The Truth about India Pakistan World Cup Semi-Finals

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 04:03 PM PDT

India Pakistan Semi-FinalsA report was published in the Sunday Times about the possible fixing of the Semi-Final match between India and Pakistan has caused huge  uproar  in local and International media and  has triggered the  old game of allgations and denial.
Britain’s Sunday Times owned by The Times group (which owns Times of India as well) carried out a sting operation where a Bookie named Vicky Seth aka Manu has claimed  to have pre-decided the results of India- Pakistan Semi-final.  Vicky has been identified as a Delhi bookie, who claims to have  fixed many other  international matches  apart from Indian Premiere League, IPL and  English County.

It is not mere a coincidence that many fans had raised the doubt over the genuinity of that match last year itself, as was quite evident on CricInfo’s Facebook Page.

This was  also reported here by Biharprabha News a year ago that Semi Final match was indeed fixed.

The incident has confirmed  the deep links between Bollywood, Cricket and Bookies. Name of few well known Celebrities have popped up who acted as agent between Cricketers and Bookies.  A Bollywood actress   used to lure Pakistani players to under-perform in many matches of WC including Semi-Final. The Newspaper also published a  blurred picture of  an actress  which quickly resembled  Nupur Mehta, the key lady in  Sunny Deol-starrer Jo Bole So Nihal. Nupur has confirmed that the picture was hers, but denied any allegations of match fixing. She also threatened to sue the paper for publishing her pic without permission

The Paper further claims to have evidence of players were offered thousands of  pounds for  deciding the fate of matches. It reads as follows

Batsmen were being offered ‘typically 44,000 pounds ($69,000) for slow scoring, 50,000 pounds for bowlers who concede runs and as much as 750,000 pounds to players or officials who can guarantee the outcome of a match. The paper said bookies had used an unidentified Bollywood actress to help with the fixing and stated: ‘So rife is match-fixing in parts of India that cricket may be in danger of losing its reputation as a civilised sport played by gentlemanly rules. Instead it is in danger of becoming a byword for racketeering.’

Interestingly Delhi Police has some records of Vicky Seth, though he was never arrested (why?). Seth is known to be a well-known bookie attached to a very big betting syndicate. He started operating out of Delhi and was on the police’s radar for his alleged involvement in match-fixing  since a long time.

According to a report in TOI, Seth’s syndicate is operated very professionally. They are always one step ahead of the administration and they are equipped with latest gadgets and software too.

A Police officer was quoted saying , “You will be surprised to know that these bookies mainly operate from countries where there is very little cricket or no cricket at all. They are high-fliers and live life king size. Seth is known for his life style – he frequents the most happening dos in the city, including after-match IPL parties, because tournaments like IPL and BPL are always fertile ground for these bookies.

While the Police has not been able to solve the mystery of Cronje case dating 2000, a much graver case of match fixing has come up to its heads for Investigation. International Cricket Council (ICC) has started its probe into the allegations and would come up with its reports in couple of months. An ICC spokesperson was quoted saying “Thank You” to the Sunday Times for bringing this incident into picture.

India’s Industrial Output reaches 12 months High

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 09:15 AM PDT

In the previous month, the index of industrial production (IIP) — a barometer of factory production — grew at a snail’s pace at 1.8 percent, underlining the slowdown in the economy and putting pressure on policymakers to take steps to stem the fall.

For the April-January period, the IIP has grown at a slow 4 percent.

The IIP has been on a see-saw trend. It contracted by 5.1 percent in October, before expanding by 5.9 percent in the next month. But data for December showed the barometer plunging to a slow 1.8 percent.

The industry has been clamouring for interest rate easing. In response, the Reserve Bank of India cut the cash reserve ratio by 75 basis points last week and 50 basis points in January, bringing much needed liquidity in the market.

But a rate cut may not happen till April when the apex bank spells out the monetary policy for 2012-13.

According to data released Monday by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, consumer goods saw a huge 20.2 percent rise in January.

However, capital goods production continued to slip. It was logged at minus 1.5 percent in the month under review, having fallen by a whopping 16.5 percent in the previous month.

Manufacturing, which is a major constituent of the IIP, expanded by 8.5 percent in January, but the mining sector’s output contracted by 2.7 percent. Electricity generation was moderate at 3.2 percent.

