Bihari girl unfurls Tiranga on Everest Peak

Posted: 26 May 2011 07:39 AM PDT

Kathmandu/New Delhi, May 25 (IANS) The Indian tricolour and Indian Air Force (IAF) flags flew atop Mt Everest once more Wednesday as five more climbers from the IAF expedition summited the world's highest peak before finally calling it a day due to inclement weather.

Squadron Leader Nirupama Pandey, 31, from Bihar, and Flight Lt. Rajika Sharma, 28, fromHimachal Pradesh, as well as three male colleagues stood on the 8,848-metre peak between 10-11 a.m., the IAF support staff told IANS from the Everest base camp.

They were accompanied by six high-altitude Nepali Sherpa guides.

The three IAF men are Squadron Leader Devidutta Panda, 34, from Orissa, Lance Corporal Ganesh Singh Pokhriya, 26, from Himachal Pradesh, and Sergeant Jasbir Singh, 38, fromPunjab.

The group had started out for the summit from the last camp on the Everest slope at 9.30 p.m. Tuesday.

This is the second group from the IAF expedition to summit after the first one reached the top of the world May 21.

Flight Lt Nivedita Chaudhary, 27, from Rajasthan became the first woman from the IAF Everest Expedition 2011 to ascend the summit May 21, followed by Corporal Raju Sindhu, 26, from Haryana.

Since then bad weather and the high traffic on the peak made the rest of the expedition members retreat to the shelter of the lower camps, biding their time.

Though seven members of the expedition could not make the final attempt, including its leader, Group Captain Narendra Kumar Dahiya, it was decided that the team should pack up and begin to descend due to reasons of safety and weather.

In New Delhi, an IAF press release said: 'It is the first time in the history of IAF that women in blue have geared up to raise the pride of the nation to the highest possible point on earth.'

The team had been flagged off by the Air Officer-in-Charge Administration, Air Marshal J.N. Burma, on April 13.

The team, which followed the southeast route, comprises 11 women officers. It was accompanied by a medical officer and eight airmen, who are qualified mountaineers.

'Being the first women officers of the IAF to be in a situation where no other IAF women officer has been earlier, these women officers exhibited exemplary courage and determination in bringing laurels to the IAF and the nation,' the release said.

To undertake the challenge, the team underwent a strenuous training schedule, including a basic mountaineering course, and winter training camps at Siachen in 2010 and 2011.

They went on to scale progressively higher and tougher Himalayan peaks in the past two years, starting with Mt. Stock Kangri (6,121 metres) in Leh, Mt. Bhagirathi II (6,512 metres) in Uttarakhand, Mt. Kamet (7,757 metres) in Garhwal and Mt. Saser Kangri I (7,672 metres) in Ladakh.

This is the second IAF expedition to Mt Everest since the first one in 2005 via Tibet. The joy of summiting in 2005 was diminished by the death of Squadron Leader S.S. Chaitanya, who became separated from his Sherpa guide and lost his way while descending due to a snow storm and perished.

Women from India's defence forces also made their mark on Mt Everest the same year, putting four climbers from the Indian Army on the summit in an expedition led by Major S.S. Shekhawat.

Bihar doctors on no single conscientious regarding Private Practice

Posted: 26 May 2011 06:28 AM PDT

Patna, (IANS) Medicos in Bihar are divided over the issue of a ban on private practice by government doctors.

The Bihar branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Bihar State Health Services Association (BSHSA) are up against each other, with the latter favouring curbs on private practice by government doctors.

“We have urged the state government not to ban private practice (by government doctors) and make it only optional,” said Shahjanand Prasad Singh, vice president of the state IMA.

Singh said that government doctors who want to continue private practice should be allowed to do so. “The ban could be applicable only in the case of those doctors who are involved in jobs and opt for non-practising allowance,” he said.

The BSHSA has threatened to launch an agitation in June first week if private practice by government doctors was not banned.

“We will be forced to launch an agitation,” said Ajay Kumar, general secretary of the BSHSA.

The state IMA has also demanded the enactment of a medical professional protection law on the lines of a legislation in Andhra Pradesh.

