Anna Hazare would stop taking Food from July 19 Posted: 24 Jul 2012 10:23 AM PDT Team Anna Figurehead and Anti-Graft Campaign Patron, Anna Hazare has declared that he would stop taking food and fast indefinitely despite his health concerns if Government fails to take immediate steps to check corruption even after 4 days of Fast by IAC Activists. India Against Corruption Members Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Manish Sishodia and thousands of others would begin their indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar starting from Tomorrow. Anna Hazare has refrained from fasting for first 4 days, but would continue to guide. However, there were different voices from Hazare and his team members. While Hazare spoke mostly on Jan Lokpal bill, his team members focussed on rampant corruption in the government and its institution. “They (Team Anna members) suggested I don’t fast. I will give four days to the government to agree to our demand and if they don’t, I will sit on an indefinite fast from July 29,” said Hazare, who had earlier decided not to go on fast due to his health problems. “Even if I die, I will die for my country,” said the social activist. This is not the first time Hazare, 75, is sitting on a fast. This will be his third indefinite hunger strike demanding a strong Jan Lokpal Bill that checks corruption at all levels. His earlier protests stirred a nationwide movement. His protests also forced the government to introduce the Lokpal bill in the parliament. Though the Lok Sabha passed the bill, the Rajya Sabha is yet to clear it. Speaking to reporters, the anti-corruption crusader said: “The government has deceived us again and again and tried to malign us. This government is trying to break my team.” According to Hazare, the corrupt politicians present inside the union cabinet and parliament could never allow for a bill like Lokpal to be passed. “Even before Lokpal, we demand that these tainted politicians should be brought to trial,” he said. Detailing Team Anna’s demands, Hazare’s key aide Arvind Kejriwal said that they have demanded “formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of three retired Supreme Court judges who have the confidence of the Indian public, to investigate the 15 tainted cabinet members, against whom, we have given proofs.” Team Anna had earlier given documents which they claimed contained proofs of graft against 15 union cabinet members, including Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. “As many as 162 Lok Sabha members and 39 Rajya Sabha members are also facing corruption charges. We demand that their cases should also be given to the fast track courts,” Kejriwal added. On Mukherjee’s election as president, Kejriwal said: “it is unfortunate that the constitution, which was meant to prevent corruption, gives immunity from both investigation and prosecution to the president. But we will continue to bring out his (Mukherjee’s) misdeeds in public.” Fellow Team Anna member, Prashant Bhushan added that “if the state of corruption in the country went unchecked, it would lead India towards civil war”. Bhushan’s father Shashi Bhushan claimed that the anti-graft movement would succeed in bringing out system-wide changes and “create a system of governance envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi.” |
Assam Communal Riots becomes bloody, Death toll reaches 32 Posted: 24 Jul 2012 09:49 AM PDT Communal Riots in Assam has taken a dirty large form killing over 32 people as per official data. This has taken place due to the fight between Bodo Tribals and Muslims in the regions. The situation is very dreadful. People who lost their near ones wept openly. Bloody Violence is taking place in both Kokrajhar and Chirang districts since July 19 as mobs of Bodos, who are tribals, and the Bengali-speaking Muslims set upon each other. As per Official Records 28 people have died in the Violence while 4 have been shot dead by Security Forces after they attempt to breach the Shoot at Sight Order. Shoot-at-sight orders and an indefinite curfew have been imposed in the worst-hit Kokrajhar district. In Chirang, a night curfew has been clamped from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Miscreants continued to set fire to houses left vacant by thousands who have fled to safer areas. The fire brigade and security forces struggled to put down dozens of fires. Inspector General of Police S.N. Singh told IANS that 19 people had been killed in Kokrajhar and nine in Chirang. He said the situation in the region was tense, and added that additional security forces had arrived in the two districts. More forces were being sent, Singh said. “Incidents of violence are taking place mainly in the interior areas of the districts. About 60 villages, mostly abandoned, were burnt by miscreants in the two districts,” said another official. The violence has also spread to Dhubri district bordering Bangladesh. Police opened blank fire there Tuesday to contain unrest. In Dhubri, curfew has been imposed in some “sensitive areas” including Gouripur, Golakganj, Bilasipara and Chapar. The three districts – Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri – share a contiguous landscape. While Dhubri is bounded by Bangladesh in the south, Kokrajhar and Chirang border Bhutan. More than 40,000 people have abandoned their homes and taken shelter in relief camps set up by the district administration. According to