Team Anna to fast for justice to slain IPS Officer Narendra Kumar

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 06:40 AM PDT

Team Anna and members of India Against Corruption will stage a 3 day log fast in Bhopal starting from Tuesday, to protest the killing of young IPS Officer Narendra Kumar. They demand immediate Investigation and punishment for the concerned people in Mining Mafia. It is not sure whether Anna himself would take part fast, but key members like Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi are definitive to join

“Indians won’t be mute spectators to this political tamasha (drama) this time round. Team Anna and thousands will stage three-day fast and protest in Bhopal to pay tribute to Narendra Kumar and demand a stronger law for the whistle-blowers,” the statement here said.

On March 8, the 2009 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Narendra Kumar Singh, was mowed down by a tractor-trolley, being driven by an alleged member of the mining mafia, when he tried to stop the vehicle carrying illegally-quarried stones in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh.

“The gory killing brings to fore the need for a strong whistle-blowers system under control of Jan Lokpal and Jan Lokayukta,” said the statement.

According to Team Anna, the government has so far not agreed to a Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) probe and has settled for a judicial probe.

“The family of the officer has demanded a CBI probe, but the government has so far denied one and has settled for a judicial probe. His family has also questioned the statements made by the gunner and driver of Narender indicating that there is more than what meets the eye,” the statement said.

“We demand that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan should immediately pass the Jan Lokayukta bill in the state like the one passed in Uttrakhand,” the statement said.

In a statement Team Anna has said that at least 15 Indians, who tried to blow the lid off the corruption scams or fought the menace in other ways, have been killed since 2010.

“While the Jan Lokpal ensures security to the whistle blowers, the proposed bill on the issue floated by the government is inadequate and gives the powers to Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) which in a way is a statutory body and cannot act of its own,” the statement said.

“Strong whistle-blower protection law is needed, not the one presented by the UPA. Government’s law seeks to protect the corrupt and victimize whistle blowers,” the statement added.

Indian restaursants in Rome have been targetted after the jailing og Italian Cops in India. La Destra, a right-wing organisation protested by forcing Indian restaurants in Rome to shut down. They screamed ‘Italy is with you’, ‘We miss you’, ‘Italy is waiting for you’.

La Destra is supported by former Italian health minister Francesco Storace. Storace has written in his blog that: “Unfortunately, what we feared has happened. Our two navymen were taken to jail. The speed of decision matches settling of a condominium dispute”.

Meanwhile, Gianluigi Limido, head of La Destra in Rome, claimed to have closed down 10 Indian restaurants in Rome. He also put up posters asking people to boycott Indian products.

But La Destra has no intention to boycott Indian products. “We just want our soldiers to be freed. The whole country is with them,” he said. The organisation boasts of 20,000 followers in Rome and more than a lakh across Italy

Vidya’s superhit Kahaani goes Houseful

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 05:39 AM PDT

After being appreciated for her performance in female-centric “Ishqiya”, “No One Killed Jessica” and “The Dirty Picture”, actress Vidya Balan carries forwards the legacy of hits with “Kahaani”, which has reportedly collected Rs.2.95 crore on its opening day.

Released Friday, the drama-thriller made at a shoestring budget of Rs.8 crore is receiving positive response from both the critics and audiences

“The film has opened very well. The collection in India on Friday was Rs. 2.95 crore and on Saturday it earned Rs. 4.5 crore. A full-pack show is expected on Sunday. The film will definitely survive for over a week,” Taran Adarsh told IANS.

In director Sujoy Ghosh’s Vidya is cast as a software programmer. She comes to Kolkata from London in search of her husband, who is the father of her unborn child.

Gautam Dutta, COO, PVR said that the film has superseded their expectation.

“The response we are getting for the film is phenomenal. There are families coming together to watch the movie. And since it is a women-centric film, there are group of females coming to watch the film. We are expecting a 80 percent occupancy all over India on weekend, which is something we did not expect. And the film should be able to do a good business,” Dutta told IANS.

It is being co-distributed by Pen India Pvt. Ltd, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Boundscript Motion Pictures Pvt. Ltd

” ‘Kahaani’ is a film that is made for serious and sensible cinegoers. Vidya’s performance is being appreciated by audience. The film is not entertaining like ‘The Dirty Picture’, that is why it has a niche audience. But it will not only recover its cost but also earn profits,” said Delhi based distributor Joginder Mahajan.

