Political Parties encashing Singur Issue for vested Interests

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 10:30 AM PDT

The rural pocket of Singur that played a decisive role in shaping the big political change in West Bengal last year again seems headed towards becoming the epicentre of the political theatre following the recent court verdict cancelling the Singur land law as “unconstitutional”.

The order by a Calcutta High Court division bench pronouncing as “void” the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, passed by the Mamata Banerjee government, has not only jolted the regime but also triggered a mad race among political parties to reach out to the aggrieved farmers of the area – particularly those who had not accepted the compensation cheques issued by the earlier government.

While the ruling Trinamool Congress has mobilised its students’ wing to take out a rally Saturday in the area, a part of the Hooghly district and about 40 km from here, the Congress has asked its senior leaders to visit the belt and – strangely enough – some naxalite factions have teamed up with a disgruntled Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) peasant leader to woo the farmers.

The target audience for the hectic political activity is the bunch popularly called ‘unwilling’ farmers – those from whom land was alleged to have been forcibly taken by the erstwhile Left Front government for setting up the Nano car factory of automobile giants Tata Motors in 2006.

That the factory had to be shifted to Gujarat’s Sanand following an intense peasants’ movement spearheaded by then major opposition Trinamool Congress under Banerjee’s stewardship with the demand that 400 acres be returned to the unwilling farmers is all too well known.

A similar oft-told story is how the movement reversed Trinamool’s electoral fortunes and dislodged the Left Front (LF) from power last year.

Having enacted the Singur law to return land to the “unwilling farmers” soon after coming to power, the recent court verdict following an appeal by the automobile major against a lower court ruling upholding the act, has seemingly rattled Banerjee and her colleagues.

Banerjee lost no time in announcing that the monthly allowance being paid to the Singur farmers would be doubled to Rs.2,000. But ruling circles fear the disenchantment among the farmers, whose shifting of support to the Trinamool largely led to the LF’s collapse, could grow with each passing day as the court fight stretches on.

In fact, a section of the ‘unwilling’ farmers of Singur now strongly feel they have committed a blunder by not accepting the compensation cheques given by the LF government and instead hopping on to Banerjee’s bandwagon.

In a damage control exercise a day after the court struck down the Singur Act, which had scrapped the land lease given to Tata Motors, the government activated a farmers’ committee that had been the pivot of the anti-farmland acquisition movement in the area.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and several of her cabinet colleagues and intellectuals attended the meeting of the now virtually defunct “Krishi Jami Jibon Jibika Rakha Committee” (Save Agricultural Land, life and Livelihood Committee) which took a decision to start afresh the movement for return of land to unwilling farmers.

“Along with the legal battle the committee will start a movement with the
farmers,” said agriculture minister and Singur lawmaker Rabindranath Bhattacharya.

A day later, the minister favoured an out-of-court settlement with the Tatas to protect the farmers’ interests.

He only articulated one particular line of thought in the government.

A second theory is to redraft the law which the court has annulled saying it had been
enacted without obtaining presidential assent and that sections of compensation were in conflict with the central legislation the Land Acquisition Act, 1894.

But the hawks within the government are pitching for an appeal in the Supreme Court to get the division bench’s verdict overturned.

The main opposition LF, gloating over the government’s discomfiture, has called for amending the law and pilloried the regime for hurrying through it without listening to the voices of reason.

Former minister in the LF government Abdur Rezzak Mollah, who takes pride in calling himself “chashir byata” (son of a farmer) has announced an “Occupy Singur” movement from July 3 on the lines of the Occupy Wall Street agitation in the USA that started last September.

Annoyed with his party CPI-M for not heeding his warnings on Singur when the LF was in power, and also lately for not including him in the state secretariat, Mollah has teamed up with some naxalite groups to carry forward his movement.

Congress not happy Over Maoists Killing in Chattisgarh

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 07:30 AM PDT

The opposition Congress in Chhattisgarh Saturday formed a panel to probe Friday’s killing of 19 Maoist insurgents by security forces saying the presence of women and children among the dead and the “shabby way” the state government handled the issue gave rise to the suspicion they were killed in staged shootouts.

“The presence of children and women among the dead and the shabby way the state government treated the issue gives rise to suspicion of security forces committing excesses on innocent tribal people and killing them in staged shootouts,” Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress President Nand Kumar Patel, who is in Jagdalpur along with other senior leaders attending the party’s two-day training camp, told IANS.

To examine the facts, Patel has constituted an 11-member committee headed by the party’s state vice president and Konta MLA Kawasi Lakhma. The committee will start working from Saturday itself and submit its report within a week.

