Expressing doubts whether creation of Lokpal will put a lid on corruption completely, former president A P J Abdul Kalam today said Lokpal would only fill up jails and children and youth could begin eradicating corruption from home.

“What Lokpal will do is if it finds anyone guilty it would put them in jail, and jails will be filled up. What we want is nobody should go to jail … as we want good human beings,” Kalam said while interacting with children here.

Launching the Jharkhand Chapter of “What Can I Give Mission”, the missile man advised the children to make their homes corruption-free by preventing memberd of their family from indulging in graft. Asking the children to take the oath that there would be no corruption in their families, Kalam told them to “say no” if they are given any inducement for any wrongdoing.

“If you do that, corruption will go away in no time,” he said, adding “home of ethics” would prevent filling up of jails. Stating that the youths are the great resource and hope of the nation, Kalam asked them to work for bringing happiness to their homes and keeping the environment clean.

The former president inspired the children that their careers would get wings if they become aware that they were not born to crawl but have enormous potential, goodness, ideas, dreams, greatness and confidence to excel.

Multitasking dampens productivity among Men

Posted: 02 May 2012 03:21 AM PDT

People multitask not because they are good at it but because it makes them feel good, says a new study, which explains why it is so popular, though unproductive.

Researchers had college students record all of their media use and other activities for 28 days, including why they used various media sources and what they got out of it.

The findings showed that multitasking often gave the students an emotional boost, even when it hurt their cognitive functions, such as studying, the Journal of Communication reports.

“There’s this myth among some people that multitasking makes them more productive,” said Zheng Wang, assistant professor of communication at Ohio State University, who led the study.

“But they seem to be misperceiving the positive feelings they get from multitasking. They are not being more productive – they just feel more emotionally satisfied from their work,” added Wang, according to an Ohio statement.

Take, for example, students who watched TV while reading a book. They reported feeling more emotionally satisfied than those who studied without watching TV, but also reported that they did not achieve their cognitive goals as well, she said.

“They felt satisfied not because they were effective at studying, but because the addition of TV made the studying entertaining. The combination of the activities accounts for the good feelings obtained,” Wang said.

Wang conducted the study with John Tchernev, graduate student in Communication at Ohio state. She said many studies done in lab settings have found that people show poorer performance on a variety of tasks when they try to juggle multiple media sources at the same time: for example, going from texting a friend, to reading a book, to watching an online video.

India to have dedicated Airforce and Naval Satellites by 2014

Posted: 02 May 2012 02:17 AM PDT

India’s Navy and Air Force will have dedicated communication satellites between 2012 and 2014, Defence Minister A.K. Antony told parliament on Monday.

In written replies to questions, Antony said the naval satellite is planned to be launched in 2012-13, while the air force communication satellite is planned to be launched in 2013-14.

He also said that the tri-services defence communication network (DCN) is being progressed as per the defence procurement procedure.

The DCN envisages a network of optical fibre cables, satellite, earth stations and transportable and portable satellite terminals with high security features.

The design for these systems have features that enable conduct of simultaneous real- time networked operations from multiple sites to cater for contingencies and failures, as well as hardware redundancies for fail-safe operations

India commissions Naval Base at Lakshyadweep

Posted: 02 May 2012 01:13 AM PDT

India has taken a major step towards strengthening of the security of its island territories, an issue that has acquired urgency in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai terror strikes, by commissioning a full-fledged naval base in the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea.

The base, christened INS Dweeprakshak, was commissioned on Monday at Kavaratti in the Lakshadweep archipelago by Southern Naval Commander Vice Admiral K.N. Sushil.

Following a 50-man honour guard, the naval base was named by Lakshadweep State Social Welfare Board chairperson Sunitha Ismail.

The base’s first commanding officer, Captain S.M. Hanchinal, read out the commissioning warrant and hoisted the naval ensign.

At the ceremony, Sushil said: ‘Lakshadweep islands form the maritime frontiers of our country on the western side.’

He noted that the commissioning of a full-fledged naval base was another milestone in the commitment of the Indian Navy to maintain effective coastal surveillance and defence capability.

The officer also informed that the radar stations and other surveillance measures were in place for shipping traffic monitoring and intelligence gathering.

The Indian Navy has been operating a detachment at Kavaratti since the early 1980s.

With the commissioning of INS Dweeprakshak, the island territories would see calibrated strengthening of assets in step with their growing relevance to the security calculus of the nation.

A firmer footing in the islands, which are spread out astride some of the busiest shipping lanes of the world would provide the necessary wherewithal to the Indian Navy to suitably discharge its responsibilities.

Indian naval warships, on anti-piracy patrol in the south Arabian Sea, would now extend their reach farther with base support from INS Dweeprakshak.

The INS Dweeprakshak commanding officer will also function as naval officer in charge of Lakshadweep and Minicoy.

Lakshadweep is India’s only coral island chain. The archipelago consists of 36 islands, 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks.

Only 10 islands – namely, Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy – are inhabited.

Kavaratti is the administrative headquarters of the union territory. The islands are restricted area and a permit is required to visit the islands.

The islands have a total area of 32 sq.km. and the lagoons enclosed by the atolls cover an area of 4,200 sq.km.