KahaaniIf the story and Viday’s charma are attracting audiences, distributor Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Arts Ltd says word of mouth is also helping the film a lot in gaining success.

“It is houseful in multiplexes and we are expecting collection of Rs.5 crore on Sunday. It is the word of mouth that is bringing people to the theaters,” Ghai said.

As no big releases are scheduled for next week, sop Ghai feels absence of biggies at the box office will also help “Kahaani” in strengthening its position at the ticket window.

“Since there is no big release next week, it is expected the movie will earn a good amount of profit,” he added.

India lifts ban on Cotton Exports

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 04:58 AM PDT

Indian Government has temporarily lifted the ban imposed on March 5 on the ban of Export of Cotton under severe pressure from Traders and allies.
The government, however, said it will not issue any new export registration certificates and only bales registered for shipment before the ban was effected March 5 would be cleared for exports.

“The central government hereby withdraws the notification… dated March 5,” the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification withdrawing the ban that was clamped citing shortage of supply and increased domestic demand.

The roll-back followed widespread protests from political allies and the opposition, farmers and traders within the country and buyers, especially China, the biggest importer of Indian cotton.

Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had asked for lifting the ban, saying the curb would would hurt planting prospects while an industry group in China said the move damaged international trade.

Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar told reporters here that fresh registrations for cotton exports would not be allowed until further notice.

“Keeping in view the interests of farmers, traders and industrialists, a balanced view had been taken to roll back the ban on cotton exports,” Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma had said Sunday.

The decision to lift the ban was taken last week by a group of ministers (GoM) chaired by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

The GoM is scheduled to meet again in the next two weeks to assess the cotton budget afresh and take an appropriate policy view on the matter, the commerce ministry said in a statement.

The government had banned exports of the fibre fearing a fall in availability in view of rising consumption at home.

According to the ministry, higher exports than anticipated in cotton season 2010-11 reduced the expected carryover of stock for the current cotton season 2011-12, from 48.30 lakh bales estimated by the Cotton Advisory Board to about 33 lakh bales.

At the same time production this season was virtually the same as last year’s, and total supply marginally lower.

Holi Celebrated with great joy by Biharis in Trinidad and Tobago

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 03:05 AM PDT

The Celebration of Holi outside India is no less when you see the joys of Biharis living abroad. This was witnessed in Trinidad  when Bihar-Origin Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Hindus in the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago joined the rest of the Indian diaspora to celebrate Holi.

At over 100 specially arranged competitions centres, cash prizes and trophies were given away.

The young and the old – accompanied by tass drums and cymbals – danced and paraded through the streets, making this year’s celebration another grand one.

On Saturday, the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Cultural Co-operation led by Indian High Commissioner Malay Mishra marked Holi.

Holi is not a public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago so it is celebrated on the Sunday closest to the official date.

Said the prime minister: “It helps us to place importance on where we come from. Phagwa (Holi) is a season of hope and a time to renew our commitment to securing our future because the children here are our hope and our future.”

Finance Minister Winston Dookeran said it was a tribute that the Indians who came here between 1845 and 1917 from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar had maintained their links with the motherland.

Some 148,000 Indians had come here to work on the sugar and cocoa plantations.

“It is a message of truth, honesty, graciousness and about life itself. It points to an aura of infinite spirituality,” said Dookeran.

Around 25 percent of the 1.3 million people in Trinidad and Tobago are Hindus.

Kingfisher forced to cancel over 30 regular Flights

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 02:35 AM PDT

kingfisher airlinesKingfisher is getting blows after blows in the Airline Industry. A fresh trouble started today when  at least 30 flights either being cancelled or clubbed as several pilots and other staffers failed to report for work to protest delays in salary payments.

At least 13 flights from Mumbai were cancelled, while reports said there was no operation from Kolkata today. Nine departures from Delhi were also either cancelled or clubbed, airport sources said, adding only three direct flights each way were available on the busiest Mumbai-Delhi sector which has seven daily services. Acknowledging disruption in its schedule, an airline spokesperson told that some flights “are being cancelled as a result of employee agitation on account of delayed salaries”.

“The flight loads have reduced because of our limited distribution ability caused by IATA suspension,” he said, adding that this situation had arisen because of “our bank accounts having been frozen by the tax authorities”. The spokesperson said the airline would operate “approximately 80 per cent of our planned flight schedule” while maintaining, “We are making all possible efforts to remedy this temporary situation”