Meanwhile, top police officials have brushed aside charges of killing innocent tribals and claimed that all the dead were either hardcore militants or members of Jan Militia, a frontal organisation of Maoists.

Additional Director General of Police (Naxal Operations) Ram Niwas and IG (Intelligence) Mukesh Gupta told IANS that among the killed rebels, six were hardcore Maoists including the master mind of the Dantewada jailbreak Markam Suresh, whereas 11 were members of the Jan Militia.

The six personnel of the CRPF’s KOBRA battalion – Wahidul Ishlam, Gyanendra Prakash Singh, Arunabh Ghosh, Krishna Kumar Kshatri, K. Rajan and radio operator S.S. Rana have been brought to Raipur and admitted to MMI Hospital. The condition of Wahidul and Gyanendra is said to be serious as they have received injuries in the chest and stomach.

According to ADG Ram Niwas “Two seriously injured naxal cadres have also been brought to Raipur for treatment. However, one of the two ultras treated at Bijapur District Hospital later succumbed to injuries.”

Kalam was ready to appoint Sonia as Prime Minister in 2004 reveals book

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 05:54 AM PDT

Dr Kalam in BiharFormer President APJ Abdul Kalam would have appointed Sonia Gandhi as the PM had she made a claim to form Government. In a forthright account of his five-year tenure as President in a book titled ” Turning Points”, Kalam recalls that had Gandhi staked a claim herself he would have appointed her as it was the only “constitutionally tenable” option available to him.

The former President says he was almost certain that Gandhi would head the UPA government but Rashtrapati Bhavan had to rework the appointment letter after the Congress chief nominated Singh as the Prime Minister.

“During this time there were many political leaders who came to meet me to request me not to succumb to any pressure and appoint Mrs Gandhi as the Prime Minister, a request that would not have been constitutionally tenable. If she had made any claim for herself I would have had no option but to appoint her,” the book says.

In his book, Kalam writes that after the Lok Sabha poll results were announced, no party or coalition came forward to form the government for three days.

During his tenure, he says he had to take many tough decisions.

“I had applied my mind totally in an unbiased manner after eliciting opinions from legal and constitutional experts. The primary aim of all the decisions was to protect and nurture the sanctity and robustness of our Constitution.”

Describing the 2004 elections as an interesting event, he writes, “It was a cause of concern for me and I asked my secretaries and rushed a letter to the leader of the largest party – in this case the Congress – to come forward and stake the claim for forming the government.

“I was told that Sonia Gandhi was meeting me at 12.15 in the afternoon of 18 May. She came in time but instead of coming alone she came with Dr Manmohan Singh and had a discussion with me. She said that she had the requisite numbers but she did not bring the letter of support signed by party functionaries.

“She would come with the letters of support on the 19th, she said. I asked her why do you postpone. We can even finish it this afternoon. She went away. Later I received a message that she would meet me in the evening, at 8.15pm”

While this communication was in progress, Kalam received a number of emails and letters from individuals, organizations and parties that he should not allow Gandhi to become the prime minister.

And on May 19 at the allotted time, 8.15pm, Gandhi came to Rashtrapati Bhavan along with Singh.

“In this meeting after exchanging pleasantries, she showed me the letters of support from various parties. Thereupon, I said that is welcome. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is ready for the swearing-in ceremony at the time of your choice. That is when she told me that she would like to nominate Dr Manmohan Singh, who was the architect of economic reforms in 1991 and a trusted lieutenant of the Congress party with an impeccable image, as the Prime Minister.

“This was definitely a surprise to me and the Rashtrapati Bhavan secretariat had to rework the letter appointing Dr Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister and inviting him to form the government at the earliest,” Kalam writes in the book published by HarperCollins India and scheduled to be released next week.

After the swearing-in ceremony on May 22 involving Singh and 67 ministers, Kalam “breathed a sigh of relief that this important task had finally been done”.

Two Air India Pilots on Hunger Strike Hospitalized

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 05:22 AM PDT

The Air India strike continued for its 55th day Saturday, taking the national carrier’s revenue losses to an estimated Rs.605 crore, while two more of the agitating pilots on a hunger strike were hospitalised.

“Two more pilots who are on hunger strike have been hospitalised. They (pilots) have been on an indefinite hunger strike since last Sunday,” Rohit Kapahi, committee member of the Indian Pilots’ Guild (IPG), told IANS.

“The doctors are monitoring the health of all the other pilots who are on hunger strike.”

The pilots are demanding reinstatement of their 101 sacked colleagues and recognition of their union, IPG. However, the airline’s management has maintained that pilots must end their strike first and that the sacked pilots will be reinstated on a case-by-case basis.

