They are charged with siphoning off the whopping MNREGA funds by withdrawing the money through forged passbooks in the post office, police said.

Supertstar Amitabh Bachchan relieved from Hospital

Posted: 24 Feb 2012 03:47 AM PST

amitabhSuperstar Amitabh Bachchan, who returned home after a 12-day stay in hospital following his abdominal surgery, says he is happy to be back in familiar surroundings. The 69-year-old actor was discharged from the Seven Hills hospital last night.

“Home….Just discharged from hospital and am back home in familiar surroundings, gently taking in all that now engulfs me. The surgery discomfort and soreness persists, but will take a while to finally erase itself from the pain glands, but in all, apart from a sluggish movement, Gods grace and prayers of the Ef have put me back on track again. My most gracious thanks to all,” Bachchan wrote on his blog. “The staff had a satisfied look on their faces as a small traditional welcome is executed. As you stand by the entrance oil is poured out, water thrown down, the small ‘arti’ and the ‘tika’ and you step in to the house. Of course the first stop is at ‘Prateeksha’ and a small prayer at the temple, built by my Father before moving on,” he added.

The actor also said that the staff at the hospital bade him adieu with smile on their faces. “The staff and the nurses at 7 Hills were all smiles and expressed sadness that I was leaving, which was rather sweet of them. They would miss me they said, but hoped I would never have to come back again in adverse circumstances,” he said.

She paints using bear instead of colors

Can someone pain using Beer? American artist Karen Eland is an exception, she paints using Beer instead of colors. As reported in the Telegraph, she has made several artistic drawings using her Beer Painting.

She says: “I use stouts and porters to create the paintings, with sometimes lagers or lighter beers to do the light areas. Sometimes I like the beer to evaporate awhile, condensing the colour. I use watercolour paper; the beer is too liquid-y to work on canvas unless I add a painting medium. Depending on the level of detail, a medium size beer painting takes about 2 days to complete. Lots of gradual layers are built up to create the final painting.”

Citigroup sells its ownership in HDFC

Posted: 24 Feb 2012 12:52 AM PST

citi groupCitigroup Inc, the owner of World’s largest Merchant Banking Enterprise has opted out of the ownership of HDFC (Housing Development Finance Corporation) making it largest share sell in Indian Market this year.. Its stake in HDFC was valued to be $1.9 billion.

The bank sold 145.3 million HDFC shares at 657.56 rupees each. The price represents a discount of about 6 percent to HDFCs closing price on Thursday, when Citi launched the process to sell its HDFC stake. Sources had said the bank had invited bids of between 630 rupees and 703.55 rupees a share. The shares were bought by a large number of global funds as well as some local financial institutions, sources with direct knowledge of the process said. Citi was the sole bookrunner, they said.

This follows a similar disinvestment by international investors including U.S. private equity firm Carlyle and Singapore state investor Temasek in recent weeks. The sales have coincided with a sharp rise in the share prices of Indian financial companies, which would be among the main beneficiaries of expected interest rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India later in the year.

The BSE Sensex has risen about 16 percent so far this year. The sale of the HDFC stake is ‘ongoing capital planning efforts,’ Citi said in a statement. The deal puts Citi at the top of Indias equity capital market league table, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Home Ministry opposes Gay Sex in Supreme Court

Posted: 24 Feb 2012 12:40 AM PST

Indian Government has apparently opposed the move to decriminalize the gay sex. In a Supreme Court hearing, the Home Ministry said that , “Our moral and social values are different from other countries and we cannot be guided by them”.

The Delhi High Court has earlier (in 2009) ruled that homosexual sex among consenting adults is not a crime boosted an increasingly vocal pro-gay lobby in India but was criticised by conservative groups. The Supreme Court began hearing petitions filed against the 2009 ruling on Wednesday.

Homosexuals and lesbians face ostracism across much of India, and only in recent years have some come out, especially in cities. Gay rights activists argue the colonial-era law was an impediment in fighting against HIV/AIDS because many homosexuals refuse to come out in the open fearing harassment by authorities. In 2010, a professor was suspended from his university in Aligarh after having been secretly filmed having sex with another man. He was later found dead at his home in an apparent suicide.

Patna Marathon postponed

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 10:55 PM PST

In  a major setback to the  whole Bihar and the gang of Runners from 24 countries, the first episode of Patna Marathon which was scheduled to take place this Sunday (February 26),  has been postponed.  Any possible timeline or  new date for the  Marathon has not been declared . A message apoloziging the runners has been posted on the Official Facebook Page of the Patna Marathon

Patna Marathon Postponement note on Facebook

Organizers quote that several examinations (few entrance exams and Class 10 board exams ) fo r over 1.5 Lakh candidates has been suddenly scheduled at various centers of Patna on the same day and controlling the traffic along with the running marathon squad would be very difficult. But, it seems that couple of other reasons also might have contributed to this postponement. There was lack of synergy between District Administration and the Organizing Team, where Administration apprently failed to recognize the importance of such a mega event in Bihar.

Organizers on their part worked hard to make it a grand success. Few days back a video for the theme song was also released. However, it was reported that they have been facing  crunch of  funds as several sponsorship talks failed.  They have also started  refunding  the Registration Fee to all participants

This marathon was originally supposed to take place on October 29 last year. Since then it was postponed thrice  leading to Feb 26.

Such abrupt cancellation/postponement might affect the image of Bihar outside,  because participants from around 24 countries very expected to run in the Marathon.  It would also affect the branding of resurgent Bihar as the indications of Jungle Raj do pop up sometimes.
