Open title in four years. The World No.5 had won the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold event in Bangkok last Sunday.

“It has been a long two weeks and I just can’t believe that I have won two titles in this period. I have not yet started thinking about the Olympics but the victories have come at a very crucial time,” Saina told IANS after getting over the line against the reigning All England and Asian Champion.

“The main reason I’ve done well in the last tournaments is that I’ve stayed relaxed and played the pressure points well,” Saina said.

Saina lost the first game in 15 minutes and was two match points down after conceding six straight points in the second from leading 18-14. The 22-year-old said he was relaxed even while was at the brink of defeat and staying patient on her opponent’s match points enabled her to level the match.

“She hardly puts a foot wrong. She had a good strategy in the first game and was very aggressive too. Everything happened so quickly in the second. Despite losing six points in a row, I did not give up,” said Sania, who improved her record against Xuerui to 2-4 with her first win coming in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Singapore Open.

Going into the final, Li had beaten World No. 1 Yihan Wang in the semifinals and also got the better of the current World Champion in All England and Asian Championships.

Asked about defeating the in-form Chinese, Saina said: “It is a big confidence booster but all Chinese are very good. So I have to be wary of all of them in the Olympics.”

Beating World No. 4 Shixian Wang was another of Saina’s top scalps in the tournament.

The command was raised in 1972, soon after the 1971 Indo-Pak war. It has its headquarters in Udhampur, 66 km north of Jammu.

A spokesman of the Northern Command said: “Over the years, we have carved out an enviable niche for ourselves as a highly efficient and effective command. The Northern Command (popularly known as Dhruva Command), has the unique responsibility of guarding the nation’s borders with both Pakistan and China,in addition to effectively countering proxy war,” the spokesman said.

Lauding the accomplishments of the command, the spokesman said, “It has lived up to the faith reposed on it by the nation, be it combating terrorism or the Kargil intrusion in 1999 and in doing this, many officers, junior commissioned officers and other ranks of the Northern Command have made the supreme sacrifice of their lives. Afghan Taliban comes in support of India

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 04:03 PM PDT

In a rare act Afghanistan based Taliban has praised India for its reluctance to support US with Military Resources in Afghanistan. It also promised that Afghanistan won’t be used to hurt Indian interests.

In a commentary on its English website, the Taliban called India “a significant country in the region” and said Indians were well aware of the “aspirations, creeds and love for freedom” of the Afghan people.

“It is totally illogical they should plunge their nation into a calamity just for the American pleasure,” it added, referring to media reports that India won’t get militarily involved in Afghanistan.

The Taliban commentary on “Voice of Jehad” website followed a visit to New Delhi by US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta this month ahead of America’s planned withdrawal from Afghanistan.

It said Panetta wanted India to play a more important role in Afghanistan on the security front but that the Indians gave him a polite ‘no’.

“Although full details of (the) negotiations have not come out, it seems the host’s answer was negative… (Panetta) spent three days in India to transfer the heavy burden to their shoulders, to find an exit and to flee from Afghanistan.

“Some reliable media sources said the Indian authorities did not pay heed to (US) demands and showed their reservations, because the Indians know or they should know that the Americans are grinding their own axe.

“No doubt India is a significant country in the region but is also worth mentioning that they have full information about Afghanistan because they know each other very well in the long history.

“They are aware of the Afghans’ aspirations, creeds and love for freedom. It is totally illogical they should plunge their nation into a calamity just for the American pleasure.”

It said the Taliban wanted “to have cordial relations on the basis of sovereignty, equality, mutual respect and no interference in each other’s internal affairs.

“We have made it clear that no one would be allowed to use the Afghan soil for anyone’s detriment.”

The commentary assumes significance because India along with Iran and Russia played a major role in keeping alive the Northern Alliance when the Taliban ruled Kabul. The Alliance ousted the Taliban after 9/11.

Many in New Delhi have been opposed to the Pakistan-backed Taliban fearing that a return of the militia to Kabul would benefit Islamabad.

The commentary seemed to be an attempt by the Taliban to assure New Delhi that it need not worry despite the militia’s close ties with Pakistan, India’s arch foe.

london olympics 2012International Olympic Committee  has started a probe into  alleged violations in the sale of London Olympics Tickets.

The Sunday Times first voiced the claims which prompted IOC to hold an emergency meeting of its executive board via conference call, referring the allegations to its independent ethics commission.

The Sunday Times earlier provided evidence alleging that officials had been selling thousands of tickets illegally for up to 10 times their face value.

The IOC may now also review the Olympic ticket distribution scheme.

“The International Olympic Committee has moved quickly to deal with allegations that some National Olympic Committees (NOC) and Authorized Ticket Resellers (ATR) have broken rules relating to the sale of Olympic tickets,” the IOC said.

“The IOC takes these allegations very seriously and has immediately taken the first steps to investigate. Should any irregularities be proven, the organisation will deal with those involved in an appropriate manner,” it said in a statement.

Ukrainian National Olympic Committee Secretary General Volodymyr Gerashchenko resigned in May after a BBC reporter filmed him illegally selling London 2012 tickets.

According to the BBC, National Olympic committees have to ensure that their tickets are only sold within their own region.

Here is an IAS Officer who has thrown his Mother out of House. 82 years old Devika Bai Kabirpanthi  mother of IAS officer G P Kabirpanthi has filed a complaint with Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) alleging that her son drove her out of the house, and does not pay her any maintenance.

According to Devika,  her son who is  Collector of Datia district, had been harassing her for years. Not only that, he also threw his own son and daughter-in-law out of the house, she says.

She approached the Commission because police did not entertain her, she alleges. He allegedly used his influence as an IAS officer to stop police from acting on her complaint.

Kumar Sambhav has filed a complaint with Nishatpura police here, saying that his first marriage broke up because the wife was harassed by his sisters for dowry. Sambhav had to pay her an alimony of Rs 12 lakh upon divorce. When he remarried, the second wife too was allegedly harassed for Rs 12 lakh, to make up the `loss’ from the first marriage.

According to Kumar Sambhav, when the dowry demand was not met, the IAS officer turned the couple out of the house. Rohit Mehta, Commission spokesperson, confirmed that a complaint had been received from Kabirpanthi’s mother, and added that explanation would be sought from the competent authorities as to why action was not taken on her complaints. The IAS officer was not available for comment despite several attempts.
