Nitish Kumar defies MNS threat to travel Mumbai

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 11:11 AM PDT

Bihar CM  Nitish Kumar  said that he would attend Bihar Diwas Celebrations in Mumbai despite threat from MNS of disrupting the event. He further said that he did not require a “visa” to travel there.

”There is no hurdle for me to go there. Can go to any part of the country, don’t need any type of visa for that. I am going,” Kumar said when asked for his comments on the threat by the Raj Thackeray-headed Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to block the celebrations.

He said he would give his message to people from Bihar living in Mumbai on April 15 during his scheduled visit to attend a social and cultural programme organised by migrant labour from the state to celebrate the centenary of the creation of the state “I will give my message there,” he said.

The MNS did not appear to take kindly to Kumar’s assertion. “Raj saheb will make the party’s stance on the issue clear at a public meeting at Malegaon on April 12,” a senior MNS leader said, adding that Kumar’s statement had not gone down well with the party.

“Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra. If anybody tries to show Maharashtra’s culture and Marathi language in a bad light, it will not be tolerated,” he said. Though no one from MNS has formally announced that the celebrations will not be allowed, media reports spoke of a move by the party in this regard.

Airtel to launch India’s 1st 4G Telecom Services

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 07:23 AM PDT

Bharati Airtel is planning to launch India’s first 4G Technology Services. It will be inaugurated by Communications Minister  Kapil Sibal in Kolkata on Tuesday.

“We are expecting Communications Minister Kapil Sibal tomorrow,” a senior company executive said.

A successor to the 3G and 2G families, 4G is expected to be five times quicker than 3G services. It would offer services such as high-definition mobile TV and video conferencing.

Airtel has selected Chinese telecom equipment maker ZTE to manage its services in Kolkata.

The firm bagged BWA spectrum in four circles — Kolkata, Maharastra, Punjab and Karnataka — for Rs.3,314.36 crore in 2010 along with other players including Reliance Infotel (earlier known as Infotel Broadband Services), Qualcomm, Tikona, Aircel and Augere.

While Infotel became the only player to win a pan-India licence, Qualcomm bagged licences in four circles, Tikona in five circles, Aircel in eight circles and Augere in one circle.

The auction fetched the exchequer over Rs.38,500 crore.

With this launch Airtel will become the first player to launch the 4G service in India. The company said that launch of the service in other circles will happen soon.

The other players are yet to announce plans to roll-out 4G services.

Women prefer low income men as Husband

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 05:33 AM PDT

Indian Bridal GirlWoman do not prefer marrying high-income men. In fact a study carried out in Britain has revealed that they prefer middle class or lesser income people compared to rich-class people.

Today’s brides are more likely to ‘marry down’ than to choose a husband with more wealth and social standing than they have, the Daily Mail reported citing the report.

The report by the Institute for Public Policy Research, analysing how women’s aspirations have changed, showed a marked shift in marriage patterns over the past 40 years – driven in part by women’s advances in the workplace.

According to statistics released last week, 52 percent of women aged 17-30 went into higher education, compared to 42 percent of men and their higher qualifications are gradually making a difference to their pay packets.

As a result, an increasing number of women have the economic means to marry someone who earns less than they do.

The current marital landscape is radically different from that which prevailed after the Second World War, when women tended to marry men who were both older and from a higher social class.

The IPPR studied women born in 1958, 1970 and between 1976 and 1981, and found both a drop in the number ‘marrying up’, and a small increase in those ‘marrying down’. The largest increase was seen in the number of marrying within their own social class.

Dropping Fuel prices becomes a headache for Goa

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 12:28 AM PDT

When the whole Country has been burning with the heat of increasing fuel prices and the fear of further increase, Goa came up with a major relief for its residents when it reduced the fuel prices by Rs 7 /litre.

But, the same act of philanthropy has become an headache for Goa Government as it boosted the smuggling of Oil away from the state. Smugglers easily purchase heavy quantity of oil  ans sell it in the neighboring state of Maharashtra at a heavy margin of Rs 7.

