DRDO to develop Agni 6 Missile by 2014

Posted: 23 May 2012 07:30 PM PDT

Agni 6 MissileAfter the much popularized  and successful testing of Agni 5, now the Scientists in DRDO have geared off to start the next episode of Missile, Agni VI according to a report. The Missile is expected to have the range of 10000 km and would be tested by 2014.

It will be a three-stage missile and taller than the Agni-V. The design is just taking shape and other sub systems are under development. If everything goes as per the programme, the missile will be ready by mid 2014.

Unlike the bulky Agni-III, the new generation Agni-VI missile will be more trendy and sleek, so that it can be easily carried to any place and deployed as and when required. While the length of the missile would be reportedly around 40 meters as against Agni-V's 17.5 meter, its diameter will be 1.1 meter, which is almost half of Agni-V. The missile's launch weight would be around 55 tonne.
The Agni-VI is said to be the latest and most advanced version among the Agni series of missiles. It will have the capability to be launched from submarine and from land-based launchers. The DRDO is also working on integrating Agni-V with submarine.
The new missile will also carry more number of warheads than any other versions. While Agni-V can carry up to three nuclear warheads, sources said the next missile in the series can carry even up to 10 nuclear warheads, capable of hitting multiple targets simultaneously.

Indian Army Chief of Staff VK SinghDefence Minister A K Antony yesterday hosted a farewell dinner for Army Chief Gen VK Singh who is retiring on May 31.

The Army Chief attended the dinner by the Defence Minister at the Army Battle Honours Mess at Delhi Cantt and the President will host a banquet for him today.

In the meantime, Army Chief Gen V K Singh  yesterday issued show cause notice to a Lt Gen, who could head the force in two years, for censure on account of lapses on his part in handling a case of a failed intelligence operation in Assam’s Jorhat district last year.

The notice charges Lt Gen Dalbir Singh, GOC 3 Corps, who is in the line of succession after Army Chief-designate Lt Gen Bikram Singh, with “abdicating responsibility” in handling an intelligence and surveillance unit in a “most unprofessional and lackadaisical manner”.

Gen V K Singh has said in the notice that it appeared to him that censure at the level of Chief of Army Staff in appropriate form is called for on account of the “lapses on your part”.

Accordingly opportunity is hereby afforded to you to explain the reasons for the aforesaid lapses. Reply to this show cause notice is requested within seven days of its receipt, failing which it would be assumed that you have no grounds to urge against the proposed action and an ex parte decision may be taken,” the notice said.

The issue relates to proceedings of a Court of Inquiry (CoI) convened by Headquarters Eastern Command to investigate circumstances under which 3 Corps Intelligence and Surveillance Unit (CISU) conducted an operation in Jorhat on the night of December 20-21 last year and other circumstances.

This is not the first time that Gen V K Singh has tried to initiate a disciplinary action against Lt Gen Dalbir Singh. In March, he had recommended a CBI probe against him for alleged involvement in a scam in Cabinet Secretariat but was turned down by the Government.

Rajiv Gandhi’s Killer tops Class 12 Examination with Flying Colors

Posted: 23 May 2012 03:41 PM PDT

Even as they face the gallows, two convicts in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case have come out with flying colours uin the Plus 2 examinations in Tamil Nadu.

According to officials, Murugan alian Sriharan and A.G. Perarivalan alias Arivu had scored high marks.

Murugan got 200/200 in Commerce and an overall 80 percentage (983/1,200 marks) while Perarivalan scored 91 percent (1,096/1,200 marks).

The two wrote the exams as private candidates at the Vellore jail.

A total of 35 prisoners from different jails in Tamil Nadu appeared for the Plus 2 exams this year. All of them have passed.

“The atmosphere in the prisions is changing for better. We look at prisioners as individuals,” S.K. Dogra, the additional director general of police, told IANS.

According to him, there seems to be an improvemnt in self discipline among prisioners and they work hard.

“Further there is now far more trust between the prisioners and the jail officials,” Dogra added.

A Tamil Tiger woman suicide bomber assassinated Gandhi at an election meeting near Chennai on May 21, 1991.

Perarivalan is facing the gallows, along with Murugan and Santhan. The three had sought a stay on their execution on the ground that the President had taken 11 years in deciding their mercy pleas after the apex court rejected their petition in August last year.

