Airtel reduces its 3G Data Prices by 70 percent Posted: 17 May 2012 05:57 PM PDT Amid speculations of the increase in the Call Tarrif, Airtel, India’s largest cellular Provider made a 70 percent reduction on its 3G Data Tarrif. “Volume based browsing rate on 3G down from 10 paisa per 10kb to 3 paisa per 10kb. This will be applicable for 3G non-pack users with effect from May 17, 2012,” the company said in a statement. The company had won 3G spectrum in 13 out of the 22 telecom circles in a government-led auction in 2010 for over Rs.12,000 crore. The services which were launched across the country last year have failed to pick up so far due to high prices. The company statement said that the new data plan for pre-paid customers would start at Rs.10 for 30 minutes of usage over a one-day validity, Rs.45 for 150 MB data valid for 7 days and will go till Rs.1,500 for 10 GB data valid for 30 days. For post-paid customers, the plans starts at Rs.100 with a 300 MB data and 30 days validity, and goes till Rs.1,500 for 10 GB data valid for 30 days. Airtel has also introduced Smartbytes additional data usage packs for its post-paid mobile customers on 3G, thus becoming the first in the market to offer customers with the choice of subscribing to incremental 3G data usage packs. The Smartbytes additional data usage packs are available in a range of predetermined price options that allow Airtel 3G customers to choose a plan that suits their needs, while avoiding any bill shocks, the statement said. |
Vidya’s Kahaani to be remade in English Tamil and Telugu Posted: 17 May 2012 05:36 PM PDT After garnering a huge response at the box office, Vidya Balan starrer “Kahaani” is likely to be made in English under the Yash Raj Films banner. When asked director Sujoy Ghosh about this development, he said, “The talks are on with them… So we can’t say anything. It is all in initial stage.. We would be happy if it is made in English. It will be great. But if it does not happen then also it is ok.” The 46-year-old director also made it clear that there will be no prequel to the hit Hindi film. “I know people want to see more of Bob Biswas… But we can’t make a prequel particularly only for Bob. His character was small and it will not make a full film,” Sujoy said. The character of Bob Biswas, a contract killer-cum-LIC agent, was appreciated by all. Additionally, the movie will also be remade in Tamil and Telugu by TV production company Endemol India. Known for its television shows like “Bigg Boss” and “Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi”, the production company is set to roll the remakes on floors in September. Both the Tamil and Telugu versions will release in January 2013. The company is currently in talks with some leading southern actors for the lead role in “Kahaani” remake. |
Former Speaker P Sangma enters into the race of Presidential Candidates Posted: 17 May 2012 04:45 PM PDT While Major PArties are Silent over the next Presidential Candidate, regional parties from Orissa and Tamil Nadu have come up with their candidate for the President Post. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Tamil Nadu CM, Jayalalitha proposed the name of former Lok Sabha Speaker P Sangma as the Presidential Candidate.
Sangma’s pitch for a tribal candidate found support first from Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Patnaik and AIADMK’s Jayalalitha, in a move which could see more regional leaders join hands with the two. Sangma is, however, yet to get the support of his own Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The Congress did not react to the BJP-AIADMK move while the BJP said it wanted to see the NCP’s reaction. Sangma is believed to have met BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj to elicit their support. “We will support Sangma. He is the most appropriate candidate for the post,” Patnaik said in Bhubaneswar. Jayalalithaa issued a statement in Chennai backing Sangma, who quit the Congress in 1999 after accusing party president Sonia Gandhi of being a “foreigner”. Jayalalithaa said: “The AIADMK takes pride in supporting the candidature of Sangma.” She said in the past 60 years of the Indian republic, no tribal had held the top post. “Sangma not only belongs to a tribal community but is also eminently qualified to be the president of our great nation.” Both Patnaik, who recently visited Chennai, and Jayalalithaa said they had discussed the issue with one another. Sangma said he was grateful to Patnaik and Jayalalithaa for being “very responsive to our tribal aspiration”. “I appeal to leaders of all other political parties to follow suit and support our cause,” he told NDTV. Sangma insisted that he represented India’s tribal voice, and that tribal MPs from all political parties were with him. Neither the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) nor the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) can get their nominee elected as president on their own strength. The two names doing the rounds as possible Congress candidates are those of Vice President Hamid Ansari and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. Although the Congress has been in talks with the NCP, Trinamool Congress and the DMK and informally even with the Left, it has not made up its mind. The BJP, which does not want to support a Congress candidate, has said it will reveal its preferences only after talking to its allies. Asked about Mukherjee’s prospects, Sangma said: “He is a very highly qualified candidate for any post, even for prime minister. He should become the prime minister.” “But like him, there are so many others who are very qualified and so many others who have occupied the post. But this time the president should be from the tribal community.” Sangma’s entry into the race is likely to provide parties in the UPA an opportunity to bargain hard with the Congress. The presidential election, to elect a successor to Pratibha Patil, is due in July. |
Bihar to introduce Mobile Voting in Urban Elections Posted: 17 May 2012 04:09 PM PDT Bihar will introduce the Facility of Electronic Voting or Mobile Voting from the next Urban Elections. Under this Facility, the mobile phones of the voters will be registered in the voters list. The voters will be informed about their number in the voters list and their polling centres so that they exercise their franchise using their mobile phones. This will make it convenient for voters to exercise their franchise from their homes, and would be a boon to voters residing outside their Hometowns. Sirohi also emphasised on preservation of the voters list in a scientific manner in the backdrop of the apex court direction recently and also to issue identity cards to all eligible voters. A website will be developed to preserve the voter lists and information related to the voters so as to encourage them to exercise their franchise, the SEC said. |

