Mumbai Rave Party Accused sigh a major relief Posted: 06 Jul 2012 07:30 PM PDT Mumbai Rave Party Accused have sighed a major relief when Police said that they would face cases only for consumption. A mere consumption of drugs is a bailable offence, as against selling. The special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act court here was hearing anticipatory bail applications of 13 out of the 44 persons who had tested positive for drugs following the police raid at hotel Oakwood in suburban Juhu in May. Police today said that all those who were partying and had taken drugs would be booked only for consumption. However, Disc Jockeys Deepesh Sharma and Rakesh Sharma, and the organizer Suryaprakash Ijangare, were facing conspiracy charges. After noting the police’s reply, the court disposed of the anticipatory bail pleas of those who are accused of only consumption. The order on the anticipatory bail pleas of Sharmas and Ijangare is reserved till tomorrow. Meanwhile, suburban Khar police today arrested a person for selling cocaine, of the same quality as seized in Juhu case. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Bakul Chandelia. Police said they were now probing if Chandelia had anything to do with the Juhu case |
Minimum Stipend of CA Trainees to be increased Threefold Posted: 06 Jul 2012 06:30 PM PDT Institute of Chartered Accountants of India(ICAI) President Jayesh Shah has said that the minimum stipend of CA Aspirants would be increased by 3 times. Talking to newsmen on the sidelines of a conference of CA students, Shah said the amount of stipend varies and depends upon areas fixed by the ICAI like an urban or semi-urban etc. A CA aspirant has to compulsorily undergo three and half years of articleship and get trained at CA firms after clearing first of the two Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC) groups. He said if someone is getting a stipend of Rs 1,000 per month would now get between Rs 2500 and Rs 3,000. He also said that the ICAI has made large investments over the years for different initiatives. Shah claimed that it is still much less costly to do a CA course compared to other professional courses in India. Welcoming the ICAI move to increase the stipend, an office bearer of local chapter of ICAI, M J Parsiya said, “It is a welcome step and will act as morale booster for many as stipend hike will come handy in planning their monthly expenses.” “Stipend amount depends on the population of the city, size of the CA firm and its ability to pay the CA aspirants under articleship,” he said. |
High Court directs Government to file Affidavit in Pinki Pramanik Case Posted: 06 Jul 2012 05:30 PM PDT Calcutta High Court has ordered West Bengal government to file an affidavit within two weeks about the progress of investigations into athlete Pinki Pramanik’s case. It has also been asked to submit the case diary. Pramanik, Asiad gold medallist, has been accused of being a male and is currently under judicial custody for alleged rape. A host of sportspersons alo organised a protest meeting at the Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club over alleged ill-treatment of Pinki. The court passed the order while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) on the alleged violation of Pramanik’s human rights. “The bench of Chief Justice J.N. Patel and Justice Sambuddha Chakrabarti has directed the state government to file an affidavit within two weeks giving its stand on the case as well as the progress of investigation. The case diary has also been asked to be submitted,” R.S. Chattopadhyay, who filed the PIL, told IANS. Filed on behalf of Bharati Mutsuddi, a former member of the West Bengal Commission for Women, the PIL called the detention of Pramanik illegal and sought the athlete’s release. Regarding an MMS allegedly showing the athlete in the nude and which has gone viral online, the court said police’s cyber cell would investigate the case if the athlete filed a complaint. The West Bengal Human Rights Commission Tuesday, expressing serious concerns, ordered a probe into the allegations of human rights violations of the athlete and sought a report within a week from police and the home secretary. Pramanik was arrested June 14 after her live-in partner, a divorcee and a mother of one, lodged a police complaint accusing the athlete of being a man who had been repeatedly raping and torturing her. The treatment meted out to the athlete who has often been escorted by male police officers attracted severe criticism from all quarters, including the sporting fraternity. A host of sportspersons organised a protest meeting at the Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club decrying the treatment meted out to Pramanik and demanded the athlete’s release. Asian Games gold medalist athlete Jyotirmoyee Sikdar said it was not the way to treat a woman who had done the country proud by winning international medals. Swimmer Bula Chowdhury called the happenings shameful. “It’s shameful. We must protest. We sportspersons feel humiliated at her harassment and the silence of the administration,” she said. Former footballer and Arjuna awardee Shanti Mullick said it was surprising that the woman who had lodged the complaint had not been interrogated by police |

Supreme Court fines petitioner for filing PIL against Pranab Mukherjee Posted: 06 Jul 2012 03:30 PM PDT Supreme Court of India yesterday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking directions to the central government to conduct an inquiry against presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee for canvassing even before resigning as the union finance minister. An apex court bench of Justice Aftab Alam and Justice H.L. Gokhale dismissed the PIL by advocate Manohar Lal Sharma and very nearly imposed a cost of Rs.50,000 on him. Describing the petition as “fantastic and unacceptable”, Justice Alam observed: “This (court) is not a theatre for your farcical play.” “This time we spare you,” the court said, letting off Sharma with a warning after he pleaded against the imposition of the cost. The petitioner sought a direction to the government to “conduct enquiry against presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, for securing favour/support of various MLAs/MPs for his presidential election while still holding the office of the finance minister”. Sharma contended that Mukherjee was not supposed to start canvassing for support from the time he was named a candidate but he did so while he was still the finance minister. The court said that if a person was a candidate, then he was supposed to approach MPs and legislators for seeking their support. The court described as “most fantastic interpretation of the provision (Section 7) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988″, when the petitioner advocate said that corruption, either a small favour or a large, had the same effect under the law. Sharma contended that the “misuse of public office for a self-benefit by a public servant is a criminal misconduct and corruption which is liable to be punished under the Prevention of Corruption Act”. He alleged that Mukherjee used the finance ministry facilities to canvass support for his candidature for the July 19 presidential election. Trashing the petition, the court imposed a cost of Rs.50,000 on him – which it subsequently withdrew with a warning that a repeat of such a farcical PIL in future would invite heavy cost. As Sharma pleaded before the court that the cost would destroy him, Justice Alam told him that he was destroying the system. “You are destroying the system. This time we spare you,” the court said, withdrawing the cost of Rs.50,000. Right in the beginning, the court asked Sharma if he was seriously pursuing his petition and cautioned him of the consequences. “Mr. Sharma, are you seriously pursuing this application? We are cautioning you,” the court said. |

