| Bihar brings law to prevent neglect of old aged people Posted: 21 Sep 2011 02:51 AM PDT Bihar Government is all set to incorporate a path-breaking law which would safeguard the welfare of senior citizens.Usually neglected by children and relatives,now old-people can breathe a sigh of relief. A new law is coming with a provision of up to three months in jail and a fine of Rs 5000 if someone is found guilty of neglecting parents. The state government has decided to implement a new law to protect the rights of senior citizens. The Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act also looks out for the needs of those who don’t have children. In their cases, legal heirs are responsible for maintenance which includes food, clothing, housing and medical expenses. The government will also open an old-age home in every district headquarter that will be able to accommodate 150 senior citizens. Preference will be given to those below the poverty line or to seniors who have no children or legal heirs to look after them |