On Friday, two out of the 11 pilots who are on a hunger strike near the 18th century Jantar Mantar observatory in the city, were hospitalised.

“We sincerely hope that the (civil aviation) Minister now understands that this is not a token hunger strike from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., as he had mockingly stated in television interviews. While the minister is on a vacation, the lives of these young pilots is at risk,” the IPG said.

A senior airline official told IANS that Air India’s executive director, industrial relations Vinita Bhandari has directed the company’s doctors to monitor the health of pilots who are on the hunger strike venue.

“We have directed the doctors to monitor the health of pilots, irrespective of them being sacked or not,” the official said.

Around 440 pilots have struck work since May 8 against the management move to train pilots from the erstwhile Indian Airlines in the merged entity on the soon-to-be-inducted Boeing-787 Dreamliner.

The airline said its estimated revenue loss due to the pilots’ strike is around Rs.605 crore and that traffic to east Asia and Middle East has been badly hit.

Grounded fleet of Boeing 777s, unused manpower and absence from key routes has hit the airlines’ chances of a financial turnaround.

“Current revenue losses are nearly Rs.605 crore on various accounts like ticket cancellation, unused labour and bulk of Boeing 777 fleet being grounded,” the Air India official said.

“But the losses are less than Rs.5 crore a day,” he added.

Currently, the airline is operating only 38 of its original 45 services. Among the seven axed international destinations are Hong Kong, Osaka, Seoul and Toronto.

Trouble started for the airline May 8 when pilot-members of the IPG took mass sick leave, protesting the move to provide Boeing-787 Dreamliner training to pilots from the erstwhile Indian Airlines.

Air India and Indian Airlines were merged in 2007 to form a single entity to overcome their sub-optimal performance and in the hope the step would result in Rs.1,000 crore profit in the first year itself.

Mob assaults Rumi Nath, Assam MLA for converting to Islam and Marrying

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 03:31 AM PDT

Rumi Nath Assam MLAA woman Congress legislator from Assam was thrashed by a mob at a hotel in Karimganj town late Friday night after she converted to Islam and married a Muslim friend, police said Saturday.

Rumi Nath and her husband Jacky Jakir, who were badly injured, were being shifted to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital Saturday for treatment, police said.

Sources close to the legislator said she was pregnant.

Nath, who had won the Borkhola assembly seat in Assam’s Barak Valley on a BJP ticket in 2006, had defected later and joined the Congress. She contested the 2011 assembly elections on a Congress ticket and retained the seat.

She married her friend and long time family acquaintance Jacky Jakir, a Muslim by faith, last month and it angered most of her supporters. She also converted to Islam before the marriage. She, however, did not divorce her first husband, Rakesh Kumar Singh and left the daughter from her first marriage in her parents’ house.

After she revealed her second marriage, some of her supporters and social organisations in the Barak Valley warned her not to enter the area. The MLA had been out of the state with her second husband since then.

“The couple came to Karimganj last evening and were staying for the night at the Hotel Nakshatra. Angry residents somehow came to about the presence of Rumi Nath and her second husband and physically assaulted the duo. Although she had body guards and police reached the spot immediately, it became difficult to control the huge mob,” Karimganj Superintendent of Police Pradip Pujari told IANS.

“While we were able to rescue both of them, they have been seriously injured. Both the MLA and her husband Jacky Jakir are being shifted to Guwahati for better treatment Saturday morning,” Pujari said.

“The situation has been contained as of now but we are keeping a close vigil so that it does not take any religious angle. Investigation is also on to find out the culprits involved in the incident on Friday night,” he said.

India in talks to extradite David Headly from US to India

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 07:30 PM PDT

New Delhi India  has said it will have to discuss with US the extradition of Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Coleman Headley, and termed it the next logical question with regard to the 26/11 suspect, who allegedly carried out a recce of Mumbai ahead of the 2008 attacks.

“I think the further question is whether we will get further access to Headley, whether he would be extradited to India…These are matters to be discussed with US authorities,” Home Minister P. Chidambaram told a press conference called to present the monthly report of his ministry.

Headley now stands convicted in the US pending sentence for his role in the 26/11 attacks that claimed 166 lives, including some Americans.

“As you know, Headley has been convicted by a US court pending sentencing. Only after that exercise is completed, can we say whether Headley will be extradited to India. I am pretty confident that Headley will be given a long sentence in the US,” Chidambaram said.

He also noted that Headley had worked for an US administration’s agency before defecting to Pakistan, to get active as a terrorist.

