Indian NGO comes up with Snake Guide Map

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 06:51 AM PDT

snake An Indian NGO has  come up with the novel  ’All India Snake Guide Map’ to help determine which reptile is poisonous and what is the line of treatment that should be followed. Around 46,900 people die due to snake bite every year.

Designed like a geographical map that can be hung on the wall, the two feet by three feet publication classifies snakes in terms of whether they are venomous or non-venomous and on the basis of where they are found – land, river or trees.

“In almost every case of snake bite, the first reaction among the victim and his relatives is that of shock and bewilderment. They cannot decide whether the snake is venomous or not. And this only leads to delayed treatment, which may even lead to death,” said Bijan Bhattacharya, secretary, Canning Juktibadi Sanskritik Sangstha (CJSS), which has published the map.

CJSS is based in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district that houses a part of the world’s largest mangrove forests, the Sundarbans.

“There are 33 varieties of snakes in India. Of them, nine are poisonous – seven of them living on land, and one each in water and trees,” Bhattacharya told IANS.

Snakes living in water are grouped into those found in the sea or those found in fresh water. In case of fresh water snakes, the further sub-groups are those found in rivers and ponds.

“Against sketches of each snake, there is a short description listing its identifying marks so that it can be easily recognised by the people, particularly the villagers. Each stage of treatment if bitten by that particular variety is also provided.

“The map tries to shatter prevailing myths about snakes. For instance, many still rely on quacks and treat the wounds with herbs. The map tries to raise awareness about the futility of such measures which can prove even fatal,” he said.

The map also provides details of the varieties of snakes found in a particular state.

“Most of the snake bite deaths are reported from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and Assam,” he said.

This is the third map brought out by CJSS. Earlier, the NGO had published a snake guide map of South 24 Parganas district, and followed it up with a similar effort encompassing the whole of West Bengal.

India to grow by 7.6 percent this year

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 06:20 AM PDT

While the world is under the dagger of another financial breakdown, India has predicted that its GDP would grow by 7.6 percent in the next fiscal starting from April.

The Economic Survey for 2011-12 tabled by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in parliament Thursday projected a 7.6 percent growth for the next fiscal beginning April 1.

Inflation, on the other hand, is projected at 6.5-7 percent by the end of March. “It may further moderate during 2012-13 due to tightening of monetary policy and other measures put in place by the government,” the survey said.

The growth in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) during the current fiscal has been pegged at 6.9 percent. The country’s GDP growth had decelerated to 6.1 percent in third quarter from 6.9 percent in the second quarter of the curent fiscal.

“But despite the low growth figure of 6.9 percent, India remains one of the fastest growing economies of the world as all major countries including the fast growing emerging economies are seeing a significant slowdown.”

According to the survey, industrial production is likely to improve in the next financial year.

Osama Bin LadenThe third and youngest wife of Osama bin Laden has accused his first spouse of betraying the Al Qaeda chief and revealing his location.

The two wives — currently in custody in Pakistan — were involved in a “vicious catfight” when the elder accused the younger wife of “sticking to Osama like a prostitute”, The Sun, the popular tabloid, reported here.

The two are in custody since bin Laden was killed in May last year by US special forces at his mansion in Abbottabad city near Islamabad. Another wife and eight children are also in custody.

Wednesday night, security personnel were given “strict instructions” not to leave the 61-year-old Khairiah alone with the 29-year-old Amal, in case one of them kills the other.

A commander from Pakistani spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) told the daily how Amal suspected that Khairiah had betrayed bin Laden by leaking his location in Pakistan to the US.

“Amal described Khairiah as ‘the real killer of Bin Laden’. Khairiah accused Amal of sticking to Osama like a prostitute who wanted sex 24 hours a day,” the official said.

Amal was injured while attempting to shield bin Laden from the US Navy Seals during the military operation.

In transcripts of interviews, Amal said: “Osama loved me the most. We used to talk about romance, other things apart from Al Qaeda things. In the last days, he felt he was being tracked down by the US forces and their allies. He said his death was to be orchestrated by his wife (Khairiah) or family. He was ready to face it.”