“Bharti Airtel’s 4G LTE deployed on Huawei’s TD LTE technology will allow subscribers to experience high speed wireless internet access that can support bandwidth intensive applications, support video streaming and high-definition video conferencing,” Huawei said in a statement.

“Under this agreement, Huawei will deliver the LTE solution comprising of network infrastructure and devices,” it added.

4G is a successor to the 3G and 2G families, and is said to be five times quicker than 3G services.

Airtel had bagged Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum in four circles — Kolkata, Maharastra, Punjab and Karnataka — for Rs.3,314.36 crore in 2010.

It launched the service in Kolkata last month with another Chinese company ZTE.

“High speed wireless broadband has the potential to transform India, providing a robust platform for building the country’s digital economy,” said Sanjay Kapoor, chief executive officer Bharti Airtel (India & South Asia).

“According to industry estimates, mobile data traffic in the country will increase nearly 100-fold by 2015 and consumers will stream nearly 600 hours of video content,” he added.

Reliance Infotel, earlier known as Infotel Broadband Services, which won a pan-India licence for BWA spectrum, is yet to announce its roll-out plans for 4G services.

Other firms which have won spectrum in the auction include Qualcomm, Tikona, Aircel and Augere. Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei Tuesday said it will deploy and manage Bharti Airtel’s 4G network in Karnataka.

Man lighting up street Lamps using Dog’s Faeces

Posted: 01 May 2012 11:58 PM PDT

A 41-year-old former banker in Britain has come up with a pioneering scheme where he aims to collect four tonnes of dog waste every day across just one county and then process the faeces to light street lamps.

Gary Downie has struck a deal with the local council to set up such waste processing stations around Flintshire, in north Wales, the Daily Mail reported.

The waste collected will be broken down by micro-organisms and turned into power, through a process called anaerobic digestion.

The dog waste would be thrown into an airtight “methane digester”. The mixture would be stirred to help methane rise to the top of tank. After the tank fills up, a pipe brings the methane to a lamppost where it is burned.

Downie vowed to clean up the streets after he became fed up with pushing his baby’s pram through pavements that were covered in dog faeces.

He has invested 10,000 pounds into designing the power stations with his business partner Christopher Dunn. They set up a company called StreetKleen.

He hopes to have the first waste bins in place in the county by July.

On the reasons behind the idea, he said his five-year-old chiled studies at Broughton Primary School, the teachers at the school have had to wipe dog mess off children’s shoes.

Anaerobic digestion is a process in which micro-organisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen.

Meet Thai Woman in love with a street Dog in Bihar

Posted: 01 May 2012 11:51 PM PDT

Their love knew no boundaries. This is the story of Thai national Fa Tha Nik who has returned to India to take Prince, an ailing German Shepherd she adopted here, back home with her.

“I cannot live without Prince and it appears that Prince also cannot live without me. We love each other like brother and sister,” Nik told IANS.

She adopted the dog and kept it at the Buddhist monastery here she helps run. She went back to Thailand a month ago. But soon Prince fell ill. His misery pulled Nik back – she returned Saturday.

“Last week, when I was informed that Prince was ill, I decided to visit Bodh Gaya for its treatment,” she said.

She now plans to return to Thailand along with Prince on May 9.

“I had approached the local authorities for the documents required to take Prince to Thailand,” she said.

Her bond with Prince is four months old.

“During my visit to the Vajra Bodhi Society here in early January, I was attracted to this dog after he behaved like a friend. It was a different experience. I then decided to adopt and look after him,” she said.

“After Prince was brought to the monastery, his love for me was unbelievable!” she said.

However, as soon as she left, Prince became upset, she said. “Despite good food and medical treatment, he was not doing well,” she said.

Bhante Manoj of the Bodh Gaya Mahabodhi Temple Management Committee said Prince fell ill soon after Nik left for Thailand. “It is a unique case of love between a human being and an animal,” he said.

He said the news of Nik’s return to Bodh Gaya for the sake of Prince has become a hot topic among local residents.

PMANE starts indefinite fast against Koondakulam

Posted: 01 May 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Chennai: At least 24 activists of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) Tuesday launched an indefinite fast at four villages in Tirunelveli district, around 650 km from here, in protest against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP).

While 14 indefinite fasters are in Idinthakarai village, eight are in Kuthenkazi village and one each in Kudankulam and Kuduthazhai villages.

According to M. Pushparayan, a PMANE leader, more women have proposed to join the indefinite fast protest based on the outcome of a scheduled meeting with the Tamil Nadu government May 3.

India’s nuclear power plant operator Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIl) is building the KNPP at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu.

Work at the project had come to a standstill last year after villagers in the area, fearing for lives in case of a nuclear accident, mounted an intensive protest.

The Tamil Nadu government had earlier passed a resolution asking the central government to halt work at the plant and to allay the fears of the locals.

To resolve the issue, the central and state governments set up two panels.

The central panel submitted its final report Jan 31. The Tamil Nadu government set up another expert committee which too favoured the project.

In March this year, the state government gave its green signal to the project and also announced Rs.500 crore for local area and infrastructural development.

Following that, work at KNPP was restarted with police protection.