The home minister pointed out that India had also got access to the 50-year-old Pakistani-American that led to questioning of the 26/11 suspect by Indian sleuths in the US.

Rupee Fall is due to Global Market Instability

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 06:30 PM PDT

Panaji Morgan Stanley Investment Banking India managing director Aisha de Sequeira said that the rupee’s fall was a result of global emerging market instability.

Sequeira was speaking at the annual general body meeting of the Goa Small Industries Association (GSIA) here.

“It is not that the rupee alone is falling. Look at the Brazilian real. Both currencies have depleted considerably. It is a sign of emerging markets being at the receiving end,” Sequeira said.

Sequeira said that the US dollar tended to appreciate when global economies went through both bouyant and unstable phases, because in such business environments, investors immediately veered towards the biggest and the most powerful world economy, which was the United States of America (USA).

“When everyone does well, the dollar does not do very well,” de Sequeira said.

She added that the Indian government’s flip-flops on crucial policy issues like retail “did not create a good impression on the global investor”.

“Clarity on policy is important for creating a good investment environment,” Sequeira said.

The Topic of Satyamev Jayate Episode 9

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 03:58 PM PDT

Satyameva Jayate Aamir KhanThe Episode 9 of Satyamav Jayate would be aired on July 1st, 2012 at 11 AM on Star TV and DD National Channels.

According to a promo of  Episode 9, Aamir asks, “Have you ever seen a Rat transforming into a Lion? I bet you must have seen a Lion transforming into a Rat.

This presents a very vague idea about the topic of  Episode 9 of Satyamev Jayate. It can mean two things

1. Aamir refers to the relationship between Husband and Wife. While outside House a Man is Like Lion but in front of his Wife, he has to be weak and submissive like a Rat. The show may highlight some of the misuse of  Anti-Dowry Act by Wives to blackmail their Husband or Inlaws

2. Alternatively, the show may refer to the Local Goons in various Streets of Cities and Towns. While they remain Lion in their Locality, they are nothing more than a Rat outside. The show might try to manifest famous adage   Apni Gali meinKutta bhi Ser hota hai  and refer to the problems generated by these Goons in the Society viz. Eve Teasing, Extortion, Rash Bike Driving etc.

One cannot deny the possibility of any other alternative meaning of the Question asked by Aamir in the Promo. Lets wait till Sunday 11AM to know what Aamir has kept for us. Meanwhile, watch the promo below and decide what could be the topic of the Episode 9 of Satyamev Jayate.

Rajasthan to give away 200 new Generic Drugs Free of Cost

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 03:30 PM PDT

Carrying forward a popular health initiative, Rajasthan has decided to distribute 200 new generic drugs free of cost at government-run hospitals to benefit millions of patients in the state.

Under the Chief Minister’s Free Medicine Scheme launched Oct 2 last year, 414 most-used drugs and surgical instruments are at present available at 14,964 distribution centres in government health centres, dispensaries and hospitals across the state.

Considering the popularity of the programme, which has so far benefited over 44 million patients, the state government recently sanctioned an additional budget of Rs.11 crore to bring another 200 drugs and surgical instruments under it.

“The free medicine scheme has been very well received by the masses and now we plan to make it more beneficial by adding 200 new generic drugs and surgical instruments,” Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot told IANS.

Two of the most common diseases for which free medicines are provided at the distribution centres are hypertension and diabetes. Also available are antacid and analgesic drugs.

“A budget provision of Rs.200 crore was made in 2011-12 and Rs.300 crore in 2012-13 under the scheme,” the chief minister said.

“Quality medicines are purchased by the Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation at low cost and supplied to the drug stores set up in all the 33 districts of the state. Effective arrangements have also been made for the distribution of these medicines,” Gehlot added.

He said the scheme was a major step towards providing social security to citizens.

The popularity of the health scheme can be gauged by the fact that there has been an average 40-50 percent increase in the number of patients coming to government hospitals since its launch.

“In September 2011, we were getting on an average around 4.4 million patients monthly at state government hospitals, but now this figure has reached 6.2 million,” a health department official said.

However, unavailability of medicines and long queues of patients due to lack of counters and shortage of doctors are still major challenges for the project.

“We are working to resolve these problems and soon more steps would be taken to improve the situation,” the official said.

WHO ready to help Bihar in curing Japanese Encephalitis

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 02:59 PM PDT

World Health Organisation has said it was ready to provide all assistance to encephalitis-hit Bihar.

Talking to reporters here, WHO India representative Nata Menabde said that while WHO was ready to provide all assistance for establishing what the virus was, it had not been approached by the government yet.

