Kudankulam Nuclear Plant to start Operation by August

Posted: 19 May 2012 07:08 AM PDT

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) Friday announced that the first of the two 1,000 MW units of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) is expected to start commercial operations this August and the second unit in March 2013.

The announcement on NPCIL’s website as to the expected month of commercial operation of the first unit has now eased the mental pressure on people at KNPP as the government has been saying that the first reactor would start operations in 20 days’ time.

For a long time, NPCIL officials had been telling IANS that they could not give any tentative month for the commissioning of the first unit as it would be like pressurising the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) in giving various permissions.

Meanwhile, work on the opening of the first reactor’s pressure vessel is progressing at good pace and the dummy fuel is expected to be taken out in a week’s time, a senior NPCIL official, who did not want to be identified, told IANS.

Dummy fuel is similar to the real fuel in terms of specifications but without the enriched uranium.

A team of nuclear experts from HRID Ltd, Croatia, will then inspect the reactor pressure vessel and other systems.

According to the NCPIL official, the AERB gives its clearances in stages. After studying the data submitted post removal of the dummy fuel, the AERB would decide on giving its consent for loading the real fuel.

Following that, permission has to be sought to increase the power generation in stages till the full capacity can be reached.

According to officials, while the focus is on commissioning the first reactor, some work is being carried out for completing the second unit construction.

Tata Steel Q4 net Profit reduces by 90 percent

Posted: 19 May 2012 04:36 AM PDT

Tata Steel which is considered as India’s figurehead steel Company,  has reported   a 89.64% decrease  in its consolidated net profit at Rs.4.33 billion for the quarter ending March 31, 2012, from Rs.41.76 billion in the same period last year.

According to a release here, the company’s total income from operations, however, increased to Rs.339.98 billion for the fourth quarter last fiscal from Rs.338.29 billion for the same period in the previous fiscal.

Tata Steel Group’s profit after tax (after minority interest and share of profit of associates) during the financial year 2011-12 stood at Rs.53.90 billion compared to a profit of Rs.89.83 billion in financial year 2010-11.

Group EBITDA in FY12 was Rs.135.33 billion compared to Rs.171.16 billion in FY11.

The Indian operations registered robust performance in FY12 amid growth concerns in the domestic market,” Tata Steel managing director H.M. Nerurkar said in the release.

High raw material cost and volume impact hurt domestic operations. Steel demand in emerging markets increased but it dropped in Europe towards the end of the quarter on the back of the Eurozone crisis,” chief financial officer Koushik Chatterjee told reporters in Mumbai. He, however, said global steel demand will improve in the current fiscal with stable raw material prices.

Referring to capital expenditure, Chatterjee said the company would invest close to USD 2.5 billion this fiscal, mainly for the Kalinganagar greenfield project in Odisha, alongside expansion at Jamshedpur. “The company’s net debt increased slightly to Rs 47,697 crore with a debt, equity ratio of 1:1. Going ahead, we will try to maintain this ratio,” Chatterjee said.

Performance of the company in the current financial year was expected to be boosted by the start-up of the brownfield expansion at Jamshedpur, where trial production has begun, Nerurkar said, adding work on the greenfield project in Odisha was on track.

Posted: 19 May 2012 03:07 AM PDT

A 12-and-a-half-year-old boy from Bihar has cracked the highly competitive Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE).

Satyam Kumar of Bakhorapur village in Bhojpur district qualified from the Mumbai zone with an all-India rank of 8,137.

“I am happy to crack IIT-JEE but I will not join IIT this year because of my poor rank. I will attempt next year for a good rank,” Kumar told IANS over telephone Saturday.

Kumar said he was keen to develop a software company on the lines of Facebook.

Kumar’s father, Sidhnath Singh, a farmer, is proud of him.

“It is a matter of pride that my son is the youngest to qualify for IIT-JEE,” he said.

Kumar is still awaiting his class 12 results.

According to the father, Kumar passed the Class 10 board exam from Modern School in Kota, Rajasthan.

He said his son was intelligent since early childhood.

“He used to impress everyone with his talent even when he was barely five years old.” This is why, the father said, he sent the boy to Kota for higher education.

“The entire village celebrated his success bursting firecrackers and consuming sweets,” Singh said.

Defying the scheduled start date of Sri Amarnath Yatra of June 25, some Hindu  groups have decided to start the Yatra on June 3 itself.  Earlier, Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) daid it will organise the pilgrimage from June 25 to Aug 2, a total of 39 days.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Shiv Sena and Bajrang Dal want the pilgrimage to last 60 days starting June 3.

A VHP spokesman told reporters Saturday: “Come what may, we will start the yatra from June 3.”

SASB said the schedule of the pilgrimage was worked out after considering weather, terrain and other aspects.

It also pointed out that a growing number of pilgrims were losing their lives each year en route to the cave dedicated to Hindu god Shiva and located at 13,500 feet above sea level.

The route leading to it is highly treacherous and receives heavy snowfall.

Shiv Sena state unit chief Ashok Gupta said: “If 117 pilgrims died last year, it was the failure of the board and the government.”

The board says it is working overtime to ensure the pilgrimage begins on time. But it is facing problems due to inclement weather in the south Kashmir region.

More than 630,000 pilgrims visited the shrine last year, breaking all records. This year 150,000 pilgrims have registered themselves since May 7 when the registration opened, according to SASB sources.

