Marvelous performance of Patna students in ICSE exams

PATNA: City students have come out with flying colours in Indian School Certificate Education(ICSE) examinations for both class X and XII. Results of both the classes were declared on Tuesday evening.

International School, St Xavier’s High School, Don Bosco Academy have reported 100% result in class X.

Shree Ishita of International School has scored 97.8 %, followed by Piyush Raj of St Karen’s Secondary School, who has scored 97.2%. Vibhav Narayan Singh of St Karen’s and Pratush of St. Paul’s High School have both scored 97% marks in the Xth board result.

Shree Ishita has scored 99 % marks in environmental education, 98 in mathematics, Hindi and computer application and 96 % in science.

“I am very excited. I was confident of my performance though some uncertainty pervaded my mind,” she said and thanked her father, a Serviceman, and teachers for her success.

“It was my mother, Anita Gupta, who inspired me to aim high in life and study harder,” said the 16-year-old student, adding she aspired to make it to the IIT and later on become an IAS officer. Hard work and concentrating on study are the success mantras for her.

“We have been overwhelmed with the result. The quality of education has definitely played its part in the extraordinary show,” International School principal Farhat Hassan said and described Shree Ishita as a very bright student.

Piyush Raj also looked extremely excited. “I was not very hopeful of getting such high marks. Now, I am on cloud nine,” he said.

Ayush Abhishek, who has got 96%, is the second topper of International School. Mohit Anand is the third topper with 95%, while Meenal Banka has come fourth with 94.8%.

Among St Xavier’s High School students, Ayush Choudhary was the topper with 96.3 % marks. Aman Pratik stood second with 95.3% and Animesh Mishra came third with 95%.

Abhishek Neelabh Ghosh and Vishal Gaurav of Don Bosco Academy have got 96% marks. They were followed by Aditya Aman, who scored 95.6 %.

In class XII (science), Saket of Don Bosco Academy scored 93% to emerge as topper in the school. He is followed by Prayag Raj and Sibi John who have scored 91.8% and 91 % respectively.

The commerce stream topper of Don Bosco, Aman Theria has scored 90%. He is followed by Ankita Prabhakar with 87% and Vasundhara Sagar with 81 %.

At city’s Jesus and Mary School, the topper of class X is Nitish Kumar with 93%. Vikas Kumar got 90% and Vikram Kumar has got 88%.

CM inaugurates two community radio for farmers

Patna, May 17: Chief minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated two community radio stations for farmers today. He also flagged off Krishi Utsav Rath, which will visit all 38 districts to spread awareness on Kharif crops.

One radio station, which went on air today, has come up at Barauli Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Samastipur while the other has come up at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barh.

According to sources, the community radio will serve as channels for disseminating agriculture-related information as well as entertainment programmes for farmers, women and children in rural areas. The radio stations can emit signals in a 20km radius. During the event, a large number of agriculture scientists were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Nitish said the state government's special emphasis is on promoting better facilities for the farmers to bring about another green revolution in the state. "We want that every food plate in the country should have something produced from the state. Agriculture is a subject very close to my heart and it is a priority of the government now. I want farmers of the state to be self-dependent," he added.

During the event, the chief minister lamented the corruption in credit card scheme and said the government had a zero-tolerance policy towards any kind of graft. "Prima facie, it has come out that a few people in connivance with bank officials in Muzaffarpur have misused farmer credit card scheme to fill their own pockets and a number of police personnel are also involved. The matter is being investigated but these cases will not be taken lightly and no guilty will be spared," he said.

Nitish also stressed on the need for using water efficiently as Bihar has been witnessing severe water crisis. "Many farmers think that there is no dearth of irrigation facilities in our state, but as production increases, it would put pressure on irrigation facilities. Later, we will face problems as the water table has depleted rapidly and rivers like Ganga are drying up. In India, efficient use of water is only 29 per cent, which means that 71 per cent water is wasted. We should therefore opt for smart use of our natural resources," he said.

M.L. Chaudhary, the vice-chancellor of Rajendra Agriculture University and Bihar Agriculture University, Sabour, said these stations would broadcast programmes for two hours every day. "While the broadcasting times in the morning would be from 7am-8am, in the evening, it programmes will be aired from 6am-7am. Thirty minutes of morning and evening slots will have agriculture-related programmes, while in the remaining 30 minutes, programmes for women and students will be broadcast," he added.

According to sources, the raths launched on the occasion were part of the Krishi Vikas Utsav, which will commence on May 19 and will continue till June 10. During this period, different programmes will be organised at block-levels to promote hybrid paddy cultivation, bio-fertiliser usage and to train farmers.