“We don’t have any specific project at present, but we are open to providing assistance whenever the government approaches us. We have all the expertise,” Menabde told reporters.

She also said that the WHO was providing some assistance based on requests by the Bihar government.

Menabde stressed on including Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in routine immunization.

“JE vaccine should be included in regular universal vaccination programme,” she said.

An encephalitis infection which has already claimed the life of over 200 children and affected nearly 600 in Bihar as per official data, has symptoms of encephalitis but is not Japanese Encephalitis.

Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) had Thursday said that the disease spreading through Bihar called Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), is not Japanese encephalitis. It is yet to be established what the infection actually is.

Railways makes changes to Tatkal Rules

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 02:24 PM PDT

Concerned over large-scale complaints in the sale of Tatkal (emergency travel) tickets, the railways Friday announced changes in the procedure and timing of their sale.

It was decided that from July 10, the booking of tickets will start at 10 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. at present.

The railways also decided that no authorised agents, including those of the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation, will be allowed to book Tatkal tickets in the first two hours — from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, said a statement from the Railway Board.

The existing restriction on agents booking general tickets on the opening day from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. will also continue, it said.

Officials said while there was a huge passenger demand on the Tatkal system during the first few minutes after the booking counters open at 8 a.m., the role of touts has been bothering the ministry despite many steps to curb the menace.

Ranathambore Sanctuary gets 3 new Tiger Cubs

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 11:20 AM PDT

Three new tiger cubs have been spotted at the Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, bringing cheer to wildlife enthusiasts.

The cubs of tigress T-17, also known as Sundari, were spotted Friday morning in the Rajbagh area of the park.

“The cubs were spotted earlier in the day today and we have set up trap cameras in the area and increased tracking by forest officials, for their safety,” a forest official said.

According to officials, the park is home to around 24 adult tigers and around 26 cubs, including the three spotted Friday.

The total number of big cats is likely to be officially declared soon as the forest department had conducted a tiger census in May this year.

Other wildlife species at the Ranthambore park include leopards, wild pigs, various types of deer, and monkeys.

“It is indeed a matter of celebration among tiger and wildlife enthusiasts,” Rajasthan Minister of Forests & Environment Bina Kak said of the newborn cubs.

Sundari – the name given to T17 by the minister herself – has been normally seen in the terrain around the Padam Talab, Rajbagh Talab, Malik Talab and Kachita Valley areas of the park.

The park is spread over an area of around 400 sq km. If the adjoining Sawai Man Singh sanctuary is also considered, the total area of Ranthambore National Park comes to around 500 sq km.

The park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1957, and was brought under the central government’s Project Tiger in 1974. It was designated a national park in 1981.

With the number of big cats growing in the park, officials hinted that at least two tigresses could be shifted within the state to the Sariska tiger reserve which already has two tigers and three tigresses.

IIT Alumni reject new IIT Entrance Examination Pattern

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 06:30 PM PDT

IIT Delhi Alumni Association have  rejected the human resource development (HRD) ministry’s new formula for tests for entrance into the premier institutes and demanded a status quo in 2013.

The ministry’s fresh proposal enables only top 20 percent scorers of any board in Class 12 exam to enter the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

The association’s decision was taken here after a two-hour meeting with representatives of IIT faculty, following a compromise between the HRD ministry and IIT Council Wednesday over the entrance exam pattern for admission to engineering institutes.

As per the new formula, there will be a “main” test for the top 20 percent scorers of all boards, and then a final “advanced” exam, under the IITs supervision, for the top 150,000 applicants. The new format will come into effect from 2013, if accepted by the ministry.

“The 20 percent criteria and 2013 to be the beginning year of the new proposal stands rejected because such patch-work solutions have been taken in haste to meet deadlines,” said a statement by the association.

The HRD ministry and IIT Council Wednesday agreed to have a new two-stage entrance test formula proposed by the IITs following opposition from some of the premier institutes to the single entrance examination mooted by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal. The meeting was attended by directors of all IITs.

As per the new formula, All India Engineering Entrance Examination and and IIT-Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) will be combined in a common entrance test.

The association said that the new formula was contrary to the objectives set out by the ministry and “prejudicial to the interests of the present students of Class 12 and from rural India where school education is in a shambles.”

The association said that it will wait for the decision of the senates.

“We will follow up with the senates on the question of 20 percentile and 2013 to be the beginning year,” said the statement.

“We want status quo till 2013 and in the meantime we expect deliberations to meet the diverse objectives of the HRD ministry, the IITs and other stake holders,” it added.

