Dispute surfaces in Team Anna over Coalgate Protests by Kejriwal

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 12:40 PM PDT

Former woman top cop and a key member of the disbanded Team Anna group, Kiran Bedi, did not participate in Sunday’s anti-corruption protest rally by India Against Corruption (IAC) as she was not in favour of protesting against the BJP.

Asked the reason for Bedi’s absence, IAC head Arvind Kejriwal told reporters: “On this issue she (Bedi) probably feels that the BJP can give the country a good government. But the BJP can’t.”

The IAC members, including Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan, had organized a ‘gherao’ or surrounding the houses of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Nitin Gadkari to protest corruption.

Kejriwal had maintained on Saturday that Bedi was “completely” with them though they had different view points on including the BJP in their target against corruption.

Bedi had tweeted on Saturday that while she “fully supports” Kejriwal’s protest call, she felt that they should focus on the party in power.

A K HangalMumbai Filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar, who worked with A.K. Hangal in the 2001 film “Lagaan”, says that he will always be remembered for his “unmatched performance” and that is an example for those who want to perform “naturally”.

Hangal passed away here Sunday following a prolonged illness. He was 97.

“It is indeed very sad news. Not only for the world of films but also for the stage. I will always remember Hangal saab’s characters’ as ‘pious, kind-hearted and humble’! His gift for giving a natural performance is unmatched,” Gowarikar said in a statement.

“His performances in ‘Deewar’, ‘Sholay’ and countless films of the 1970′s will make me think of him with reverence – a ‘great’ actor,” he further added.

Hangal played Shambu Kaka in “Lagaan”.

Recalling the experience of working with him, Gowarikar said that he was “amazed to discover that Hangal saab was very close to the characters he played – upright, honest, dedicated and humble.”

“On the sets of ‘Lagaan’, I bonded with him exceptionally well. I saluted him then. I salute him today! And in years to come, he will always be reference point for me when I tell my actors – to perform naturally like the great actor A.K. Hangal,” he added.

Mumbai, Aug 26 (IANS)
”It will be difficult to find a kinder face than Hangal’s in the film industry,” Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan said Sunday in a tribute to the legendary actor who died here this morning.

The governor said that Hangal’s smiling, gentle face – both on and off-screen – always assured the people that he was a man with values who would stand by truth come what may.

“He was a great human being who received the love and affection of the entire film industry,” Sankaranarayanan said in a tribute.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan described Hangal as a person who came across as “an ideal and honest father figure” through his roles in Bollywood movies.

“Few may be aware that Hangal was a freedom fighter with a secular outlook who championed the cause of the working classes, and a renowned stage artiste who worked for and through the forum of Indian Peoples Theatre Association and (Mumbai’s) Prithvi Theatre (named after the legendary Prithviraj Kapoor)”.

“Though he was part of the film industry, Hangal always fought against obscenity and other ills in films,” Chavan said.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, in his tribute, said Hangal was “an actor with rare finesse” who left an indelible mark with any role he portrayed in his long career in film industry.

Pawar recalled his memorable roles in movies like ‘Shaukeen,’ ‘Aandhi,’ ‘Tapasya’ and the portrayal of a blind Imam Sahab (Muslim priest) in ‘Sholay’ with the unforgettable lines: “Itna sannata kyun hai, bhai?”

Assam faces more clashes in Kokrajhar and Dhubri Disricts

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 10:25 AM PDT

Guwahati:  Fresh incidents of violence were reported Sunday from Assam’s troubled Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts.

Police recovered the body of a missing person near Bogribari area in Dhubri district Sunday morning, while two people, including a woman, were injured in an attack by a group of miscreants in Salakati area of Kokrajhar district, a senior police officer said.

Five bodies were recovered from Chirang district Saturday evening, following which an indefinite curfew was clamped in the district and which continued Sunday.

Following the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) suspending its indefinite bandh to protest against the arrest of it’s legislator Pradeep Brahma last Thursday, the indefinite curfew in Kokrajhar district was relaxed from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Brahma was arrested for his alleged role in the violence.

The three districts of western Assam – Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri – have since July 19 witnessed violent clashes between the Bodos and Bengali-speaking Muslim settlers, which claimed 86 lives till Sunday.