Hegde claims to have invented Bio-Magnetic Pulsor

Patna, May 16 (PTI) Medical scientist B M Hegde today claimed that he has invented a medical device (Bio-Magnetic Pulsor) for treatment of various ailments afflicting the people. Addressing a press conference here, Hegde said that the mobile-shaped equipment Bio-Magnetic Pulsor (BMP) will generate energy upon press of a button and the same could be applied to the part of human body causing pain, allergy, fever, heart problems, blood pressure, cut and long-festering wounds. Hegde, who is also the chairman of a committee of medical experts constituted by the state government to suggest measures for health facilities to the people of Bihar, claimed 100 per cent success of the medical device in treatment of various ailments.The Padam Bhushan awardee medical scientist, said that he planned to launch the medical device in the market soon for the benefit of the people.Bihar Health Minister Ashwani Chaube, who was also present on the occasion, said that the state government will considering using the medical device in the rural areas for treatment of ailments of the poor people.The BMP may be used in government hospitals at a later stage for the benefit of the patients, he said

Dravid hopeful for WI tour

Mumbai, May 17 (PTI) Former captain Rahul Dravid is hopeful about the Indian cricket team improving upon its 2006 performance in the upcoming tour of the West Indies.

During the 2006 West Indies tour, the Indian team created history under Dravid’s captaincy when they won a Test series in the Caribbean for the first time in 35 years.

“We won the series there last time around but I hope we will do better this time,” he said on the sidelines of a promotional event here today.

“If the West Indies play their full strength side, they will be a tough team to beat. But it will be interesting to see if they have their full side.”

Dravid became only the second Indian skipper, after Ajit Wadekar, to have won a Test series in the West Indies when he led India to a 1-0 victory in a four-match rubber in 2006.

Sacked IPL cheer leader gets Bollywood offer

New Delhi, May 17 (PTI) Mumbai Indians cheerleader Gabriella Pasqualotto, who was sent home midway through IPL 4 for exposing the antics of some of the top players on a blog, has been offered a role in a major Bollywood movie and also been invited to the inaugural India Grand Prix in October.

According to a report in a South Africa newspaper, the 22-year-old has been flooded with media requests from all over the world since her return to her native country.

America’s NBC channel and top radio DJs from Australia have also requested for interviews of her.

The South African cheerleader, in a report, has claimed that her blogs were light, fun and innocent and not malicious.

Sehwag fit for English tour

New Delhi, May 17 (PTI) Virender Sehwag, who underwent a successful shoulder surgery in London last week, is expected to be fit before the important tour of England, according to the star player’s childhood coach A.N. Sharma.

“He spoke to me after surgery and informed that it went off well. He is hopeful he will recover in time for the England series,” Sharma said today.

When asked whether he would be able to bowl his off-breaks again, Sharma answered, “that completely depends on how quickly he gets the strength back in his shoulders. He will have an extensive rehabilitation programme at the NCA in Bangalore. Hopefully, everything will be fine.”

Sehwag left the IPL campaign after playing 11 matches as Delhi Daredevils were out of the race for play-offs.

Chief Ministers meet to be held at Patna

PATNA: The Planning Commission is holding a two-day meeting of the chief ministers of five states here beginning May 30 with Bihar playing host. CM Nitish Kumar said that the issues related to 12th Five Year Plan will be discussed at the meeting.

He said that like other states Bihar will also put forward its suggestions and demands. “For inclusive growth, the per capita investment should be increased here. Bihar needs more investment in infrastructure, power and other sectors. We will again put forward our demand for special category status to Bihar,” Nitish told mediapersons on Monday on the sidelines of Janata Durbar. A similar meeting had been organized by the Plan panel in 2006 in Kolkata which Nitish had attended.

The CM said that during his Delhi visit he met power minister Sushilkumar Shinde and demanded increase in Central allocation of energy to Bihar. He demanded full allocation for the state and added that during summer time as the supply is further reduced, special measures should be taken to tackle the power crisis.

Nitish said that Bihar`s per capita power consumption was one-sixth of the national average. From the allocation, power is transferred on priority basis to Nepal, the railways and defence installation after which very little is left. He pleaded that the state should get 50 percent of the power generated by the NTPC plants in Bihar.

“We are demanding this because recently the Prime Minister told a delegation of NDA MPs from Bihar that as a policy decision, the NTPC plants have to give 50 percent of the generation to the states where they exist. We should get 50 percent quota from Barh thermal power plant,” he said.