Punjab Village warmly welcomes Surjeet Singh

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 05:46 PM PDT

Hundreds gathered in Phidde village of Punjab’s Ferozepur district to give a rousing welcome to Surjeet Singh, who returned home after more than 30 years of incarceration in Pakistan. Relatives distributed sweets and burst crackers to mark his return.

Surjeet, 69, was given a tumultuous and teary-eyed welcome as a near stampede-like situation was witnessed when hundreds of residents of the village and nearby areas gathered in the village, 35 km from Ferozepur town (260 km from Chandigarh).

Family members, relatives and friends assembled at the house of Kulwinder Singh, Surjeet’s son, to celebrate his home-coming and gave him a hero’s welcome. They distributed sweets and burst fire crackers.

Surjeet’s wife, Harbans Kaur, who could not meet him at Attari border checkpost where he crossed over from Pakistan into India, owing to the chaos on his arrival, met him in the village.

“I am very happy to be back with the family and meet my children,” Surjeet said after returning home after over three decades in Pakistani jails.

Held in Pakistan on spying charges in the early 1980s, Surjeet was released from Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail early Thursday and made the road journey to Wagah, on the Pakistan side of the border, before entering India.

Surjeet looked weary after the hectic day of his release from Lahore. Following the grand welcome at Attari border checkpost, he offered prayers at Harmandar Sahib, the holiest of Sikh shrines popularly known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar before arriving in his village.

As the car carrying Surjeet neared the village, he was virtually lifted by villagers and taken on an open vehicle through the village to his house.

After reaching the Indian soil, Surjeet, a former trooper, had promptly admitted that he had indeed been sent to spy for India. He was arrested inside Pakistan 1982 on charges of spying and sentenced to death. His death penalty was later commuted.

He said he would rest in the village and meet people in the next 2-3 days before approaching the government for his next course of action.

Alan Issac takes over ICC Leadership from Sharad Pawar

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 01:30 PM PDT

India’s Sharad Pawar stepped down as the president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and was replaced by New Zealander Alan Issac.

Isaac, the former chairman of New Zealand Cricket, became the eighth president of the ICC.

Former South African Test player David Richardson, who was the general manager (cricket), was also confirmed as the next chief executive and successor to Haroon Lorgat, who stood down after four years.

Isaac will serve for a two-year term and he expressed his honour at his election.

“When I look at the list of previous Presidents, I am reminded of the importance of this office. In the midst of my pride at being chosen as President, I recognise that there is, of course, much hard work and much progress needed if we are to maintain the game’s current healthy state,” said Issac,

“I believe that the challenges ahead are no less daunting than those we have faced in the last two years if we are to maintain the vibrancy and viability of the three formats of the sport,” he added.

“We are fortunate as a sport – indeed unique – to have three different formats at international level. We will all strive not only to preserve those formats but to build on their foundations. In that way the ICC will continue to oversee a great sport and we will all work to make it even greater.”

Issac said, “I look forward to serving the game with honesty and integrity and to the best of my ability. I look forward to handing on the guardianship of the sport with the game enjoying even greater health.”

Richardson, who played 42 Tests for South Africa, has been ICC’s general manager – cricket for the last 10 years.

“It is a real honour to be confirmed as the ICC Chief Executive and I want to pay tribute to Haroon Lorgat. I have learnt much in the last four years and I inherit a game in great health with much to be optimistic about. I look forward to building on that and tackling the challenges ahead,” he said.

The ICC Annual Conference agreed to create the post of ICC chairman, remove the role of ICC vice-president and vary the role and powers of the ICC president, all with effect from the close of the 2014 Annual Conference. The formalisation of these amendments give effect to the principles agreed by the ICC Board earlier this year.

Until the end of the 2014 Annual Conference, the role of the ICC president will remain in its current form, but from the end of the 2014 Annual Conference it will become ceremonial in nature with a term of only one year.

A new role of chairman of the ICC will be created from the end of the 2014 Annual Conference. The term of office will be two years and the chairman will be appointed by the Board at its first meeting following the 2014 Annual Conference.

Russia and Hungary were confirmed as new Affiliate Members of the ICC but Switzerland was removed as an Affiliate Member having been suspended at the 2011 Annual Conference for failing to comply with the ICC’s membership criteria and remaining unable to do so by the 2012 Annual Conference. There are now 106 members of the ICC.

Tata Motors Jamshedpur Plant stops Production

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 12:30 PM PDT

Tata Motors Thursday halted production at its Jamshedpur plant for three days to adjust production targets with shrinking demand.