Sunny Leone gets shy while shooting Lovemaking Scenes in JISM 2

Posted: 19 May 2012 01:28 AM PDT

Sunny Leone Jism 2Director Mahesh Bhatt has made a sensational revelation about Sunny Leone , who  is shooting  for JISM 2 in Sri Lanka these days. All that glitters is not gold and all porn stars are not bold, says the inimitable Mahesh Bhatt while revealing that Sunny Leone was shy and uncomfortable while filming the lovemaking scenes with Randeep Hooda in her Bollywood debut “Jism 2″.

“I always knew that she is a very shy person. Just because she is a porn star doesn’t mean that she has lost her feminine quality of being shy. During the lovemaking scene with Randeep she was finding it very difficult to do it comfortably,” Bhatt, who is producing the film, told IANS over phone from Sri Lanka, where “Jism 2″ is being shot.

” ‘Jo nazar aata hai wo hota nahin hai’. All that glitters is not gold, all soldiers are not brave, all holy men are not holy and all porn stars are not bold. At times reality is different,” added the filmmaker.

The Indo-Canadian adult star of Punjabi origin was finalised for the role by Bhatt during her stint in the reality show “Bigg Boss 5″.

“Jism 2″ is a sequel to 2003 film “Jism”, in which Bipasha Basu’s steamy scenes became the talk of the town.

Pooja Bhatt, who had produced the original, is directing part two.

Sunny surprised the entire crew with her shy behaviour.

Everyone was surprised with her shyness, but I understood that it will be difficult for her. It’s not easy to shoot a lovemaking scene; it is a very demanding thing. Those who believed that it would be a cakewalk for her will be shocked by this revelation,” said Bhatt, who has also written the script of the film.

“Jism 2″ will see Sunny as seductress Izna. The love triangle also features Arunoday Singh.

Randeep, who shot lovemaking scenes with Mahie Gill in “Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster”, was equally uncomfortable while shooting the scenes.

Even for Randeep it became very challenging although he has shot similar scenes before. One has to understand that it’s not a fighting scene,” Bhatt said.

Named by Maxim as one of the 12 top porn stars in 2010, Sunny, whose real name is Karen Malhotra, recently, celebrated her 31st birthday in Sri lanka.

Bhatt said Sunny wants to move on from being just a porn star and is looking forward to establishing herself as a part of tinsel town.

Sunny is concerned how she will be perceived by the world as an actress because everybody knows her just as an adult star. She wants to be known for something more than that,” he added.

Sunny’s career seems to have taken off here. Apart from “Jism 2″, she has also bagged a role in a sequel to “Ragini MMS”. She has also endorsed a phone and a condom brand.

The Complete Saga of Siddharth Mallya IPL Controversy

Posted: 19 May 2012 01:11 AM PDT

Siddharth MallyaZohail Hameed, is an American woman who has added a new chapter to the growing IPL Controversy. Yesterday she filed a complaint against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) player Luke Pomersbach for allegedly molesting her. Delhi Police arrested Pomersbach, who was later released on bail by a city court.

Siddharth Mallya, accused her of talking nonsense and went on to say "she was all over me last [late on Thursday night] and asked for my bbm [blackberry messenger] pin."

Later Mr. Siddharth Mallya defended his tweet but said that he was not questioning her character but merely stating a fact. "I don’t take any comments back. The tweet was in response to what she has said and I don’t think there is anything wrong in that," he told 'NDTV.’

"I maintain that if Luke is in the wrong he would face the necessary sanctions. I don’t think it is derogatory because I heard that the lady is speaking about beating up of her fiance. The guy was not exactly her fiance."

"Luke is my player and RCB is like one family. So I would, of course, try and protect my player. But I maintain that I haven’t spoken to him yet," he said. "What this girl is doing is idiotic," Mr. Siddharth Mallya wrote on his twitter page.

After this controversial Tweete, Zohail Hameed has sought Mallya’s unconditional apology, her advocate Jitender Garg said.

Garg told IANS: “A legal notice is issued to Sidhartha Mallya for his twitter comment. We will wait for his reply. And if he refuses to apologise, we will file a defamation case against him.”

Defending his son’s remarks, RCB owner Vijay Mallya said he was not a child and tweeted his impressions about the "lady’s conduct."

"Twitter is a global forum and he has been tweeting for a while and he has his set of followers," Mallya senior told NDTV when asked whether his son’s tweets were appropriate.

Asked whether he had a chance to speak to Mr. Pomersbach, Mr. Mallya senior said, "No I haven’t. This could have been probably one of the late night brawls. But we at RCB have always said that law should take its own course."

Meanwhile, women leaders and activists on Friday criticised Mr. Siddharth Mallya for his comments casting aspersions on the character of the American woman.

Reacting to his tweets, activist Ranjana Kumari said nobody had a right to sexually assault her.

"This kind of juvenile irresponsible behaviour will not be acceptable in the country, whosoever the person may be. He must apologise to the women of the country," she said.

Whatever her profession or character or her background, Ms. Kumari said nobody was supposed to ask such questions. "What he is doing by tweeting and behaving the way he is behaving, it is insulting women.

"By insulting women, he becomes an accomplice of a criminal because sexual assault is a criminal act. If some player who belongs to his team or his father’s team has done it, he is trying to protect the player; by doing that he should also be arrested," she said.

She said Mr. Siddharth Mallya was equally guilty of the charge because he was the accomplice of a criminal who had sexually assaulted another woman.

Congress spokesperson Renuka Choudhury said: "The easiest thing you can do is to denigrate a woman. He is a young man. I will give him good advice as a mother that you have to learn to respect women whatever the character is."
