Abu Jundal records key information before Mumbai Magistrate

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 04:30 PM PDT

Abu Jundal, key 26/11 handler and suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, Sunday recorded his confessional statement before a Mumbai magistrate, a police official said.

Jundal, one of the masterminds of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, has reportedly provided details of the entire operation.

The statement was recorded in the chamber of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate P.S. Rathod, the official said.

The recording of Jundal’s statement came a day before his custody is scheduled to end Monday.

Last week, a day after Jundal was brought face-to-face with the lone survivor among the 10 Pakistani terrorists involved in the attack, Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, he voluntarily offered to give his confessional statement, which would be used as “testimonial evidence” in the Mumbai attack case.

The investigators will now study Jundal’s statement and check on the discrepancies in it in comparison with Kasab’s earlier confessional statements pertaining to Pakistan’s involvement in the 26/11.

Hailing from Beed district in Maharashtra, Jundal was working in Saudi Arabia before being deported to India in June. He was arrested by Delhi Police on arrival.

He was brought here by Mumbai Police late last month and later kept in the high-security Arthur Road Central Jail where Kasab is also lodged.

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 12:13 PM PDT

Sushil Kumar London OlympicsWrestler Sushil Kumar repents that he could not hear the National Anthem at  London Olympics more than anything else. The national anthem is played at major international sporting events only for the gold winner. Sushil Kumar said he wanted to win the gold in the men’s 66kg freestyle wrestling event and hear India’s national anthem.

Sushil lost the Sunday final to Japanese Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu, settling for a silver and becoming the first individual athlete from India to win medals back-to-back in the Olympics.

Sushil, bronze winner at Beijing Games, went injured into the match and four fights in a day did not help his cause.

“Injuries are part and parcel of the game. But I would have loved to hear the national anthem here. The golden days of wrestling (however) are back,” the 29-year-old told NDTV referring to the bronze won by childhood friend Yogeshwar Dutt in the 60kg category Saturday.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Sunday congratulated wrestler Sushil Kumar for winning a silver medal at the London Olympics and hoped that his feat will motivate a new generation of sportspersons.

In his congratulatory message, the prime minister said: “By improving his performance during the London Olympics over the Beijing Games, he (Sushil Kumar) has proved his determination and sheer tenacity.”

In her message, Meira Kumar said Sushil Kumar’s achievement reflected his “hard work, determination, and focus” and hoped it will inspire youth to excel in sports.

Indian Railways, where he also works has announced a cash award of Rs.75 lakh for the medal winner.  Railway Minister Mukul Roy said that Sushil Kumar had brought glory to the nation and had done the railways proud. He announced an award of Rs.75 lakh for the wrestler who works in the Northern Railway.

Yogeshwar Dutt, a wrestler from Haryana’s Sonipat district, had won a bronze medal in wrestling Saturday. The Haryana government announced a reward of Rs one crore for him  also for his achievement.

23 Charged for Riots at Azad Maidan Mumbai

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 10:52 AM PDT

Mumbai Police has booked 23 people for  the Violence in the Riots at Azad Maidan for past 24 hours which led to the death of 2 people and over 100 injured including 45 Policemen.

The accused were presented before Magistrate P.S. Rathod who sent them to police custody till Aug 19, said lawyer Husen A.R. Shaikh, appearing for one of the accused.

Police said in their remand application that the violence appeared to be “pre-planned and pre-meditated” given the systematic manner in which it was carried out outside Azad Maidan, he said.

Muslim groups called Saturday’s gathering to protest killing of Muslims in Myanmar and Assam.

Other charges slapped on the accused included physical attack on police and public, theft of government weapons and unlawful assembly, said Shaikh.

Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy told the media: “We have set up a special team to investigate the entire incident and find out the causes and the people behind it.”

Roy said police were studying the speeches of organisers to determine if they were provocative.

Shaikh claimed his client Ghulam M. Musa Sheikh, a 22-year old final year engineering student from Bandra’s Rizvi College, was innocent and he was picked up as he went to collect his vehicle parked near Azad Maidan.

The other accused are: Fahim Sheikh, Alamgir Pathan, Jamir Sheikh, Mohammed Wasim Sheikh, Javed Sheikh, Sakir Sheikh, Mohammed Bilal Sheikh, Mohammed Abdul Razzak, Aslam Sheikh, Ghulam M. Musa Sheikh, Mohammed Umer, Anwar Qureshi, Mohammed Momin Umer, Mohammed Ansari, Rihan Rashid Sheikh, Mohammed Ahmed, Imran Sheikh, Anis Danare, Afzal Sheikh, Umer Ansari, Amin Chaudhari and Abbas Ujjainwala.

Roy said CCTV records were being scanned to identify the rioters for the violence which paralysed Mumbai for several hours.

The trouble affected a two kilometre radius around Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, opposite the Azad Maidan, the venue of the Saturday procession.

Roy said the extent of damage to public and private property was being studied. He added that the organisers will be ordered to compensate for it as per the laws.

Some people were questioned to know their antecedents and role in the violence.

A group of youths attacked journalists and police personnel and damaged public and private vehicles.

Taking police and the organisers by surprise, the attacks quickly spread, engulfing the media, police, even some participants in the procession, vehicles and media vans.

At the final count, 49 BEST buses were damaged, 12 police vans were hit, including three which were burnt, 50 private vehicles, including three vans of private TV channels, were torched.

After a tense Saturday, Mumbai bounced back to its usual self.

“The situation is calm, road traffic is normal, all public buses and suburban train services are functioning as usual,” a city control centre official said.

Police maintained a tight vigil all over the city and surroundings.

Sushil Kumar’s Village drowned in Carnival after his Historic Olympic Silver

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 09:03 AM PDT

Sushil Kumar London OlympicsIt was carnival atmosphere at Baprola village on the outskirts of Delhi as celebrations broke out after local wrestler Sushil Kumar Sunday got a silver medal at the London Games and became the only Indian to win back-to-back individual Olympic medal.

While the silver was enough for the locals to celebrate, there was disappointment at Sushil’s residence as family members couldn’t believe that their son missed the gold medal by a whisker, losing to Japanese Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu in the final of the men’s 66kg category.

The media persons started to trickle in right from the morning and a huge crowd also gathered at the residence of Diwan Singh, Sushil’s father.

And while Diwan stood in disbelief that his son missed an Olympic gold medal that was there for taking, wild celebrations started.

The drums started beating along with fireworks. Sushil had just created history by becoming the first Indian to win back-to-back Olympic medals. Sushil added the silver to the bronze he won four years ago in Beijing.

Sushil’s mother Kamla Devi started distributing sweets, but Diwan was not impressed.

“I am really angry. I don’t know what to say. The gold medal was there for taking. I don’t know how he missed it. Sushil deserved the gold medal,” said Diwan.

But as Kamla Devi treated her husband with some sweets, the smile was back on Diwan’s face.

“I prayed to god to change the colour of his bronze into gold. There is a bit of disappointment that he didn’t win the gold, but for me silver is fine. I am proud of my son,” she said.