He also demanded 1500 MW from hydel projects in Bhutan and 600 MW from Arunachal Pradesh which has been agreed upon, but now it has been slashed. Shinde promised to look into this demand.

Reacting to development in BJP-ruled Karnataka, Nitish said that the trial of strength should be conducted on the floor of the assembly and the CM should be given an opportunity to prove his majority. “If the Centre makes any interference in this process it will be construed as an attack on state`s autonomy,” he said.

On the hike in price of petrol, the CM said, “The Congress aur mahngai mein choli daman ka sath hai.” Nitish said that soon after the results of assembly elections in five states, the Centre hiked the prices and now diesel, kerosene and cooking gas will also be made costly.

About his visit to China, Nitish said that it is fixed and he would go on a six-day visit from June 13.

Vijendar Singh marries Archana

New Delhi, May 17 (PTI) Star Indian boxer Vijender Singh today tied the knot with Delhi-girl Archana Singh in a low-key ceremony here.

The marriage was solemnised at the Delhi Flying Club and was attended by the family and friends of the 25-year-old boxer, who is India’s first Olympic and World Championships medallist. He claimed bronze medals in both these events.

The couple will host a reception at Vijender’s native village Kaluwas in Bhiwani tomorrow.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, BJP MP Shahnawaz Hussain, former Union Minister Captain Satish Sharma, Indian Boxing Federation chief Abhay Singh Chautala and national boxing coach G S Sandhu were among the prominent guests at the wedding ceremony, which lasted just a couple of hours before the couple and their families drove off to Bhiwani.

Kirsten unlikely to become RSA coach

Johannesburg, May 18 (PTI) Cricket South Africa (CSA) is tight lipped about the speculation that former India coach Gary Kirsten has emerged as the frontrunner for the position of new Proteas coach.

Dismissing talks that Kirsten, who lead India to victory in the World Cup on home ground, was the obvious choice, CSA said it had received “strong applications” from South Africa and abroad.

Former Pakistani coach Richard Pybus is considered to be a strong contender after Kirsten, while former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming and former Australian all-rounder and Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody are also believed to be the other applicants.

CSA on Monday started interviewing potential candidates to replace Corrie van Zyl, who returned to his position at the CSA High Performance Centre after the recent World Cup in the Indian subcontinent.

Nitish reviews the progress of Buddha Smriti Park

Patna, May 17: Exactly a year ago, His Holiness The Dalai Lama and chief minister Nitish Kumar had inaugurated the Buddha Smriti Park. Today, on the 2,600th enlightenment anniversary of Lord Buddha, the park stood at the centre of celebrations in the capital.

A year down the line, Nitish once again came to personally assess the progress of his brainchild project, which has been developed on a land, where the erstwhile Bankipur Jail stood, in the heart of the capital.

"Today is a historical, significant and sacred day. It is a matter of joy as this Buddha Smriti Park was also inaugurated on the same day last year. I am happy with the way this park has been developed into such a historically significant monument. I am also delighted at the growth of the plants from the saplings that were brought from the original Bodhi tree from Bodhgaya and Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka, and planted here by His Holiness The Dalai Lama," said Kumar.

The park developed at a cost of Rs 125 crore and sprawling across 22 acres, embodies a strong Buddhist connection of the state capital, wherein relics of Lord Buddha brought from six countries are enshrined in a 200-ft-high stupa called Patliputra Karuna Stupa.

Nitish arrived at Buddha Smriti Park at 9.15am sharp to be given a warm welcome by the monks and the priests at the entrance.

After expressing his gratitude to the monks, he went ahead and laid wreaths at the two Bodhi plants. Thereafter, he went to Patliputra Karuna Stupa, wherein he meditated for a few minutes along with other monks and priests. Later, amid chants of hymns and beating of odaiko, the CM moved towards the library building.

Nitish also cut the ribbon, inaugurating a picture exhibition at the library building. "A total of 87 pictures depicting the entire life of Lord Buddha and also pictures of some monuments in Bihar and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh have been put on display. The pictures have been offered by the Archeological Survey of India and the Patna Museum. The effort is to give a pictorial representation of the life of Lord Buddha to visitors," said Umesh Chandra Diwedi, additional director, Patna Museum, present at the occasion.

After the picture exhibition, Nitish spoke to reporters and expressed contentment on the progress of the park and also informed about further development of the park.

"A statue of Lord Buddha would be erected inside this park. Also, something like an information centre would also be developed here, where various objects related to Lord Buddha would be kept on display."