official sources, the violence started July 19 after gunmen attacked two student leaders in Magurbari Thursday. Following this, four former Bodo militants were shot dead. Both the communities then began attacking each other, accusing each other of orchestrating ethnic cleansing. Assam’s Parliamentary Affairs Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka and Revenue Minister Prithibi Majhi were deputed by Chief Minister Gogoi to visit the troubled spots. Director General of Police Jayanta Narayan Choudhury reviewed the security scenario with police officials. Railway officials said the running of several trains had been severely affected. All inbound and outbound trains were halted at various stations between Guwahati and Alipurduar. This has left thousands of train passengers stranded in the state. “While 20 trains have been rescheduled, 12 trains which were supposed to pass through the violence affected areas have been cancelled,” said a North Frontier Railway official. With communal violence in Assam leaving some 25,000 train passengers stranded, the central and Assam governments were Tuesday urged to provide security so that train services can resume. A total of 37 trains have been halted at various states. Officials said efforts were on to arrange for food and water for the stranded passengers. Railway Minister Mukul Roy made the request for additional security to Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, an official statement said. Roy said the train services had been crippled on a 54-km stretch between Srirampur and Salakati railway stations in Kokrajhar district. According to the ministry, 26 trains have been cancelled. Some miscreants attacked the Guwahati-bound Rajdhani Express at Gosaigaon Tuesday, forcing the authorities to take the train back to Alipurduar. |
Controversy over Prayers offered by Cine Stars in Ajmer Sharif Posted: 24 Jul 2012 06:30 AM PDT Ajmersharif A day after the dewan (administrator) of the world-famous Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti shrine termed prayers there by Bollywood actors and directors for the success of their movies and serials against Islamic) laws and Sufism, his statement drew strong protest from the shrine’s khadims (custodians). The shrine’s dewan, Syed Zainul Abedin Ali Khan, who is also the sajjada nashin (current head) of the Chishti order and claims to be a descendant of the saint, had said in a statement Sunday that prayers by actors, directors, producers and musicians at this 12th century shrine for success of their films and TV serials are “intolerable”. “Singing, dancing, pictures, videos and obscenity are prohibited in Islam. Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti has also advised people to stay busy in the prayers for Allah. However, this ideology is not being followed at present in the shrine and prayers are being sought for success of movies and TV soap operas,” he said in his statement. “It is a matter of worry that Islamic scholars and experts of Shariat laws are silent over the issue. The Islamic leaders should express their opinions regarding this freely so that this unholy practice at the shrine could be stopped.” The dewan said that use of a holy place of such religious belief in promoting and advertising commercial activities is wrong. “The movie producers and directors should refrain from such acts that hurt religious sentiments,” he said. He said that the shooting of movies is prohibited at the shrine for the very reason that it might hurt holiness of this place. “It has been seen often that movie stars and professionals try to draw the shrine into controversy by their acts. Singer and music director Himesh Reshammiya entering the shrine wearing a burka (veil) despite being a man and actress Katrina Kaif offering prayers wearing ‘indecent’ cloths are just some of the examples,” the dewan said. Some directors and actors are offering prayers only to promote their movies as they are covered by media when they come here, he added. However, the statement has led to a roaring controversy with the khadims, who also claim to be descendants of the saint, saying that the dewan has no right to issue such a statement. “People come from all over the world with prayers to this shrine. Only khadims have the authority to carry out prayers on behalf of these people. The dewan has no right to issue such a statement,” said a khadim. “He should concentrate on welfare works for the devotees and the shrine rather then issuing such statement,” the khadim added. The marble-domed tomb of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, located 145 km from Jaipur, in the middle of Ajmer’s walled city area, attracts a huge mass of people from all over the world who come here with an ardent wish and a prayer on their lips. Top cine stars, producers, directors and music directors including Shah Rukh Khan, Katarina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, A. R. Rahman and Ekta Kapoor visit the shrine frequently to offer prayers and seek success of their movies and TV serials. The tomb is located at the centre of a courtyard and is surrounded by a marble platform. It is believed that the remains of the Sufi saint, also known as Khwaja Garib Nawaz, lie buried at the shrine. |
