Justice Katju’s letter ignites supporters in Pakistan

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 05:45 PM PDT

Justice Markandey Katju’s letter to Pakistan President Asif Jardari  for release of Sarabjit Singh has found supporters across the borders.

Following Katju’s appeal, Senator Syed Faseih Iqbal, a member of Press Council of Pakistan, has also written to Zardari seeking Sarabjit’s release.

Iqbal also wrote a letter to Katju in which he said that he acknowledged Katju’s bold step of making an appeal to Zardari for the release of Sarabjit Singh.

‘The Balochistan Times’, a prominent Pakistani newspaper of which Iqbal is the Editor-in-chief, has also published a special news comment highlighting Katju’s appeal to President Zardari.

“All peace loving people in Pakistan has appreciated your appeal and expressed their support for it. The comment supports your appeal, requesting the President to give it due consideration on humanitarian grounds, suggesting that pardon, if granted, may prove to be a turning point culminating in a full-fledged peace process,” Iqbal wrote to Katju.

The Press Council Chairperson had used the opportunity of Zardari’s recent visit to India to ask for the release of Sarabjit. In a letter addressed to Zardari, Katju had said that his visit to India and Ajmer Sharif had created a climate for good relations between the two countries and Sarabjit’s release could further boost the ties.

US Court sentences Pakistani for 2008 Mumbai attacks

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 04:36 PM PDT

While the trails of Mumbai attacks are pending in India and it has been closed in Pakistan, a US Court in Virginia  has sentenced 24-year-old Pakistani national Jubair Ahmad for aiding LeT for Mumbai attacks in 2008.

Ahmad was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment yesterday for providing material support to LeT by making a propaganda video for the terror group, helping it with recruitment and fundraising.

Based in US for the past few years, Ahmad had himself received two levels of LeT training and was in regular communication with Talha Saeed, the son of the LeT founder Hafiz Saeed.

“For years before his arrest, Ahmad engaged in trade-craft to conceal his activities on behalf of LeT. He used coded language, avoiding talking openly about LeT, and he maintained the lowest possible profile,”  US Attorney Neil H MacBride  said.

Though based in US, the purpose of Ahmad was to incite violence against India in particular Kashmir. Ahmad “advocated violence, almost exclusively against the Indian army in Kashmir.”

According to US attorney, Ahmad received first two levels of paramilitary training from the LeT – Dora Suffa and Dora A’ama. Once he completed the first two levels, Ahmad was interested in the third stage, Dora Khasa or the “advanced course,” but was denied permission as he was too young skinny.

Bal Thackeray praises Nitish Kumar for development in Bihar

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 02:25 PM PDT

Shiv Sena  patriarch  today lauded Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for the developments in Bihar. ”Due to the fabulous leadership Bihar has got in the form of Nitish Kumar, the state, a backward region engulfed in casteism, is on the road to development.”, Bal Thackeray  said in the  party news letter Saamna.

He also took a dig at his estranged nephew MNS President Raj Thackeray for opposing Kumar’s visit here and then back-tracking.

“The role of the “natwarya” (veteran actor) to first oppose and then not to oppose has been exposed. The delicious ‘vada’ (a local snack) has become ‘rabdi’ (a sweet dish),” he said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’. Votebank politics hinges on ‘nautanki’ (drama) and ‘tamasha’, he said, taking potshots at Raj for his flip-flop over Kumar’s visit to Mumbai to take part in Bihar Day celebrations.

“That is why we said we will speak on Bihar Day only after others reveal their stand,” the Sena chief said in an apparent reference to MNS.

Speaking on the issue of Marathi pride, he said no one was more aggressive than Shiv Sena in opposing “atrocities” on Marathi-speakers in Belgaum by the Kannada people. “Shiv Sena’s fist is firm and Mumbai will remain for Marathi-speakers,” he said.

Anger in Bengal over Professor’s arrest

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 10:06 AM PDT

First a ban on certain newspapers and now the arrest of a professor for allegedly circulating a cartoon targeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. People in West Bengal Saturday expressed outrage over the state government’s latest move, with some even wondering if it was “a move towards censorship and partial fascism”.