Perarivalan was 19 years when he was picked up by the CBI on June 11, 1991. He was charged with assisting the assassination by buying a nine-volt battery to assemble a bomb for Sivarasan, one of the assassins. Perarivalan is the youngest accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. An avid reader, Perarivalan has been fond of poetry and the teachings of Tamil saint poet Thiruvalluvar.

Zohal HamidPutting a fullstop to the Pomersbach Controversy, American woman Zohal Hamid  has decided to withdraw all the charges against  Australian cricketer Luke Pomersbach after both the parties reached an out of court settlement.

Hamid’s lawyers will soon move the Delhi High Court seeking withdrawal of the case registered against Pomersbach who was arrested last Friday and later granted bail.

Pomersbach, is playing for Royal Challengers Banglore in the ongoing Indian Premier League. She will also drop legal proceedings against RCB director Siddharth Mallya for casting aspersions on her character through tweets after she complained to police about molestation by the cricketer.

In a late night Tweet Siddharth Mallya said, “So glad that all charges have been dropped and Luke can return down under A FREE MAN!” “I’ve always been a very loyal person who stands up for friends. The tweets/comments made were unfortunate, being the product of stressful circumstances & I realise people drew meaning and connotations other than and beyond what was intended against Zohal,” he tweeted.

Royal Challengers player Luke Pomersbach was arrested last Friday after American national Zohal Hamid alleged he molested her and hit her fiance Sahil when he objected to the cricketer’s behaviour. Pomersbach was arrested and a court granted him bail later

Vodafone India places 20 percent hike in Revenues

Posted: 23 May 2012 09:34 AM PDT

Vodafone India has posted a 19.5 percent increase in service revenue at Rs.3,21,184 million during the financial year ended March 31, but said its initial public offering (IPO) may not happen this year.

The firm had posted Rs.2,69,366 million service revenue during the previous financial year.

Its ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) was at Rs.85,493 million, up 21.6 percent against Rs.70,301 crore in the previous fiscal.

“We have had a really good year with very strong operational performance, continued revenue market share growth and an improvement in margins,” said Marten Pieters, managing director and chief executive officer, Vodafone India.

Vodafone India reported an average revenue per user of Rs.180 in the January-March quarter.

The operator also crossed 150 million subscribers base while its net port in through mobile number portability stood at around 1.7 million as on March 31, 2012.

About the IPO, the firm said it might not be in a position to launch it if the government accepts the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on spectrum auction.

“It is highly unlikely that we are able to do an IPO in the middle of so many spectrum auctions. It depends on what the final decision on auction of spectrum will be,” Pieters told reporters.

What Indian Political Community opines about Petrol Price Hike?

Posted: 23 May 2012 09:03 AM PDT

Political Community in India have vehemently opposed the massive rise in the Price of Petrol today. Both allies and Opposition have registered their disappointment with this move of Government.

Petrol prices will rise between Rs.7.54 and Rs.7.98 in the four metros following a base price hike of Rs.6.28 per litre exclusive of taxes, effective midnight.

This whole petrol price hike is clearly unreasonable, arbitrary and is condemned as it will put further inflationary pressure and lead to further rise in prices. Life of the common man will become more difficult and miserable. The gross mismanagement of food and general economy by the UPA regime has led to the decline of the Rupee.“ BJP’s chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar said.

Reflecting public anger over the dramatic price hike, UPA ally Trinamool Congress slammed the move, saying the hike was “a burden on the common man”.

Asserting that she and her party were not consulted over this politically fraught decision, Banerjee said the trinamool was not pulling out of the government, but warned that this would cause more economic and political instability.

The DMK, another key UPA ally, was also disappointed and said it will take up the issue with the government.

The chief opposition Bharatiya Janata Party was unstinting in its denunciation of the price hike and accused the government of burdening the common man through “mismanagement of the economy”. The party demanded a rollback and asserted that it will take its protest against the price hike to the streets.

“It’s atrocious and unbelievable. The UPA government on its third anniversary has given the gift of fuel hike to the people,” senior BJP leader Prakash Javadekar told reporters here.

“This is injustice and there is no justification for this,” he said.

BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain warned that the Congress would be taught a lesson in the general elections, adding that the UPA allies would face collateral damage for being seen to support the Congress over this unpopular move. He accused the UPA of celebrating three years in power Tuesday when the economy was reeling.

Taking a dig at the UPA-II’s third anniversary celebrations, Hussain said the price hike has exposed the government’s claims of standing up for the common man.