India to import Natural Gas from Turkmenistan through TAPI Pipeline Posted: 17 May 2012 10:20 AM PDT After reducing Oil imports with Iran, India has decided to import Natural Gas from Turkmenistan . Cabinet has approved the purchase through the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline project. The pipeline will transport Caspian Sea natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan into Pakistan and then to India. The cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved the proposal of the ministry of petroleum and natural gas to permit GAIL (India) Ltd. to sign the gas sale and purchase agreement (GSPA) with TurrnenGas, Turkmenistan’s national oil company for the TAPI project. The TAPI project is envisaged to be 1,680-km pipeline (144 km in Turkmenistan, 735 km in Afghanistan and 800 km in Pakistan) with a capacity to carry 90 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCMD) of gas, with 38 MMSCMD each for India and Pakistan and the remaining 14 MMSCMD for Afghanistan. The pipeline is expected to be operational in 2017 and supply gas over a 30 years’ period. Afghanistan and Pakistan have committed to the safety and security of the pipeline through the Inter-Governmental Agreement and the Gas Purchase Framework Agreement signed among the four countries in December 2010. The roots of this project lie in the involvement of international oil compani es in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan beginning of 1990s. As Russia, who controlled all export pipelines of these countries, consistently refusing to allow the use of its pipeline network, these companies needed an independent export route avoiding both Iran and Russia. The pipeline will be 1,420 millimetres (56 in) in diameter with a working pressure of 100 standard atmospheres (10,000 kPa). The cost of the pipeline is estimated cost at US$ 7.6 billion. The project is to be financed by the Asian Development Bank. |
Indian Rupee falls to all time low of Rs 54.6 per Dollar Posted: 17 May 2012 09:02 AM PDT Indian rupee is again delcining in the Global Currency Market. Today, its value fell to an all time low of Rs. 54.60 per dollar. However, the Indian currency closed marginally higher at 54.47 against a dollar — 0.04 percent higher than the previous day close at 54.49. The rupee had hit a record intra-day as well as closing low Wednesday. Analysts said the rupee might soon touch 55 against a dollar due to grim economic outlook and limitation of options left with the central bank to intervene in the market. “Rupee is driving the markets. Traders and investors are keeping close eye on RBI action, though it seems RBI is running out of options,” said Kishor P Ostwal, chairman and managing director of CNI Research Ltd. He said the rupee was heading towards 55 against a dollar which would keep the Indian equity markets on edge. Earlier in the day, the rupee strengthened to 54.20 against a dollar taking cues from rebound in stock markets and RBI intervention. But due to continued risk aversion in the global markets, the rupee slipped to a new low in the late afternoon session. The benchmark Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed 0.25 percent higher at 16,070.48 points after rising to 16,240.18 points level in the intra-day. The wide-based Nifty of the National Stock Exchange closed 0.25 percent higher at 4,870.20 points. “The market is ignoring positive news such as drop in oil prices. If rupee slips, the market has to slip further,” said Ostwal. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken a series of measures in the last few weeks to curb the rupee slide. The RBI has asked banks to sell half of the foreign currencies in their accounts. In a bid to attract money from overseas, the RBI has raised interest ceiling that local banks can offer to overseas Indians in forex accounts. The RBI has opened a direct dollar window for oil companies, which are worst hit because of the weakness in the domestic currency as they have to pay higher money for same import. Now oil companies can buy dollar directly from the RBI instead of going to commercial banks. The central bank had introduced a similar facility in 2008 also. The RBI last week asked exporters to convert at least 50 percent of their foreign exchange holdings in rupee. To curb the slide, the RBI is also believed to have sold dollars through public sector banks. |
Sharukh Khan says he wont apologise to MCA Posted: 17 May 2012 04:45 AM PDT “I won’t deny that I could have said something in a fit of anger, but I will not apologise,” said Shah Rukh Khan Thursday, adding that the security officials from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) manhandled children and that they should say sorry for their rudeness. “I don’t think that my behaviour was incorrect or I did something illegal. I think what I did was correct. They are my kids and I have a responsibility towards them. I will not apologise. They (officials) should apologise to me,” Shah Rukh told reporters here. Co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the Bollywood superstar’s statement came Thursday as he faced a lifetime ban on entering the Wankhede Stadium after he allegedly turned up drunk at the ground and misbehaved with security guards and cricket officials. The incident took place Wednesday night after his Kolkata Knight Riders beat Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League match at the stadium. The 46-year-old allegedly misbehaved and pushed the security guard at the stadium, following which he also abused officials from the MCA when they tried to intervene late Wednesday night.
“He (the official) spoke something in Marathi, something which I can’t even repeat…I said he should not speak to me like this. It is extremely disturbing to see the way they manhandled children. Their behaviour is unpardonable. They were extremely highhanded. I won’t deny that I could have said something in a fit of anger,” he added. Shah Rukh said he possesses good sportsman’s spirit and that he would never ever behave in a bad manner. “We are public figures. We are actors and we will never ever behave rudely,” he insisted. “There was no argument with the cops. They were just trying to control the fight. They said, ‘Aap ghar jao hum dekh lenge’.” A complaint has been registered in Mumbai’s Marine Drive police station by the MCA officials. Assistant Commissioner of Police Iqbal Shaikh said the actor was “smelling” of liquor. Commenting upon that, SRK said: “I was not drunk. I just drink socially. It is an easy way to pick on the celebrities and say things like that they were drunk or were angry.” |