“Production at the Jamshedpur plant is being suspended for three days under a block closure for aligning production with demand,” a Tata Motors spokesperson told IANS in New Delhi.

The Jamshedpur plant of the automobile giant is known for producing commercial vehicles.

According to the official, the halt in production comes in the wake of a slowdown in the domestic economy.

As per the recent data released by the Central Statistics Office last week, India’s industrial output grew marginally by 0.1 percent in April due to poor show of capital intensive mining and manufacturing sectors.

The factory output, measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), declined by 3.5 percent in March, the first such contraction in factory output since October 2011, when it shrank by 4.7 percent.

This has in turn effected the sales of key economic activity indicator segment — medium and heavy commercial vehicles which include trucks and buses — fell by 10.58 percent at 22,227 units in May 2012 from 24,858 units sold in the corresponding month of last year.

Earlier, the company had halted production at its Pune-based plant for three days starting June 22, 2012.

Other automobile companies too have been observing NPDs (no production day), as high fuel and interest cost have dampened the consumer sentiment in the auto sector, with nearly all categories except that of two-wheelers taking a hit due to these factors.

Indian Companies buy all 7 Teams of Sri Lanka Premier League

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 11:19 AM PDT

India Inc. has owned all the seven franchises in the Sri Lankan Premier League (SPL), ignoring the decision of the Indian cricket board not to allow its players to take part in the island’s Twenty20 tournament.

The Indian business houses have outbid all others to sweep all the franchises on offer for the league to be played August 10-31. The matches will be played in Colombo and Pallekele.

Wadhawan Holdings bought Wayamba for the highest bid of $5.02 million while Number One Sports Consulting got Kandurata for $4.98 million.

The Uva and Ruhuna went to Success Sports and Pearl Overseas for $4.6 million. Indian Cricket Dundee bought Basnahira for $4.33 million while Uthura went to Rudra Sports for $3.4 million. Varun Beverages bought Nagenahira for $3.22 million.

Each franchisee will be allowed a maximum of 18 players, including six foreign cricketers. But a team is allowed to play only two foreigners in the playing eleven. The players’ draft will be held July 5-6.

Fight over Custody of Abu Jundal between NIA, Delhi and Mumbai Police

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 10:30 AM PDT

Abu Jundal PhotoMumbai police has again petitioned a court in New Delhi  for 26/11 suspect Abu Jundal ‘s custody to bring him face-to-face with Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab caught alive during the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) also sought his custody.

Mumbai police told Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav that Hamza was required to be confronted with convict Kasab, who has appealed in the Supreme Court against his conviction and death sentence for the terror strike.

They also separately moved a petition for Hamza’s custody in connection with the investigation in the Mumbai serial blasts of 2006.

The court would next hear both the applications July 5.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) also sought Hamza’s custody in connection with a fresh first information report (FIR) lodged June 8 in a terrorism case.

The NIA alleged that Hamza, along with another accused, was collecting explosives in the country for carrying out terror attacks.

The agency told the court that he was required to be presented in a designated NIA court July 6.

The court would next hear the NIA’s plea July 4.

The court Wednesday dismissed Mumbai police’s earlier application for the custody of Hamza.

Hamza, an Indian mastermind of the attack and an alleged member of the outlawed Indian Mujahideen group, was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here June 21 after his deportation from Saudi Arabia.

Bihar moves to Computerize all its Jails

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 09:48 AM PDT

Bihar has roped in the National Informatics Centre(NIC) to develop a software to computerise all prisons.

“NIC is developing a software for the computerization of prisons and to upload all data. It will be in our hands within six months,” Inspector General of Police (Prisons) Anand Kishore said here.

The software will be launched at the Beur Jail here as a pilot project followed by 54 other jails in the state, Kishore told IANS.

According to him, all important information about prisoners including their crime history, date of entry into prison, date of production in the court and the wages earned in jail would be fed into the computers.

A record of visitors to jails would be maintained. All the visitors would have to get their photographs clicked and fingerprints scanned.

“It would help in detecting crime in a big way as many people with criminal history reportedly visit jails to meet inmates,” he said.

Killer Disease in Bihar is not Japanese Encephalitis

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 09:45 AM PDT

It is official now. The acute encephalitis syndrome(AES) that has killed 233 children in Bihar since May is not Japanese encephalitis, it was announced Thursday.

The ruling has come from the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV).

“In fact the disease remains a mysterious one,” Additional Secretary (Health) R.P. Ojha said.

“NIV has told the Bihar government that no one had a positive strain for Japanese encephalitis,” he said.

According to him, the NIV collected cerebral spinal fluid and blood samples of 73 patients from Muzaffarpur district.

