The List of Top 20 Engineering Colleges in 2012 as outlined by India Today Survey is given below. While most IITs top the list, IIT Guwahati slipped down to NIT Trichy and NIT Surathkal. NIT Surathkal has for the first time made a spot in Top 10. BIT Mesra has made a epic comeback from its position of 21 for last 2 years, to Rank 16 which is its best after 2005, when it figured in top 10 Engineering colleges of India.

| India to setup E-Network in Central Asia Posted: 10 Jun 2012 11:59 AM PDT India is leveraging its IT Expertise in Central Asia by setting up an E-Network similar to that implemented in Africa. The E-Network would serve the purpose of Tele-education and Tele-Medicine. In Africa, the e-network has been a success with 47 African countries signing onto it. The Central Asian e-network will be a pioneering attempt by India to leverage its prowess in the IT to bridge the digital divide in developing countries and to bolster their capacity in critical areas of health and education by linking India’s top hospitals and educational institutions with hubs in the region. The Krygyz capital will also see India unfurling its Central Asia policy, the first such attempt to articulate New Delhi’s vision for the region where China has made deep inroads. Bishkek will host a Track 1.5 dialogue that will bring experts and academics along with officials from India and Central Asian countries to map out a coherent and effective India-Central Asia partnership. The dialogue has been organized by the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA). Given the critical importance of the resource-rich Central Asian nations, India has been raising its profile by proactive initiatives on multiple fronts in the region which is already sold on the charms of Bollywood cinema. Culturally, India is strongly placed with its soft power attractions – many Tajiks and Uzbeks who trained in India speak fluent Hindi and love humming Hindi songs. With its core strengths in capacity building, IT and human resource development, India is uniquely poised to transform the resource-rich strategically located region that suffers from a massive infrastructure deficit. During his visit, Ahamed will also inaugurate a potato processing plant, part of a slew of small development projects shepherded and assisted by India in the region. The presence of Islamist militant networks and the geographical contiguity of Afghanistan with Central Asian nations have added to the region’s strategic significance for India. Defence cooperation with the region is also growing. India has the only overseas military base in Tajikistan, which is operated by the Indian Air Force in collaboration with the Tajikistan Air Force. India’s proactive diplomacy in the region will also complement its efforts to join the six-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which brings together Russia and China along with Central Asian states, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. India made a strong pitch for joining the SCO at the June 6-7 summit in Beijing by outlining its strong multi-faceted relations with the region and myriad strengths it could bring to bear on the development of Central Asia. |

Addressing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state executive meeting at Mumbai, Modi said: “The country is disappointed and upset with the Congress led UPA government. Coalition compulsions are preventing Congress from acting against corruption.” Being optimistic about his win in Gujarat assembly election in December, Modi said: “We have been winning elections since 2002 and Gujarat has turned electoral politics into developmental politics. People will vote us to power again this year.” “Gujarat in 1974 launched a campaign against corruption and toppled the (then) Congress government. There is no place for corruption in Gujarat,” he said. Targeting the government over rise in price of essential commodities, Modi said: “Look where inflation has reached. Every time our prime minister (Manmohan Singh) assures the nation that the inflation will come down but it rises further.” “If you cannot bring the prices down, at least bring it to that level where our Atal Behari Vajpayee (former prime minister) left it,” he said. Modi also raised the issue of falling value of Indian rupee against dollar. “Look at where rupee has reached. Why is it only India has been so adversely affected? Smaller countries are coping with it, why only India is struggling?” he asked. |
| An Islamic Trust which support Hindu students Posted: 10 Jun 2012 10:21 AM PDT Jamiat Ulama-i Hind Islamic trust today handed over scholarships to nine Hindu school students in Mumbai. Trust president Arshad Madani said that the organisation has consciously kept away from making discriminations based on religion since its inception in 1919. “In those days, we fought against the British rulers and those who advocated a separate state of Pakistan. Now, we are present anywhere in the country to provide emergency help to Muslims and non-Muslims,” Madani observed. The Jamiat Ulama-i Hind distributed scholarships worth over Rs.1.75 million to nine Hindu and 301 Muslim students Sunday, Azmi said. Targetted at students of Class VI to Class XII from different Mumbai schools, Maharashtra’s Minister for Minority Affairs & Textiles Naseem Khan gave away the scholarships to the needy students this afternoon. Again depending on the requirements and performance of the students, the individual scholarship amounts ranged between Rs.1,000 to Rs.10,000 which covers the annual school tuition and term fees. Besides, Azmi said that the NGO has in the past provided legal aid to the innocent Muslim youths, who had been arrested in various terror charges. Azmi, declaring concern for humanity, pointed out how the Muslim NGO had provided relief to people injured in last week’s gas cylinder blast in north-east Mumbai, and a recent building crash in the Muslim-dominated powerloom town of Bhiwandi in Thane district. He added that there are many non-Muslim trusts and NGOs which provide financial assistance to deserving Muslim students and his NGO decided, in its own modest ways to reciprocate the gesture. |