The violence has displaced over 400,000 people – the majority of whom are still living in relief camps in the three districts.

India organizes Hearing for Nuclear Power Plants

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 07:53 AM PDT

India  has for the first time organized an independent hearing on nuclear power last week. According to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) important informations and documents have been withheld or delivered late in the official state’s hearings, even human rights have been violated in many cases.

Representatives of the church supported the protest. NGOs and international oberservers said that it was probably the first public event of this form in India. The event was organized by the Gandhi Peace Foundation, and took place in New Delhi starting at 11am local time on August 22nd. Independent experts informed the people of India about problems with the expanding nuclear energy industry. Protests from all sites of the large country were shown.

The 2011 census revealed India has a population of 1.2 billion people, and that large population is the reason why the government pushes its policy in an undemocratic manner, speakers said. There are six nuclear power plants spread across the nation.

A few days ago the first of two Kudankulam 1000 MW reactors at the south coast of India has become active. This project was planned for 9200 MW and has been accompanied by protests since a few years. Also the High Court of Madras is dealing with this case. Fishermen from Kudankulam who were protesting against the nuclear power plant complained during the hearing that the police has act with 56,000 FIRs against them.

Many people are concerned about possible dangers with nuclear energy after the Japan disaster in March 2011. In contrast, plans are under way to build the world’s largest nuclear power plant along the western coast of India. That plant’s output potential is estimated to be at 9900 MW.

The project is based on a contract which was signed between the French company Areva S.A. and the Indian state-owned nuclear company Nuclear Power Corporation of India in 2010 and will cost about $9.3 billion.

A jury was supervising the independent hearing in New Delhi: the social activist Aruna Roy, former Navy Chief Admiral L. Ramdas, the former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court Ajit Prakash Shah and the politician K. S. Subramanian.

Among the experts was Praful Bidwai, a journalist who writes especially against nuclear weapons and whose articles are published in national and international newspapers. Since 1967 India has developed to a nuclear-armed nation, but it is still one of three states worldwide which didn’t sign the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

Victims should be compensated for Wealth Loss during Accident

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 07:30 AM PDT

The Supreme Court has said that compensation to accident victims should be adequate and include not only damages for injuries but also for loss of earnings and inability to enjoy a normal life.

“It is suffice to say that in determining the quantum of compensation payable to the victims of accident, who are disabled either permanently or temporarily, efforts should always be made to award adequate compensation not only for the physical injury and treatment, but also for the loss of earning and inability to lead a normal life and enjoy amenities, which would have been enjoyed but for the disability caused due to the accident,” the court said in its recent judgment.

The apex court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya said: “The amount awarded under the head of loss of earning capacity are distinct and do not overlap with the amount awarded for pain, suffering and loss of enjoyment of life or the amount awarded for medical expenses.”

The court said this while awarding an accident victim, Kavita, who had suffered near permanent disability a compensation of Rs.34,38,747 and directed the same to be paid by respondent Deepak and others within three months.

However, the court said that the respondent was free to deduct the amount of compensation that had already been paid to Kavita.

The judgment authored by Justice Singhvi indicates the headings that could be covered while awarding adequate compensation to accident victims.

However, it would vary from victim to victim given the nature of injury and the percentage of disability caused by the accident.

The heads that could be taken into account for calculating adequate compensation to an accident victim include expenses towards medical treatment including those incurred during the pendency of the case, loss of future earnings on account of permanent disability, physical and mental pains, loss of amenities and loss of expectation of life.

Kavita suffered grievous injuries after the car she was travelling in was hit by a truck in Madhya Pradesh May 2, 2004. Kavita is currently in a vegetative state.

Kavita, who had moved the Tribunal under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, through her husband Deepak Singhal, had sought a compensation of Rs.85 lakh.

While seeking the compensation claim, she had alleged that the accident was caused due to rash and negligent driving and as a consequence, she suffered injuries to her head, mouth, right ear and other parts of the body and thus became disabled from doing routine work.

However, the tribunal awarded her compensation of Rs.four lakh which covered Rs.2,50,000 under the head of treatment expanses, Rs.1,25,000 under the head of permanent disability and Rs.25,000 for her pain and suffering.