Earlier this month, Health Minister Ashwani Kumar Choubey announced that the mysterious disease was AES.

Ojha said of the 599 children with AES symptoms admitted to hospitals in Muzaffarpur, Patna and Gaya, 233 have died.

India’s First 16 Lane Expressway to be constructed in Gurgaon

Real estate giant DLF and Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) Thursday announced commencement of work on the 8.3 km, 16-lane signal free road being built at a cost of Rs.540 crore in the city.

The project, under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) was a culmination of years of planning, said an official.

“AECOM consultants developed the concept to upgrade this spinal road to international standards. The contract for project execution has been awarded to IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company Ltd., while renowned international consultant Parson Brinckeroff is the project management consultant”, said an official from DLF.

The road extends from Gateway Tower on NH-8 to the end of Sector 55-56 and is designed to accommodate higher traffic volume. The corridor would be fully integrated with the Rapid Metro system.

“The 16-lane corridor would be signal free, providing free movement for commuters on either side and will feature six underpasses that would reduce noise pollution. There is also a dedicated corridor for sector 25 to sectors 55 and 56, which will mitigate traffic and thereby enable smooth flow of main traffic. The estimated project cost will be Rs.540 crore and completed in three years,” the official added.

HUDA had provided land for the project and DLF is providing funds.

Surjeet Singh admits Espionage Charges

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 09:06 AM PDT

After more than 30 years of incarceration in Pakistan, Surjeet Singh returned home Thursday to a tumultuous and teary welcome from family and friends and promptly admitted that he had indeed been sent to spy for India.

Held in Pakistan on spying charges in the early 1980s, Surjeet, 69, was released from Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail early Thursday and made the road journey to Wagah, on the Pakistan side of the border, before entering his homeland.

“I was a RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) agent. No one bothered about me after I got arrested. Don’t ask me too much…,” Surjeet told reporters soon after stepping on Indian soil.

He was garlanded and hugged by family members and fellow villagers from Phidde in Ferozepur district. Dozens of camera crews and media persons jostled with each other to capture the moment.

The crowds were so frenetic that Surjeet, who completed his life term in 2005, couldn’t even meet his wife Harbans Kaur. They were taken to Amritsar, where the family offered prayers at Harmandar Sahib, the holiest of Sikh shrines, in separate vehicles.

Smiling and waving to family members, friends and supporters, a tired but beaming Surjeet thanked Pakistani border officials as he walked across the zero line at the international border.

“I am very happy to return after 30 years and meet my children and family,” he said.

“Indian prisoners are treated well in Pakistan jails. Sarabjit Singh is also doing well there. I met him recently though I couldn’t meet him today before leaving. He has sent no message with me. Leave it to me, I will get him released… Please don’t ask anything more,” Surjeet said, referring to Sarabjit Singh, also from Punjab who has been in Kot Lakhpat jail.

Downplaying the confusion over the release, he said: “In Urdu, the way they write Sarabjit and Surjeet is almost the same. This led to the confusion. Otherwise, everyone knew that the matter was regarding my release only.

“I will never return to Pakistan again,” Surjeet, with a grey flowing beard, told reporters in Punjabi, his head and finger indicating a firm “no” gesture.

“I was arrested earlier for spying charges. If I return again, the security agencies might suspect that I have come for spying again.”

Surjeet said prisoners on both sides of the border should be released by the respective governments.

“I was treated well by prison officials and I am thankful to them,” he said.

Dressed in a white kurta-pyjama and black turban and carrying two bags, Surjeet had been brought to the Wagah border on the Pakistan side in a prison van.

Though he had been freed, his left hand was in handcuffs. The accompanying policemen got down with him but did not open the handcuffs immediately even as he smiled and hugged his lawyer.

Once the formalities were completed, he crossed to the Attari side of the joint border checkpost, about 30 km from Amritsar, where his family and friends waited excitedly to meet him.

His son Kulwinder, holding a box of sweets, couldn’t hold back his tears. The family had given up hope of seeing him again, presuming him to be dead after he went missing near the border in Ferozepur sector in 1982.

“I was only two-three years old when he went missing. This is the biggest day of my life,” said Kulwinder.

Surjeet’s release came in the midst of the controversy and flip-flop over the release of Sarabjit Singh.

The Pakistan side was Tuesday widely reported to have announced that Sarabjit, who is facing death penalty on terrorism charges, would be released after his death sentence was commuted by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari.

In an apparent flip, this was retracted later at night with the government clarifying that it was not Sarabjit but Surjeet who was being freed.