Goa will soon start monitoring petrol pumps located on its borders to deter “petrol smugglers” from spiriting away hundreds of litres of cheap petrol, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Monday said.

A mechanism is being worked out to ensure that the smugglers do not take undue advantage of Goa’s cheap petrol, which at Rs.55 (approx) is priced as the lowest in the country, Parrikar said.

“We are collecting data from these border pumps on a daily basis. We are also working on a concrete mechanism to ensure that people do not take undue advantage of these rates,” Parrikar said.

Goa’s cheap petrol has become a top draw for tourists coming to Goa from Maharashtra and Karnataka. A day after the prices were lowered April 2, petrol pumps witnessed queues from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with eager consumers, including those driving cars with outstation numbers, waiting to tank up.

“If people are visiting Goa and are then going back with their tanks full, there is certainly no problem there, but the other kind of visitor who comes only to buy cheap petrol and bootleg it back to his home state for sale, that will be discouraged,” Parrikar said, adding selling petrol in cans had already been banned in Goa.

In his budget tabled in March, Parrikar had reduced the value added tax, as per a promise in his election manifesto, which reduced petrol prices by Rs.11. The promise was one of the biggest “game changers” in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s poll campaign.

The reduction of petrol price has provided major relief to a large section of the 14 lakh odd population in Goa, which has one two wheeler for every three resident citizens. As of 2011, the state had 5.33 lakh two wheelers.

Pune Warriors trash Punjab by 22 runs

Posted: 08 Apr 2012 11:44 PM PDT

Pune Warriors TeamPune Warriors recorded their second successive victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) beating Kings XI Punjab convincingly by 22 runs at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium here Sunday.

Electing to bat at the packed Sahara Stadium, Pune Warriors scored an impressive 166 for six in 20 overs. Punjab managed only 144 for eight in their 20 overs.

Pune Warrior’s bowlers for the second time in the competition put in a good all round performance as all bowlers barring Murali Kartik got their names in the wickets column. Leg-spinner Rahul Sharma was the pick of the bowlers bagging two for 34.

But the star of the show was West Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels (46), who along with Robin Uthappa (40) brought back Pune Warriors to track with their 81-run stand after a slow start. Australian Steven Smith came up with a cameo of 12-ball 25.

The Warriors lost two wickets in quick succession after a cautious start. Captain Sourav Ganguly (20) was the first to go, caught at mid-off while opening partner Jesse Ryder (8) got run out in a silly mix up with Samuels.

The big-hitting West Indian then forged a crucial partnership with Robin Uthappa (40) to take the total to 113 for two before falling victim to Harmeet Singh’s slower ball.

Good bowling by Harmeet and James Faulkner stemmed the run flow. Australian import Callum Ferguson (3) in trying to break the shackles, lobbed an easy catch to Harmeet off his own bowling.

Uthappa lost his middle stump to become Harmeet’s third victim. Turning point of the match came soon after Harmeet Singh’s good spell was cut short by the umpire for bowling two successive beamers.

Smith (25) and Manish Pandey (12 not out) took full advantage as they smashed Bipul Sharma, the man replacing Singh, for three sixes as 27 runs came off the penultimate over.

Smith hit Faulkner another six the next over to take the score to 166 before being castled by his compatriot.

Punjab had themselves to blame for the loss as both openers Adam Gilchrist (6) and Paul Valthaty (1) got run out with the score on nine.

Mandeep Singh (24) and Abhishek Nayar (24) tried to mend the innings with a 41-run partnership. But Singh’s innings ended prematurely, falling prey to Ryder.

Nayar was the next to go as a string of wickets followed. David Hussey (18), Piyush Chawla (16) and Dimitri Mascarenhas (5) all failed to impress as Punjab slumped to 106 for seven.

Some lusty blows towards the end by Bipul Sharma (35 not out) only delayed the inevitable as Punjab fell to their second straight loss in the tournament.