However, the high court by its May 18, 2010, order had enhanced the compensation to Rs.16,76,480 and said that after deducting Rs.4 lakh awarded by the tribunal, the actual enhanced compensation came to Rs.12,76,480.

The apex court, while awarding the compensation of Rs.34,38,747, partially modified the high court order by enhancing the compensation.

The compensation awarded by the apex court was distributed under the heads of medical treatment and medical expenses during the pendency of the appeal, expanses of attendant for next 25 years at Rs.2,000 per month, future medical expenses (physiotherapy) for next 25 years at Rs.3,000 per month.

Besides this, the court awarded compensation under the head of loss of earning during the period of treatment, loss of future earnings on account of permanent disability, physical and mental pains, loss of amenities and loss of expectation of life.

ULFA warns of attacks on ‘Indians’ living in Assam

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 04:28 AM PDT

Guwahati: In a surprise move, United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has warned of attacks on “Indians” in Assam if “atrocities” on Assamese people did not halt in other parts of the country.

This move can elude all the sympathy and support Assamese have gained  during recent violence.

A statement signed by its elusive chief Paresh Baruah alleged that 14 Assamese youth had been killed in “mainland India”.

“The atrocities on Assamese … must be stopped immediately, failing which we will be forced to take necessary action on Indians living here,” said the statement.

The statement also warned India-based Muslim groups against spreading communal hatred in Assam.

It charged All India United Democratic Front chief Badaruddin Ajmal with spreading communal hatred by saying Muslims were being killed in Assam.

The ULFA statement follows ethnic violence in Assam and the consequent flight of thousands of Assamese from places like Bangalore and Pune due to mysterious telephonic threats.

How Government Machinery has been misused against Baba Ramdev

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 04:11 AM PDT

After he started his anti Black Money Campaign, Baba Ramdev is being targeted by various Agencies following his Vast Yoga Empire. This all started after he started his fast against UPA Government’s Reluctance to bring Black Money in May last year.  In the words of Arvind Kejriwal, a whole team of Income Tax Officials was deputed to discover ways to nab Baba Ramdev. Below is the collection of news from past one year which is Self Explanatory to suggest how Government Machinery is being used against Anti-Graft Campaigners.

July 23 , 2011

CBI grips hand over Acharya Balkrishna, who is the representative of Baba Ramdev in all his trusts. CBI has registered a case against him in the fake degree matter. CBI says the degree, which he had used to obtain a passport, was fake. A Look Out Circular (LOC) has also been issued against Balkrishna so that he does not escape from the country.

The central agencies, including Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax department, have also started probing foreign funds received by trusts associated with Ramdev and Balkrishna, including Patanjali Yogpeeth and Bharat Swabhiman Trust.

July 19, 2012

Days ahead of his proposed agitation against black money in Delhi, yoga guru Baba Ramdev's convoy was on Thursday attacked in Bhopal.

According to reports, the yoga teacher's car was targeted by a group of men, believed to be Congress workers, who pelted stones and raised slogans against him.

July 23, 2012

The CBI has registered a case of cheating and criminal conspiracy against Balkrishna on July 23 last year for allegedly procuring fake degree and violating Section 12 of Indian Passport Act by furnishing fake and forged High School and graduation certificates to the passport authorities for obtaining the document.

August 26, 2012

The Enforcement Directorate will soon question Ramdev’s close aide Balkrishna in connection with a money laundering case registered against him even as yet another enterprise of the yoga guru has come under the scanner of the agency.

The probe against Ramdev’s trusts had begun last year.

The agency had registered the money laundering case against Balkrishna acting on the CBI FIR which had charged him with violations of the Passport Act.

The ED, which enforces the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), suspects that Balkrishna, who has been looking after various trusts run by Ramdev, could have parked the alleged laundered money abroad using the forged passport as claimed by CBI.

Balkrishna is now out on bail after he was arrested by CBI for allegedly submitting fake documents for obtaining Indian passport.

IAC Protest against Coalgate a grand Success says Kejriwal

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 03:30 AM PDT

Police used tear gas and water cannons as hundreds of anti-corruption activists led by Arvind Kejriwal staged noisy protests near Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s residences.