The Bihar IMA’s demand for the legislation is linked to its claim that there has been an increase in incidents of violence against doctors and their property.

India to discuss building dams with Nepal

Posted: 26 May 2011 04:27 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 25 (IANS) Water Resources Minister Salman Khurshid Wednesday said India will hold discussions with Nepal to build check dams in the neighbouring country to address the problem of flooding in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

'In next few days, we will hold discussions with our counterparts in Nepal to address the immediate concerns of floods in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh,' Khurshid told reporters here.

The minister said that only immediate concerns will be taken up in the meetings for now, as long term measures can be addressed only when enough storage dams are built in Nepal to control flooding of rivers in the down stream area.

'There are not enough check dams in Nepal. The common perception is that water has been released from dams, but mostly the rain water flows directly into rivers causing floods inIndia,' he said.

Khurshid said the issue of building more dams could not be pursued in the recent years because of political instability in the Himalayan nation.

The minister added that the India's water resources secretary will take up the issue with the Nepal government soon.

'We are also taking help from the ministry of external affairs. Secretary, water resources, will travel to Nepal and take up the long term issues soon,' he said.

Parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are flooded during the monsoon season every year as water flows in from Nepal unchecked.

US professor encodes Tirhuta script in Universal Character Set

Posted: 26 May 2011 12:20 AM PDT

PATNA: A faculty member of Michigan University (US), Anshuman Pandey, has finally completed his stupendous project of encoding the `Tirhuta’ script (original Maithili script) in the Universal Character Set. Pandey’s work will assist in the preservation of ‘Tirhuta’ script, which is nearly obsolete in India, even amongst Maithili speaking people.

Traditional ‘Tirhuta’ script is the traditional writing with regard to the Maithili language, which is spoken in major parts of Bihar and in the Narayani and Janakpur zones of Nepal. The script is also known as `Tirhuta’, which refers to Mithila or Tirhut as these regions of India and Nepal are historically known.

To preserve the traditional script of Maithili, Pandey has been pursuing this project for the last five of years. This project was made possible, although only partly, by a grant from the United States National Endowment for the Humanities which funded the Universal Scripts Project. In course of the ongoing research, he has already consulted several Maithili scholars, besides books and journals from Nepal Research Centre at Kathmandu.

Patwatoli village churns out 5 IITians this year

Posted: 25 May 2011 11:21 PM PDT

GAYA: With five of its boys making it to the merit list of IITJEE, the gateway for the prestigious engineering institutes, Patwatoli, the village on the north eastern outskirts of Gaya town has kept to its reputation of being the breeding ground of IITians.

With more than 50 IITians in its ranks, the village comprising 1,600 families and nearly 10,000 residents, has the unique distinction of having the highest IIT density in the country. Besides the 50 plus IITians, the village has, in the span of the last two decades, produced more than 200 engineering graduates, several of them being NITians.

No less important is the fact that, for the first time, two girls from the town have also cracked the test, regarded the toughest in the country. More importantly, the first girl IITians do not have the Patwatoli tag on their success report, thereby making their achievement all the more praiseworthy, says fiction writer Syed Ahmad Qadri. The girls, who made it to the 2011 IIT, are Richika Garg and Kusum Kumari. Kusum belongs to the OBC category. Richika passed the Class X examination fromNazareth Academy.

The Patwatoli boys who made it to the IIT this year are Dev Narain Prasad, Anuj Kumar, Alok Kumar, Dev Kumar and Sumit Kumar. The Magadh Super 30 patronised by senior IPS officer Abhayanand had two of its students making it to the IIT. The Magadh Super 30 boys making it to the IIT are Ajay Verma and S Kumar.

Lord Vishnu Super 30, the splinter group of Magadh Super 30, produced three IITians in its maiden attempt. The Lord Vishnu Super 30 products making it to the IIT are Harsh Ranjan, Rahul Kumar Saxena and Kusum Kumari. Both Magadh Super 30 and Lord Vishnu Super 30 operate on charity and coach talented but economically weak students.

