CEC mediates between Air India and striking IPG Pilots

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 06:30 PM PDT

Air IndiaIn order to put a full stop to the Month-long Pilot’s strike, chief labour commissioner (CLC) has convened a meeting between Air India management and IPG Pilots on June 18.

“The CLC has called us again for a meeting with the Air India management. This was our tenth meeting today (Wednesday) with the management.Management have not shown any willingness to start talks or negotiate with us,” Rohit Kapahi, committee member of Indian Pilots’ Guild (IPG), told IANS.

Sources said the airline’s management cannot go ahead and talk to pilots belonging to the IPG as the union has been de-recognised. The pilots, however, claimed that their union was legally recognised and that the airline should start talks at the earliest.

The development comes even as the Delhi High Court Wednesday issued notice to the central government and the Air India management on a plea by the striking pilots seeking payment of their salaries for March.

The pilots moved court seeking their salaries for March, as they were not on strike at that time.

Justice S.P. Garg, hearing the plea filed by Capt. Sumeer Saini and other striking pilots, said: “Issue notice to the respondents (the government and Air India). A reply be filed within a week.”

The court would next hear the case July 10.

The pilots’ move to approach the high court came after the airline mulled the option of sacking another 300 striking pilots. Air India has already sacked 101 pilots. It has also advertised for new pilots.

The strike has severely hit Air India’s international operations, with the airline only operating 38 out of its 45 services.

Representing the aviators of the Air India, the IPG went on strike May 8 against the move to train their counterparts from the erstwhile Indian Airlines on the soon-to-be-inducted Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Meet a Man who escaped Militancy Training to return India

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 12:41 PM PDT

Mukhtar Ahmed is a man who escaped the Forced Training of Lashker-e-Taiba in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and returned back to India. Apparently his journey between countries has not so smooth.

He crossed over to the Indian side from across the LoC and pleaded with the army to allow him and his family to return India with his Family.

“The family includes Ahmed, his wife Safia, 24 and three small children named Mavia Hussain, 6, Mohd Zabeer, 3, and Fatima, an infant of eight months. The family was in a bad condition and pleaded for shelter on the Indian side from the troops of Indian Army,” Col. R.K. Palta, army spokesperson, said.

“The troops immediately extended food and first aid to the family,” he said.

It was around 5 a.m. in the morning when troops deployed on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Mendhar Sector, noticed unusual movement near the house of Mohd Taj, a village watchman of the border village Dheri.

When they reached the village to investigate the unusual movement, it was found that one family had crossed over to India from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Mukhtar Ahmed told the troops that he belonged to village Hadi Marot of Surankot tehsil. He had been kidnapped by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists and forcibly taken to Pakistan where he was forced to undergo training as a militant.

However, he escaped from the training camp and was leading a life of misery and poverty. Not being able to make ends meet and having no other alternative, he decided to return to his parent country.

“After giving humanitarian assistance to the family, the army authorities have now handed over the family to the district administration and civil police,” the spokesman said.

US Nuclear Firm Westinghouse to construct Nuclear Reactor in India

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 11:22 AM PDT

US-based power firm Westinghouse Electric Co. has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. aimed at the future construction of a nuclear power plant in Gujarat state.

The announcement of the early works agreement was made by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Wednesday at the opening session of the annual India-US strategic dialogue she is co-chairing with Indian External Affairs S.M. Krishna.

While differences still remained over India’s nuclear liability law, the MoU represented significant progress toward the realisation of the landmark 2008 India-US civil nuclear agreement, she said.

Westinghouse said it would be negotiating an agreement for preliminary licensing and site development work for plants at the Mithivirdi site in Gujarat calling it an important step toward keeping the project moving forward.

India has reserved two sites for US power companies to set up nuclear power plants under the nuclear deal. But US suppliers have been reluctant to come forward because of concerns over India’s tough nuclear liability law.

Bihar portrayed beautifully in Gangs of Wasseypur

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 10:27 AM PDT

Gangs of WasseypurBihar has been portrayed beautifully in upcoming movie Gangs of Wasseypur.  The whole story revolves around Bihar. The movie has many songs in Bihari languages including Bhojpuri.

First Song  ”Jiya Ho Bihar ke Lale”  manages to capture the essence of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh with its rustic Bhojpuri flavour, coupled well with modern techno beats.

“Bhoos” transports you to rural heartland and is desi to the core. Public from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh would especially be mesmerised by its sound and vocals by Manish Tipu and Bhupesh Singh.

“Tain tain tu tu”  has minimal lyrics and more of music, followed by “Soona ke gharwa”, a Bhojpuri folk track, which truly touches your heart.

The last on the lot is “Humni ke chhodi ke”, which has Muzaffarpur local Deepak Kumar giving it authenticity with his melodious voice.

Overall, the the whole movie album deserves all the kudos for the folksy yet contemporary music.