Wipro posts flat Results in Q2 of 2012 Posted: 24 Jul 2012 05:30 AM PDT Wipro, the only Indian top IT Company which has retained its Founders as key executives is also battling to survive in the Slowdown hit Global Market. Wipro grew its topline and bottomline in double digits on annualised basis in rupee terms, its net income and revenue from its IT services business slipped sequentially in dollar terms in the first quarter (April-June) of this fiscal (2012-13) from previous quarter (January-March) of last fiscal (FY 2011-12). As a result, the company Tuesday projected a flat growth of $1.54 billion revenue from its global IT services for the second quarter (July-September) of this fiscal (FY 2013). “Revenue from our IT services business is expected to be $1.54 billion in second quarter (Q2) and marginally higher (1.3 percent) from $1,496 million ($1.5 billion) posted in first quarter (Q1) of this fiscal (FY 2013) under the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS),” the company said in a statement here. We see this shift as an opportunity for us to lead this change and help customers differentiate in this fast evolving market,” Wipro chairman Azim Premji said in the statement. The IT services business added 37 clients during first quarter, taking the total number of clients to 919 as against 943 quarter ago and 937 a year ago. “We have delivered revenues in line with our guidance in a volatile environment. We will continue to build differentiation and invest in technology driven business transformations for our customers as well as rewarding our talent,” chief executive T.K. Kurien said. The global IT services division added 2,632 people in the quarter, taking the total headcount to 138,552 employees as on June 30. |

Mamata Bannerjee demands rollback of Petrol Prices Posted: 24 Jul 2012 03:30 AM PDT Trinamool Congress supremo and West BengaL Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday expressed her “disappointment” over the announcement of a petroleum price hike, and demanded an immediate rollback of the raised rates. Banerjee also lashed out at the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance – where her party Trinamool Congress is the second largest constituent – for not discussing the matter with the allies. She demanded that the central government henceforth engage all political parties in wider consultations to chalk out future line of action to tackle inflation. India’s oil marketing companies Monday announced a hike in petrol prices by 70 paise a litre, with effect from midnight, citing rising international oil prices and decline in the rupee’s value. “The Trinammool Congress is extremely disappointed with the price rise of petrol. We don’t support this price rise of petrol. We protest this decision. We want an immediate rollback of the decision,” Banerjee was quoted as saying in a statement by Trinamool lawmaker Kunal Ghosh. Banerjee asked the central government not to increase the petroleum prices as it puts additional pressure on the masses who are currently reeling under inflation. The firebrand leader said the decision has been taken “unilaterally” by the Central government without any discussion with the allies especially Trinamool. “It has not been discussed with us. The tactics to increase oil prices on frequently is not a solution. It only puts a burden on the common man who are currently suffering due to inflation,” Banerjee stated. She also demanded that henceforth the central government engage all the political parties in chalking out a solution to tackle the price rise of essentials and containing the oil rate hike. Earlier on many occasions, the mercurial Banerjee had opposed the oil price hike and had even threatened to quit the government if the prices are not rates were not rolled back. |

For Americans Cricket is only India Pakistan Match Posted: 24 Jul 2012 02:30 AM PDT Americans don’t understand cricket, but they like it, particularly of the diplomatic variety between friend India and ally Pakistan. “We’re for cricket. We don’t understand it, but we like it,” State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters amid laughter Monday when asked to comment on resumption of India-Pakistan cricketing ties. “We share the interest of people in India, (and) people in Pakistan …in seeing these two countries continuing to improve their relationship,” she said reiterating US support for a continued dialogue between the two South Asian neighbours. Welcoming the “considerable progress on the economic side,” Nuland said, the US “encouraged them to do better on issues like sharing counterterrorism information and dealing with threats to both countries,” but it was up to New Delhi and Islamabad how they move forward. “We have been supportive in all of our diplomatic encounters at every level with the Indian side, with the Pakistani side in some of the progress that they’ve made,” she said. “They’ve made considerable progress on the economic side,” Nuland said. “We are encouraging them to do better on issues like sharing counterterrorism information, dealing with threats to both countries, moving forward to work on trust and political issues.” “So we will continue (to) support dialogue between them at every level, but it’s obviously up to Indians and Pakistanis to continue to work on this,” she said. The issue of dealing with the aftermath of the Mumbai bombings and bringing people to justice, Nuland said, comes up in all of US discussions with Indians and with Pakistanis. “And we’ll continue to advocate for full justice being served, not least because Americans lost their lives as well.” |