According to activist Gopal Prasad, a Patwatoli resident who has been monitoring the performance of the village boys, the IIT success rate, this year has been less than expected. “At least 10 of my boys should have made it to the merit list,” said Gopal. In 2008, eight Patwatoli boys made it to the IIT. In 2009, the success figure came down to six and improved in 2010, when seven Patwatoli boys made it.

Nav Prayas, an organization floated by Jitendra Kumar, the first IITian from the nondescript village, has been encouraging local boys for joint study. Tips given by the seniors, brainstorming sessions and group discussion format prepared by Nav Prayas has been very helpful for the Patwatoli IIT aspirants.

Faridabad: The crashed air ambulance was carrying 20-year-old student Rahul Raj, who was in a critical condition and was being shifted to Delhi’s Apollo Hospital.

A mission to save a life ended up in a huge tragedy and Rahul’s family is now waiting for the post mortem to end.

Rahul had recently gone into coma after suffering from jaundice for the past many weeks. When his condtion deteriorated further on Wednesday, doctors advised his family to get him airlifted to the Apollo Hospital.

His family members flew in early and were waiting for him to arrive in Delhi when they got this news.

“We were eating dinner when we got this news and ran to the hospital,” said Rahul’s uncle Mukesh Raj

Along with Rahul, there was a six-member team from Apollo Hospital on board the aircraft, and all of them were killed in the crash. The other three who lost their lives were three women sleeping on this balcony where the crash took place.

“My wife, daughter-in-law and daughter were killed on the spot,” said 55-year-old Shobhram.

Shobhram was downstairs when the crash took place. He managed to get his son and a few relatives out, but could not get back inside. This is something he said he’ll regret for the rest of his life.

Inside the Badshah Khan Hospital, there were three others who narrowly escaped. One of them is Omkar who was standing dangerously close to the site when the incident took place.

“I went to rescue some children, but turbine fuel leaked and burnt me. I jumped from the building but saw others who were burnt to death,” said Omkar.

The families were waiting outside the mortuary of the hospital to take the bodies as soon as the post mortems were over.

22 year old Engineering student elected as Mukhiya in Bihar

Posted: 25 May 2011 10:20 PM PDT

Patna, May 26 (IANS) A 22-year-old engineering student was elected as the head of a village council here, becoming possibly the youngest person to be chosen for the post in the ongoing Bihar panchayat polls.

Ajay Kumar, who is studying engineering at an institute in Jamshedpur in neighbouring Jharkhand, was elected mukhiya (village council head) of Haradaspur Diyara panchayat in Patna district.

Ajay defeated his grandfather Vasudev Rai and outgoing mukhiya Jagdip Rai.

“People have put their faith in me as they elected me to head the village council. They rejected my grandfather and outgoing mukhiya, who were more than double my age. It is a big responsibility given to me by the villagers,” Ajay told IANS on phone.

He said that people voted for him because he wanted to bring development to his village.

“My grandfather got only 20 votes. Both the old and young voted for me. I plan to change the face of my panchayat,” he said.

Like many of the over 8,500 panchayats in Bihar, Ajay’s Haradaspur Diyara panchayat is also without basic amenities like electricity, safe drinking water, health facilities and roads.

The Bihar panchayat polls began April 20 and will end May 28, by when a total of 262,000 panchayat members will be elected.

NIT Patna to get new campus ready in next 18 months

Posted: 25 May 2011 09:20 PM PDT

Since the institute does not have sufficient land at its Golakpur site, it has taken up vertical expansion instead of horizontal expansion to meet its ever-growing requirements, according to NITP director U C Ray. Union minister of state for HRD D Purandeswari laid the foundation stone of as many as four new buildings on the campus last week.

The new projects undertaken by the institute include construction of two hostels for boys, one for girls and a Student Activity Centre. All the hostels will be multistoried buildings accommodating more than 1,000 boys and girls. At present, a good number of students are compelled to reside in private lodges for want of accommodation in existing hostels on the campus. The Student Activity Centre would host cultural and other events. It would also provide medical and recreational facilities. It will have squash, badminton, tennis court and a gymnasium for students.

The Rs 105 crore project is likely to be completed within 18 months. It is being executed by Hyderabad-based IVRCL company.
