CBSE declares results for Class 10 Examination Posted: 21 May 2012 02:20 PM PDT Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared the results of All India Secondary School Examination (AISSE 2012) for Class 10th. The results for Chennai regio has only been declared, while for other regions will be declared in next 2 days. The overall Pass percentage is 99.66 this year. Most city schools secured 100 per cent results in the CBSE Class X exams, which were announced on Monday evening. Out of 1,52,024 students who appeared for the examination, a total of 1,51,509 have qualified for admission to higher classes under the new continuous comprehensive evaluation (CCE) system, an official release said here. With the CBSE making board exam optional, only 97,259 students had registered for the board exam with others opting for school-based test, CBSE Regional Officer D T Sudharsan Rao said. Under the CCE, the performance is assessed encompassing students’ achievements in scholastic as well as co-scholastic areas. The overall performance is reflected in individual subjects in the form of grades instead of marks. A total of 432 students, who finished in the rock-bottom grades of E1 and E2, are put under the category EIOP (Eligible for Improvement of Performance) and can appear for improvement of their performance as per board rules, it said. |
Devdas ranked among Top 10 of Millennium as per Time Magazine Posted: 21 May 2012 05:01 AM PDT Time magazine has ranked Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 film “Devdas” eighth among the ten greatest movies of the millennium with “WALL.E” at the top and “The Artist” in the tenth spot. It described Shah Rukh Khan as an “all-world charismatist” and Madhuri Dixit a “a hot number who danced flamencos on men’s libidos”. “A year after ‘Moulin Rouge!’ had its world premiere at Cannes, another visually intoxicating musical opened at the festival, introducing sang-and-danced Bollywood dramas to the international culturati,” it said of the film starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit “Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1901 novel inspired at least a half-dozen film versions before this one – in its time, the priciest movie in Indian history (at about $10.6 million),” the prestigious US news magazine noted. Time describes Shah Rukh Khan as an “all-world charismatist” and Madhuri Dixit, as “a hot number who had danced flamenco on men’s libidos for a decade or so before appearing in this worldly-wise role” of a prostitute. “The piece is played with such commitment that the tritest plot twists seem worth believing – and dancing to, in nine nifty production numbers. But the fervid emotion is what makes the thing sing,” it said. “Beyond that, Devdas is a visual ravishment, with sumptuous sets, fabulous frocks and beautiful people to fill them; it has a grandeur the old Hollywood moguls would have loved,” Time gushes. “From Toy Story in 1995 to Toy Story 3 in 2010, John Lasseter’s Pixar animation house produced 11 features, all winners – and a few the very best films of their year,” the Time said picking “the studio’s biggest hit” Andrew Stanton’s “WALL.E” for the top spot. The top ten films made since the year 2000: 1. WALL.E, 2008 |
160 year Old Hindu Temple Vandalised in Pakistan Posted: 21 May 2012 04:25 AM PDT Unidentified men in Pakistan have vandalised a historic Hindu temple in Peshawar city of northwest Pakistan that was reopened on the orders of a court last year, police officials and local residents said. The attackers burnt pictures and damaged a shivling inside Gorakhnath Temple and took away idols from the shrine located within an archaeological complex in Gor Gathri area, leaders of the Hindu community said. The shrine's custodian told the media that this was the third attack on the temple in the past two months. Police officers visited the temple to probe the incident. Hindu leaders urged police to put in place better security measures to prevent such incidents. The temple’s custodian told police that he had seen a group of eight men inside the temple when he arrived there at 6.30 pm. The men started burning pictures and holy books before fleeing with some idols, he said. Members of the minority Hindu community rushed to the temple. Footage on television showed burnt papers and utensils lying strewn on the floor of the temple. The 160-year-old temple was reopened for Hindus last year on the orders of the Peshawar High Court. It has been closed since Partition. The temple was reopened after Phool Wati, the daughter of the shrine’s cleric, petitioned the High Court. |
Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit praises Bihar for its Contribution to Delhi Posted: 21 May 2012 03:17 AM PDT Sheila Dikshit After courting controversy over her comments on migrants earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today praised the contribution of people from Bihar in the building of the national capital. Stressing the need to dispel misconceptions about Bihar, Dikshit said the state has given great political and spiritual leaders to the world. “There are misconceptions about Bihar in Delhi but let me say that the state has given personalities like Chanakya, Ashoka and Buddha who have significance not only in India but also in the world. “Delhi has been made on the shoulders of people who have come here from Bihar“, she said at a function to felicitate personalities who have contributed to Maithili culture and language organised by Akhil Bhartiya Maithili Sangh. She also floored the audience by beginning her speech in halting Maithili, the language spoken in some parts of Bihar and Jharkhand. “Ahan sab thik chae” (Is everyone good here?),” she said to loud cheers from the audience. “I didn’t know Maithili is such a sweet and beautiful language. I can understand the language now and I will certainly try to learn to speak it,” she said. Urging Parliamentarians to speak in their local language, she said that speaking Maithili in Parliament would help in propagating the language. “Had they been speaking in Maithili in Parliament I and others would have become proficient in the language”, she said. She also said the Maithili-Bhojpuri Academy in Delhi is doing good work but it needs more contribution from everyone who speaks the language. “There are many people from Bihar and eastern India in Delhi and that’s why we started the academy but we want all of you to contribute more in spreading the beauty and culture of Maithili-Bhojpuri”, she said. |