What began as a trickle of protests swelled dramatically after noon, taking Delhi Police by surprise as large numbers of India Against Corruption (IAC) supporters carried out their threat of besieging the houses of Manmohan Singh, Gandhi and BJP president Nitin Gadkari.

But while the area Gadkari’s residence was largely peaceful, the show of strength took place near Gandhi’s 10 Janpath residence and near 7 Race Course Road, the prime minister’s residence.

As slogan shouting protesters broke through police barricades after hours of drama in the heart of the capital, police opened up the water cannons and used lathis to disperse them.

Hundreds were arrested and forced into waiting buses.

Both Kejriwal and lawyer-cum-IAC leader Prashant Bhushan accused police of using force without provocation.

“There was no need to do all this,” Bhushan said, speaking from inside a bus. “They have unnecessarily used water cannons and tear gas.”

Kejriwal called the protests “a success” and said the IAC had managed to drive home the point that both the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were to blame for the irregular coal blocks allocation — an issue that has crippled parliament.

“We have exposed the real face of the government,” Kejriwal told a defiant crowd drenched by water. “We have shown that both the Congress and BJP have looted this country.”

Around 2.30 p.m., more than seven hours after it all began, Kejriwal formally called off the protests.

Police justified the use of force, saying the IAC protest in the VVIP areas was unauthorized.

Early in the morning, police detained Kejriwal and six activists but released them after about two hours from a police station when hundreds of supporters gathered shouting slogans.

Kejriwal was stopped near a police barricade close to Manmohan Singh’s residence with two others.

Another IAC leader, Manish Sisodia, was detained outside 10 Janpath along with a colleague.

“Some of the detained people were manhandled,” an IAC spokesperson told IANS.

After the group was let off, Kejriwal and everyone made it to Jantar Mantar in the city centre and vowed to return to Manmohan Singh’s residence — which they did.

Kejriwal asked why the government was stopping them.

“The Congress and BJP hold so many protests. They are never stopped. When Raj Thackeray holds a rally without police permission and thousands attend, they are not stopped. If we protest quietly, why are we detained?”

By noon, hundreds, some waving the Indian flag, proceeded towards the houses of the prime minister and the Congress president, at times sprinting and taking an outnumbered police by surprise.

While Kejriwal was near Manmohan Singh’s residence, Bhushan joined the protesters near Gandhi’s residence.

At one point, scuffles broke out as police tried to push back the charged up activists. The crowds kept trying to advance shouting “Halla Bol!” and “Want want justice!”

Kejriwal vowed to keep the protests going — in the long run.

“If they think they can go on indulging in corruption, we will protest. We will definitely protest. It is our revolution,” he said.

In a surprise move, Delhi Metro announced they would keep open all six metro stations that were to be shut from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday in a bid to foil the protests.

Yash Chopra’s Romance to be shot in Kashmir Valley

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 12:30 AM PDT

Yash Chopra’s unnamed Romantic Movie will be shot at Kashmir after the shooting gets over at Ladakh. Shah Rukh Khan is shooting this movie along with hot Katrina Kaif. A shot is also planned at Dal Lake.

Chopra and his crew arrived at Srinagar on Saturday to work for the yet untitled movie, whose first teaser has already been released in theatres.

Sources close to the shooting crew said after his arrival, Chopra drove directly from Srinagar airport to Pahalgam hill station in south Kashmir from where the shooting of his new movie would begin in the Kashmir Valley.

“After starting the shooting schedule from Pahalgam, Shah Rukh will shoot portions of the film in Zabarwan Hills on the banks of the Dal Lake,” a source told IANS.

Further details of the shooting are being kept under wraps.

“The exact timing of shooting and its locations are being kept a secret to avoid the huge rush of King Khan fans and lovers, who could interfere with the shooting because of their enthusiasm to have a glimpse of their superstar,” added the source.

Shah Rukh, who features in the movie alongwith Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, completed shooting his part in the Ladakh region of the state, from where he flew to Mumbai early this week.

The 46-year-old is said to be playing an army officer named Samar in the movie, which is likely to bring back the actor in his evergreen, ever-loved romantic avatar.

With the overall improvement in the situation of the state, Bollywood has now renewed its relationship with Kashmir, where some of the better known hits of yesteryears like “Kashmir Ki Kali”, “Silsila” and “Junglee” were filmed.