Venting their anger against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for arresting Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra for allegedly circulating a defamatory cartoon, majority of intellectuals and a cross-section of commoners Saturday said they are “scared” by the trend the state government has set.

Mahapatra, a professor of physical chemistry, in his 50s, later claimed he had sent the mail for “pure fun” to his friends.

Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay, a noted writer, termed the incident as “unfortunate”.

“We feel pain when we see such incidents. We feel scared and terrified,” said Mukhopadhyay.

This is not the first time that Banerjee has drawn the ire of the intellectuals and the citizens of the state. Last month, the state government was severely criticised after it passed an order to state-funded libraries to stock only specific eight vernacular newspapers for promoting “free thinking” among readers.

“Whether it’s a ban on newspapers or arrest of a professor of Jadavpur University for circulating cartoons, I personally feel both the decisions were politically incorrect,” said Bhibas Chakrabarty, theatre personality.

Noted writer Sunil Gangopadhya, too, criticised the arrest.

“I don’t believe in commenting on each and every issue. But when such kind of incidents happen how can I keep my mouth shut? This incident is unacceptable,” he said.

The common people, however, not only criticised the incident but also felt that the chain of developments was a prelude to a “fascist regime”.

“What is she trying to do? Is she trying to throttle each and every voice of protest? In democracy such things are unacceptable,” said Ramesh Ray, a software engineer.

“This is nothing but a move towards censorship and partial fascism. If she tries to move on the same path the people of the state will not forgive her,” said Rashmita Dutta, a student.

However, some intellectuals supported the professor’s arrest.

“The material which was circulated was not a cartoon. It was a photograph of three individuals which was used to spread malicious and slanderous campaign. I support the arrest,” said noted painter Shuvaprasana.

“I won’t comment on the technicalities of the issue, but I personally feel that Mamata should be given more time so that she can perform,” said Jogen Chowdhury, another famed painter.

Detaining Sharukh was not a pattern says Washington

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 06:24 AM PDT

Sharukh in don 2Caught on the wrong foot over the detaining of Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan at a US airport twice, Washington has asserted it was not a case of racial profiling or a pattern.

Suggesting that Khan was not “detained”, but “simply delayed”, State Department spokesperson Mark Toner told reporters Friday: “I wouldn’t necessarily look at this as some sort of pattern but rather two separate incidents.”

“Obviously, we’ve expressed our regret about the incident and recognize that he’s a very renowned artist and humanitarian,” he said.

Toner also sought to paint the detaining of Khan at New York’s White Plains airport Thursday when he arrived to receive the prestigious Chubb fellow award at Yale University as a “delay”, saying “he was temporarily delayed before admission” to the US.

However, he dismissed the suggestion that it was racial profiling. “I mean, I think we all know that that’s clearly not the case. The fact of the matter is tens of thousands of Muslims travel to and from the United States every day and are not detained or delayed.”

The spokesperson was hard put to explain the “reasons for delay” acknowledging that only Khan was not allowed to disembark from the plane when he arrived on a private jet with Nita Ambani, wife of Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani.

Both the Indian Ministry of External Affairs as well as the Indian Embassy in Washington have expressed their concern over Khan’s detention for the second time in less than three years, he said.

In August 2009 too, Khan was detained at New Jersey’s Newark airport.

Toner also suggested that to avoid such incidents “travellers can alert – identify their status before they depart via the embassy. And that’s one approach or avenue to take.”

Meanwhile, Yale University also sought to play down the incident. “As SRK himself would tell you, what is most important in his movies is how they end rather than how they begin,” Assistant Secretary George Joseph stated.

“And yesterday, things began in an unfortunate manner, but ended in a way that left everyone happy.”

NASA to formulate plans for Mars landing by August 2012

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 05:22 AM PDT

NASA will compile the Mars research plan for next 20 years by August, the US space agency officials have said.

According to NASA, the programme would be reformulated to reflect the space agency’s “high-priority science goals” and President Barack Obama’s challenge of sending a manned space mission to the Red Planet in the 2030s.

“We’re moving quickly to develop options for future Mars exploration missions and pathways,” said John Grunsfeld, an astrophysicist, five-time space shuttle astronaut and associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s headquarters in Washington.

