US brewer says sorry for Kali-Ma Beer

Posted: 15 May 2012 08:09 AM PDT

A US brewer says it is “scrambling” to rename its new beer “Kali-ma“, after the Hindu goddess Kali, following an outpouring of criticism from Hindus with the issue being raised in the Indian parliament.

The label of the beer made by Burnside Brewing Company in Portland, Oregon, featured the four-armed goddess Kali standing among three severed heads.

“In response to pleas from the Hindu community we have decided to postpone the limited release of ‘Kali-ma’ our imperial wheat ale flavoured with Indian spices and Scotch-Bonnet peppers,” the company said in a statement on its Facebook page.

“It is NEVER our intention at Burnside to offend or alienate any race, creed, religion or sexual orientation, the company,” it said.

Burnside Brewing owners said they got the idea from the movie “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, where Jones is forced to drink a potion called “the black sleep of Kali Ma” that puts him into a trance.

“The inspiration for the beer label simply came from a favourite childhood movie in the ‘Indiana Jones’ series and we were unaware that it could be offensive to anyone.”

The brewer said it was “currently scrambling to re-name the beer and intend to release it soon afterwards”.

“To those who have been patiently waiting, we humbly ask that you wait just a little longer and to anyone we have offended we sincerely apologise,” it said.

The issue was raised in India’s upper house Tuesday with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding that the government immediately summon the US ambassador as the religious feelings of Hindus were being hurt.

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “The UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government claims good relations with the US… Is there no manufacturing code there.”

“Can they show the god of any other faith like this.”

The BJP member asked the government to “summon the American ambassador” immediately.
Responding to the demand, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla said he would “inform the external affairs minister (S.M. Krishna) immediately”.

India cuts Iran crude imports by 11 percent

Posted: 15 May 2012 03:44 AM PDT

In the face of US sanctions on Iran, India has decided to reduce crude oil imports from the gulf nation by 11.1 percent to 15.5 million tonnes during the 2012-13 fiscal, Parliament was informed Tuesday.

“The target fixed for import of crude oil from Iran for the year 2012-13 is approximately 15.5 million tonnes,” Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas R.P.N. Singh told the Rajya Sabha.

Total crude oil imported from Iran by Indian companies during 2010-11 and 2011-12 was 18.50 million tonnes and 17.44 million tonnes, respectively, Singh said in a written reply.

India imports 80 percent of its crude oil requirements of which Iran supplies as much as 12 percent.

Iran is India’s second largest oil supplier. But the US has been rallying for reduction of crude imports to force the Islamic republic to stop its military nuclear programme that Tehran says is only for civilian peaceful usage

The US suspects that under the guise of its peaceful nuclear programme, Iran is building atomic weapons.

Earlier, India had maintained that it was not possible to take any decision on reducing imports from Iran drastically as it was important in meeting India’s growing energy needs.

Earlier this month in an interview to a television channel, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had also said that the United States will work to help India with technical assistance to reduce its dependence on Iranian oil.

Colors’ Show Balika Vadhu completes 1000 episodes in Air

Posted: 15 May 2012 01:55 AM PDT

TV Show on Colors Baika Vadhu has successfully completed 1000 episodes, which in itself is a landmark.
The serial deals with child marriage, a social custom that is outlawed, but still practiced in some parts of India. Anjum Farooqi, who plays Gauri in the show said that she feels great to be associated with a show, which has completed 1,000 episodes.

“I feel great to be associated with ‘Balika Vadhu’. It is such a privilege to be associated with a cult show like this. I could never imagine that I would be part of such a show,” Anjum said Monday.

“Balika Vadhu” was first aired July 21, 2008 and the main story revolves around Anandi, now played by Pratyusha Banerjee. In the show her husband Jagdish leaves her and marries Gauri, played by Anjum.

The actress says she is glad that the audiences have accepted her character.

“I am really glad that the audience has accepted my character. I was very reluctant to take on this role. The audience knew and loved Anandi and Jagdish and this was a challenge for me,” she said.

The entire cast of “Balika Vadhu”, except Surekha Sikri, who plays Dadisa, were present at the event, where Laxmi Sargara, a victim of child marriage, was also felicitated.

Married when she was only a year old, Sargara has now legally annulled her marriage.

Talking about her shooting experiences with her co-star Shashank Vyas, she said that both of them have high tempers and that they often end up arguing in reality.

“Shashank and I fight on the sets many times. While pretending to fight during our scenes, we sometimes start fighting in reality. Our tempers are so high at that time that we fight even if the other person makes a silly mistake,” she said.

Smita Bansal and Anup Soni too feature in the show as Anandi’s in laws.

Andimuthu Raja gets bail in 2G Scam after 14 months

Posted: 15 May 2012 12:43 AM PDT

Controversial telecommunications minister A. Raja (Andimuthu Raja) finally got the bail in the 2G spectrum Scam case after a long time of 14 years..The bail was granted by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special judge O.P. Saini. Raja has been in the capital’s Tihar jail since February last year.

Raja’s counsel told reporters that the judge called Raja towards him and told him: “Your bail application is allowed.”

The announcement triggered wild slogan shouting and cheering by his DMK supporters mainly from Tamil Nadu, who raised slogans in Tamil like: “Raja, vazhga!” (Long Live Raja!)

Besides the 14 individuals, three companies were also charged in the case.

“Thirteen people had already got bail, and Raja was the last to get bail,” the counsel said.

“Raja had not moved bail until all other 13 were granted bail,” he added. “Now all the accused are on bail. The case will go on.”

The counsel pointed out that Raja had got bail despite the CBI’s opposition.

The CBI had opposed Raja’s bail application, saying he faced charges of accepting bribes of Rs.200 crore, which makes his case different from former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura, who was granted bail by the Supreme Court last week.

Raja, in his bail application, has requested the court to release him on the ground of parity.

The agency said that important prosecution witnesses of department of telecommunications and other private people, especially connected to alleged bribe transaction of Rs. 200 crore from DB Group companies to Kalaignar TV, are yet to be examined.

It told the court that if the accused was released on bail at this crucial stage of trial, then he may influence the vital witness as some of them belong to his state Tamil Nadu.

Raja resigned as minister Nov 14, 2010 in the wake of the Comptroller and Auditor General reporting that his 2008 decision to allocate 2G spectrum on a first-come-first-served basis had caused the exchequer a presumptive loss of Rs.1.76 lakh crore. The CBI arrested him Feb 2, 2011.

The Supreme Court in February cancelled 122 spectrum licences allocated during Raja’s tenure. It also ruled that all natural resources should be allocated through an auction, which the government is now preparing to do in the case of the cancelled licences.