The Plane took of from Silchar for Guwahati. While it was about to land in Guwahati, it was discovered that one of its front wheel was missing. “During a pre-landing check, the ATC discovered that one of the two front wheels were missing. The pilots were immediately informed and an emergency was declared at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport,” a source in the Airports Authority of India (AAI) here told IANS. The ATR flight from Silchar was being commanded by Capt. Urmila Yadav and co-piloted by Capt. Yashu. They kept the aircraft circling for more than two hours over the airport to burn off the fuel while preparations were being made for an emergency landing, the source said. “In such a situation, the remaining fuel is always burnt off to lighten the aircraft and prevent a fatal accident while landing,” the source said. Although panic gripped passengers after they came to know about the snag, the plane landed safely and the passengers and crew were evacuated and were safe, an AAI official said. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi congratulated the pilots over the phone for their courage in landing the and saving precious lives. The aircraft lost its front wheel during take off, a statement issued from the Chief Minister’s Office here said. In New Delhi, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered an enquiry into the incident. A team has from the DGCA eastern headquarters at Kolkata has already left for Guwahati, a source said. |

| IIT Kharagpur passout arrested for sending threat Email to PM Posted: 10 Jun 2012 03:01 AM PDT Anurag Kashyap, an IIT Passout Engineer from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand, was arrested today for sending Threat Email to PM Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P. Chidambaram. The engineer wanted to get his neighbour Manish implicated in a false case, the official added. According to police, the e-mail was sent to the mail id of Delhi police commissioner June 2. Sent in name of Baidaihi Sharma, a resident of Aryana colony of Hazaribagh, the mailer said he was the brother of dead CCL employee Ramesh Sharma. The mail threatened the prime minister and home minister if Ramesh’s retirement benefits were not given to family members, police said. On interrogating the Sharma family, the police discovered that none of the family members were working in CCL. Police arrested the cyber cafe owner Adib Hasan June 7. People with disabilities are no different than regular people when it comes to the zeal and appreciation for life. India has to decide whether it wants the crores of people with disabilities to stay at home, or to be a part of the mainstream and contribute to the economy. Circumstances led Dr Rajendra Johar to be confined to the bed, and he was declared disabled. But he has turned the very notion of disability on its head, and from his bed has helped countless people with disability to gain education, employment and self-respect. Dr Johar is the founder of the NGO Family of Disabled Pratibha Chaturvedi is Shreya’s mother — and her best friend. “She calls me ‘dost’,” giggles the cute little girl, who is affected by cerebral palsy but wants to lighten the burden on her mom’s life. “Sometimes she gets so tired and I press her feet,” says Shreya. Shreya Chaturvedi is 11 and exudes an enviable zest for life. Another person with disability is Sai Prasad, who demonstrates similar enthusiasm, and he has taken flight, literally.