“The government had taken this step emboldened by the presence of new allies,” he said, alluding to leaders like Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party and Lalu Yadav of the RJD sharing the stage with the UPA at the anniversary celebrations.

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman rebutted the government’s contention that the price hike was forced by the rise in global oil prices said it was merely using the global financial crisis as “an excuse for its mismanagement of the economy”.

The Communist parties, too, slammed the hike.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist said the economy was in a state of collapse.

D. Raja of the Communist Party of India said: “It is just a prelude. It will burden the common people and we will protest on the streets and the government will have to rollback the hike.”

“It is a cruel blow on people who are already suffering from severe price rise. The Left parties have called upon all party units to immediately organise powerful protest actions.”  said CPM general secretary Prakash Karat.
A defensive Congress, however, took refuge in the high global prices of oil. “Global prices are up and the oil companies take their own decisions after the deregulation of petrol prices. India is part of the world and so it is affected too,” said Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi.

“If rupee depreciates by one against the US dollar, our oil companies lose Rs 8,000 crore annually.” said  Oil minister S Jaipal Reddy. He further added, “Diesel is currently sold at a loss of Rs 15.35 a litre, kerosene at Rs 32.98 per litre loss and oil firms lose Rs 479 on sale of every 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder”

India subjected to the highest ever Petrol Price hike

Posted: 23 May 2012 08:54 AM PDT

Petrol Prices are up again, with the highest one-time increase in the retail Sale of Petrol. A massive Rs 6.28 increase per liter which amounts to an increase of  about Rs 7.5 after including the taxes. The hike will be between Rs.7.54 and Rs.7.98 in the four metros and would be higher or lower in other cities depending on the extent of taxes levied by the concerned state.

The otherwise economically sound move by the government to offset a spiralling import bill at a time when the rupee has depreciated to a record low of Rs.56.19 against the dollar, however, raised the heckles of the country’s growing middle class which has been particularly vocal against the hike, as they are the most affected by higher petrol costs.

It also drew flak from the government’s allies and the opposition, alike who demanded a rollback.

India Inc. welcomed the government’s move, saying the increase had become inevitable with the continued slide of the rupee’s exchange rate.

“The inflationary impact of such an increase is once and for all and therefore transitory. It can be mitigated by reduction in taxes both by the central and state governments,” the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry said.

Given the losses being incurred, the Company is compelled to increase the price of petrol by Rs.6.28 per litre (excluding VAT/Sales Tax) with effect from midnight,” the country’s largest oil firm, Indian Oil Company, said in a statement.

“This excludes losses already suffered till date during current financial year 2012-13, which would require an additional increase of around Rs. 1.50 per litre in selling price of motor spirit (MS) for balance part of the year,” Indian Oil said.

Petrol in Delhi will cost Rs.73.18 a litre, in Mumbai Rs.78.57 a litre, in Kolkata Rs.77.88 and in Chennai Rs.77.53 per litre.

The states levy sales tax of between 15 percent and 33 percent. Among the other levies are VAT and additional sales tax.

India deregulated petrol prices in June 2010 but continues to subsidise kerosene, diesel and cooking gas to protect the poor from the impact of inflationary pressures.

Petrol prices were last revised on Nov 4, 2011.

The oil companies have been losing Rs.8,000 crore per annum as they were being forced to sell petrol at subsidised rates.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister S. Jaipal Reddy had said Tuesday the depreciation of the rupee had necessitated an immediate increase in fuel prices.

Cellular Towers donot cause Cancer says Research

Posted: 23 May 2012 08:17 AM PDT

There are no conclusive scientific studies anywhere to prove low radiation emitted from cellular towers can cause cancer in human beings, and authorities must gear up to tackle other environmental issues that cause the lifestyle disease, experts said at a conference here.

“There is no conclusive scientific fact which can directly link cellular tower radiation with cancer. There are various other environmental risk factors also which could be responsible for increasing cases of cancer and authorities should look into it,” said Ajay Kumar, the sole Indian member on the World Medical Council, a representative body of doctors across countries.

“Till the theory of the health hazards of cell phone radiation and towers gets a reliable backup of scientific proof, it would be highly unfair to censure the most wonderful technological advent of the 20th century for health risks and diseases as serious as cancer,” Ajay Kumar, a former president of the Indian Medical Academy, said.

There has been a massive public outcry over the health hazards of cellular tower radiation in all major cities. People across the country have lot of confusion and misconception about radiation, and they suspecting mobile towers for increasing cancer risk.