Smart Rickshaw mobile app wins Innovation Prize Posted: 21 May 2012 01:45 AM PDT Aadhar Bhalinge from India has won M2Work , a World Bank-sponsored online challenge seeking the best ideas for spurring the job-creation potential of mobile phones “m2Work”, which stands for mobile microwork, aims to expand microwork to the five billion mobile phones in the developing world. Currently, millions of people supplement their income through microwork-small digital tasks they can perform online. Bhalinge convinced the high-level jury of World Bank, Nokia, UKaid, and other private sector representatives of the development impact, novelty, and feasibility of his “Smart Rickshaw Network” to take home the $ 20,000 grand prize. His tool would crowdsource maps at a very low cost in developing nations by employing fleets of rickshaw drivers to feed live traffic updates into a subscription service, according to a World Bank media release. Bhalinge and the five other finalists all received business coaching during the finals. The other finalists’ ideas touched on environmental conservation, access to health care and education, and social publishing. The competition organized by Nokia and infoDev, a World Bank innovation and technology entrepreneurship programme, drew a total of 939 ideas, 96 percent of which came from developing and emerging economies. “The diversity of ideas submitted demonstrates that we are beginning to tap into the potential of combining access to technology in the developing world with innovative ideas to help solve critical development issues,” said Stephanie von Friedeburg, the World Bank Group’s Chief Information Officer and chair of the jury. InfoDev, as part of the World Bank Group, will use its vast network of Mobile Applications Labs (mLabs) and business incubators to help the finalists develop their seed-stage ideas into viable start-ups that can create sustainable jobs, the Bank release said. |

Assocham warns against re-framing of Spectrum by TRAI Posted: 20 May 2012 11:40 PM PDT The telecom regulator’s proposal for an immediate re-farming of spectrum will adversely affect the profits of established service providers, an industry lobby said Saturday. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended re-farming of the entire 800/900 MHz holding at the earliest before the first set of licenses come up for renewal in 2014. Re-farming refers to redistribution of airwaves in the 900-MHz band largely held by incumbents and substituting it with frequencies in the 1,800-MHz band. “The proposed immediate re-farming of spectrum would be detrimental for incumbents like Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Vodafone, MTNL/BSNL, Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices who have considerable share of spectrum in the 900/800 MHz category,” Assocham (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry) said in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Communications Minister Kapil Sibal. “The re-farming is likely to impact profitability owing to an increase in network operating expenditure. It would lead to significant cash outflow due to amount payable for the spectrum at auction discovered price and cost of additional capex and opex for re-alignment of spectrum,” it added. Assocham also said that the operators whose licenses have been cancelled and who have to re-bid may not be able to put together a viable business case with recommended reserve price for spectrum. The TRAI has recommended a reserve price of Rs.3,622 crore for 1 MHz pan-India spectrum, which is around 10 times higher than the price at which 2G licences were allocated in 2008 under then telecom minister A. Raja. The recommendation came in the wake of the Feb 2 Supreme Court order cancelling 122 telecom licences issued in 2008. |

Indian army beefs up Vigilance to prevent Kargil 2 Posted: 20 May 2012 10:38 PM PDT With the snow melting in high mountain passes in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army has stepped up its vigil along the Line of control (LoC) following reports that 500-1,000 militants were waiting to infiltrate, army sources said Sunday. The army has diverted more troops to the LoC, mostly from the counter-insurgency grid, to strengthen its vigil along the borderline that divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan. According to the sources, there were “authentic reports” of the militants’ concentration at the launching pads across the LoC. Their number is around 500 to 1,000, and they are waiting to infiltrate anytime as the snow has started melting in the mountainous passes that serve as a deterrent during winters. The army is taking no chances as the hard effort put in to gain peace in the past nearly one and a half years is “precious for all of us, particularly for the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” a source said. The force has already put up fence, flood-lighting and sensors along the LoC to check infiltration. A sudden spurt was noticed in infiltration bids towards the end of last year, but this year the army has further strengthened its anti-infiltration grid. |