In late February, former veteran NASA programme manager Orlando Figueroa was appointed to lead a newly established Mars Program Planning Group (MPPG) tasked to reformulate the agency’s Mars Exploration Programme.

In March, the group laid the framework of the future plan and possible Mars research tasks.

After the US administration cut financing for NASA’s Mars programme, the MPPG announced it was seeking the help of researchers around the world, asking them to submit ideas about how to study Mars on a limited budget.

“As part of this process, community involvement, including international, is essential for charting the new agency-wide strategy for our future Mars exploration efforts,” Grunsfeld added.

NASA also had to announce its withdrawal from the European-led ExoMars mission due to budget cuts.

Pakistani Designers flaunting in Indian Fashion Market

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 04:20 AM PDT

Fashion may be getting bolder in Pakistan with Western trends and cuts dominating the ramp, but it is traditional ethnic apparel that its designers are flaunting at the ongoing Pakistan Lifestyle Expo in the Indian capital.

“Pakistani fashion is undoubtedly experimenting a lot nowadays. But for the Lifestyle Expo, we deliberately chose to go for traditional clothes because we wanted to show our designs in the purest form,” Ayesha Ahmed Mansoor of the label Mausummery Lawn told IANS.

“Pakistan is known for its embroideries and surface texturisation and this will only look best on ethnic garments. We wanted India to see our best designs and remember it for days to come,” added the designer who is participating in the four-day event that started Thursday at the Pragati Maidan fairgrounds.

At the Pakistan Lifestyle Epo, 100 lifestyle companies and designers from across the border are participating.

Top Pakistani brands – Gul Ahmed, AlKaram, Hub Leather, Khaadi, Chen One – and designers Sahar Atif, Deepak Perwani, Kamiar Rokni, Faiza Samee, Maheen Khan and Rizwan Beyg are showcasing their collection, a mix of salwar-suits, palazzos, kurtis and accessories.

The price starts from Rs.950 and goes up to Rs.80,000.

For Asad Sajjad, managing director, Textile Links, Pakistani culture is still rooted in tradition.

“For us, the tradition is restricted to salwar-kameez. Yes, pants and shirts are worn as daily wear in both the countries, but for us, the real garment is traditional clothes,” Sajjad told IANS.

“In Pakistan, women wear salwar kameez because they are more comfortable in it and the designers also get a chance to play a lot with it. Our sequins, embroideries, handwork, motifs are flaunted more in traditional attire.”

Some designers say fashion-conscious women across the border are more on the heavier side and that is why Western garments are not so popular.

“We (Pakistani women) are more on the heavier side and this leaves little scope to experiment with different cuts. Western designs can only work best when a girl is blessed with an hourglass figure. Yes, we are blessed with beautiful faces and we can happily flaunt that,” said designer Noureen Khan.

“Pakistani designers are capable of making any kind of design, but when we are participating in an event in India, we have to bring our best designs. It’s not that all our clothes are traditional. If you know how to mix-n-match things, a simple suit can also look Western,” she added.

They have succeeded in wowing people with their innovative cuts and designs, with their clothes selling like hot cakes. On the first day itself, many stalls were sold out.

Fans however say a couple of Western silhouettes would have been appreciated.

Pernia Raizada, a fashion enthusiast, has come all the way from Mumbai to shop for Pakistani clothes. She said: “The designs are so refreshing that I want to buy all of them, but if that be the case, I will end up buying all the traditional attires.

“I wish there were a few Western designs in Pakistani fabric, especially in lawn (a fabric),” said Raizada.

Hema Rajpurani, 55, too raved about the cuts and designs on display, but she said some Western outfits would have wooed younger women.

“Pakistani design has its own aura and elegance that is irreplaceable. I am amazed to see no Western designs in any stall. Traditional attires are good for middle-aged women like us, but my young daughter wanted to buy a gown in Pakistani fabric, which unfortunately didn’t happen. She ended up buying an anarkali suit,” she said.

But it has not affected business.

Zeba Husain, director, Ensemble Pakistan, said: “Thursday was the first day and we were completely sold out. I loved the way Indian people welcomed us. Looking at the response, I am planning to participate in the Indian fashion week.”