India has roughly 400,000 towers according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Several organizations and citizens groups across the country have been protesting over the years against radiation from mobile towers, pointing out that these pose a grave health hazard.

After a string of street protests stalled life over cellular towers during the past few weeks in Jaipur, experts gathered here Monday for a conference on “Cellular towers and radiation – What’s true & what is not”.

Hemant Thacker, a consultant at Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital, who has come across a case where more than two residents in the same building developed cancer after the mobile tower was set up on the building, said: “There is no study prima facie which directly co-relates the two.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “considering the very low exposure levels and research result collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the week radio frequency signals from base stations and wireless network cause adverse health effects”.

“There is no scientific study or proof till now, which can conclusively say that cell tower radiation cause cancer. People have more of misconception than understanding over the issue,” D.P. Singh, a senior radiation oncologist with Jaipur’s SMS Hospital, said.

Subir Ganguly, head of radiotherapy at Kolkata’s NRS Medical College and Hospital, said: “It is very important to have conclusive scientific proof on the issue. This calls for immediate research to find out links, if any, between cellular tower radiation and increasing incidences of cancer.”

The Cellular Operation Association of India (COAI) conducted a study last year on electromagnetic radiation from cell towers.

The study, conducted by IIT-Madras and Thiagarajar College, Madurai, found that cell phone tower radiation at 96 locations in Mumbai was within the permissible level of 4,500 mW/sq m.

In front of Nehru Science Centre it was 20 times lower, in Phoenix Mills 144 times lower, in Bandra’s Kala Nagar 17 times lower, in Oberoi Mall 64 times lower and at JJ flyover 29 time lower.

Air India discovering new routes to Fly Abroad

Posted: 23 May 2012 07:14 AM PDT

Air India is planning to discover new routes for its International Flights in order to increase its Revenue. It is planning a feasibility study to determine the international destinations the airline will fly to as it faces a shortage of pilots and to close down loss-making flights.

“We are going to conduct a route feasibility study by which we will see which routes we can operate to in the new scheme of things. We will take into account the economics, load factors and importance of the destination,” a senior official with the flag carrier told IANS.

The airline also extended its contingency plan, under which it is operating, till June 1. By then it expects to have completed the route feasibility study. The earlier deadline for the contingency plan to end was May 25.

“The earlier contingency plan was supposed to have ended on Friday (May 25), but it now seems that the stir is going to run longer as pilots have not yet returned to duty even after the courts ruled the strike illegal,” said the official.

However, the official said, the 15-day old pilots stir has given the airline to close some of the loss-making routes temporarily.

Under the current contingency plan for international operations, the airline is operating a bare minimum number of operations by clubbing flights to destinations in Europe and the US.

The national carrier’s till now has lost revenues worth Rs.250 crore due to the continuing impasse between agitating pilots and the management.

“The loss due to ticket cancellations, unused labour and with the bulk of our Boeing-777 fleet grounded now stands at Rs.250 crore. Our losses per day have come down from Rs.13-15 crore to Rs.10-11 crore due to the contingency plan,” the official said.

The official said the agitating pilots, who are on a mass sick leave, had been asked to undergo medical check-up by a board of doctors from the Indian Air Force immediately.

“They (pilots) will be checked by Indian Air Force doctors. If they clear it and are actually sick, then it is valid, but if they fail the test and come out to be absolutely fine, then they can either join back or resign,” the official said.

Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh told the Rajya Sabha that striking pilots were not listening to his appeals to withdraw their agitation despite the assurance that they won’t be victimised.

“I committed in the house that no victimisation would be done. But pilots are not listening. That is where the situation stands today,” he told the members who have expressed concern over the issue.

The airline has so far sacked 101 pilots.

Meanwhile, to mitigate losses and to win back passenger trust, the airline has started a special scheme whereby passengers can advance, postpone or cancel their tickets without any extra charges till May 22.

The airline has deployed the Airbus family of aircraft such as A320, A321 and A330 for international routes.

It is operating only eight of its 17 Boeing-777 aircraft which are normally manned by the pilots belonging to Indian Pilots Guild (IPG), who are now on strike.

Trouble started for the airline May 8 when pilot-members of the IPG took mass sick leave, protesting the management move to provide Boeing-787 Dreamliner training to pilots from the erstwhile Indian Airlines.

The pilots have made four demands which include exclusive flying rights on Boeing 787 aircraft, payment of arrears from 2007 onwards, travel on first class when not working, and the right to be promoted as commanders within six years.