Govt to extend full help in treatment of African National Yannick Nihangaza Posted: 06 Jul 2012 01:30 PM PDT India Friday assured Burundi’s ambassador of all possible assistance for a 23-year-old student from the east African country lying in coma after being beaten up in Jalandhar in Punjab in April. The ambassador met Secretary (West) in India’s External Affairs Ministry M. Ganapathi and took up the case of Yannick Nihangaza. Ganapathi assured the envoy that India would do everything possible to provide assistance, said official sources in New Delhi. The ministry also said it had written to the Punjab government about the case, said sources. Meanwhile, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal Friday told the police to arrest all people involved in attacking Nihangaza. Badal also told Punjab Chief Secretary Rakesh Singh to get in touch with Nestor Ntibateganya, the youth’s father, to know his requirements and extend all possible medical and financial help. Talking to the media in Jalandhar city, 150 km from here, Badal said he had also directed the Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Gaurav Yadav “to expedite the hunt for remaining accused in the case and spare no guilty in the case, whosoever he may be”. Yannick suffered irreversible brain damage after he was mercilessly beaten and stoned by some youths in Jalandhar April 21. Chances of his recovery are remote, say doctors. Yannick, who is pursuing a B.Sc. degree in computers from Lovely Professional University near Jalandhar, was beaten up after an argument with some youth outside a liquor shop close to his rented accommodation, police said. He was rushed to hospital by passers-by. His father, who arrived in India April 29 after being told about his son’s condition, brought him to Patiala, 80 km from here, for treatment at the Columbia Asia Hospital. Yadav told Badal that Jalandhar police had arrested two of the accused and filed a chargesheet against them but the three other accused were absconding. An eyewitness had told the police the registration number of the vehicle used by the attackers, following which Bunny Ralhan and Sahildeep were arrested. Yannick’s father has pleaded to the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for help. He has written two letters to the chief minister seeking justice and financial help for his son’s treatment and taking him back to Burundi. “I have written two letters to the Punjab chief minister seeking help for my son. I want justice for him. Perpetrators should be arrested and punished. I am yet to get any response to my plea,” Ntibateganya told IANS outside the hospital where his son is admitted. “In a country that I believe to be a civilised one… I have been deeply troubled by the fact that the people who stoned my innocent son and left him for dead, are still free,” Ntibateganya wrote in the letter to Badal. He alleged that police failed to take action against the attackers as they belonged to influential families. The victim’s father is also worried that the private hospital where Yannick is admitted will hand over a hefty bill to him. “I want to take him back to my country. I request that I be helped to take him back and also be given the cost of his treatment,” Ntibateganya said. |

She was manhandled by Police and did lose her Job too. Born in a poor family at Purulia West Bengal, Pinki reached the peak of her career when she won a 4x400m relay gold in the 2006 Doha Asiad and a silver in the same event at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Pinki bagged three gold medals in the 2006 SAF Games in Colombo when she won the 400m, 800m and 4x400m relay events. Below we present several untold truth, on how she has been molested by Police and Media. Because of her sexual ambiguity and possibly transgender identity, Pinki is being continually humiliated. As long as she is not proved as a male, she must have been given the respect a female gets. 1. A 29 Second MMS has leaked online which shows her naked, undergoing a gender determination at a government hospital. She had to undergo 3 separate MEdical Tests in different Hospitals to determine her Sex, but she doctors failed to decide her Sex. Apparentely she doesnot have Male Genital Organs hence she cannot be termed a Male. 2. Male Police arrested and took her into jail. Photographs of the policemen taking her to jail show her being groped by one of them. She has been jailed along with other Men in the Prison. However, she has a separate cell. She doesn't need to walk out to the go to the bathroom; she has that in her cell. That has been taken care of. 3. Inspite of of Three Medical Tests, Doctors Failed to prove her as Male because they didnot have required Facilities. 4. People are wondering why she hasnot been granted Bail even after 20 Days of her Arrest. if it was any other man who would have charged with anything like this, he would have got a bail by now. But it is sensationalising, the fun that the police and the official associated with this are deriving from this issue, that sort of make them carry on. 5. She is from a very poor family, she is from a very poor village in Purulia, she has no well connected friends, she has sexually ambiguous identity, she is seen as the fair game by the police and shocking by the media 6. "I have never been subjected to such humiliation and harassment in my life," said Pinki after she had to come yet again to the government run SSKM Hospital to give blood samples for a chromosomal test. |
