IIT Fraternity discerned with new Entrance Test Pattern Posted: 31 May 2012 06:11 PM PDT IIT Alumni, Professor and Alumni are not able to digest the changing pattern of the Entrance Test. They fear that the new pattern would erode the autonomy of the elite institutions. “As far as holding the test is concerned, the new format will erode the autonomous status enjoyed by IITs,” said President of Faculty Federation of IIT Delhi, Sanjeev Sanghi, adding they have written a letter to Prime Minister Manmonhan Singh today in this regard. Sanghi also regretted the decision to hold the test under the new format from 2013, saying their plea to hold it from 2014 has been rejected. “This will create a big problem because the IITs will be left with no time to conduct a dry run to assess the new format,” he said. The HRD Ministry had recently announced a new format for the IIT entrance under which the plus two Board results of the candidates will also be taken into consideration. Under the prescribed format, for admission to all centrally-funded institutes, there would be 40 percentage weightage for performance in Class XII (after normalisation of marks), 30 per cent weightage to performance in main and 30 per cent in the advanced test. In case of IITs, there would be a filtering process involved. The Board results and the main test will be given 50 per cent weightage each. Only the top 50,000 students will be selected for the advance test after taking into account their performance in the board results and the main result. President of IIT Delhi Alumni Association (IITDAA) Somnath Bharti said the step diluted the vision of the country's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru about the IITs, and added that the association may go to court to get a stay on the government decision "if required". "This is dilution of the IIT envisioned by Pt. Nehru," said Bharti. "We will have a meeting soon and, if required, we will approach the court," Bharti, who is also a Supreme Court advocate and a former member of IIT Delhi senate, told. A senior professor from IIT Delhi, who did not wish to be named, echoed Bharti's views saying that the procedure has several loop holes. "This pattern cannot stop coaching institutions, because the problem is lack of proper training in school. Students will keep going to coaching centres till the government does something about quality of education in schools," he said. The professor also expressed apprehensions about the step being more political than beneficial to students. |
Petrol may get 150 paise cheaper from Today Posted: 31 May 2012 05:04 PM PDT Petrol prices may be revised tomorrow with companies talking about a scope of cutting rates by Rs 1.50-1.60 a litre. On a day when BJP-led NDA and the Left parties called a Bharat Bandh or a nationwide street protests against petrol price hike, the government appeared in no mood to announce a cut. “To my mind, there will be no revision in rates tonight,” a senior official at one of the three state-run fuel retailers said. Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum had over the past one week indicated of a scope of reducing rates from June 1. The three firms, as per practice, were to revise rates of petrol today based on average international oil price and rupee-US dollar exchange rate in the previous fortnight. With international gasoline rates, against which petrol is benchmarked, falling to USD 114-115 from USD 124 (that was taken into account for the steep Rs 7.54 a litre hike effected from May 24), there existed a scope for reducing prices by Rs 1.50-1.60 a litre. “If they (oil companies) would have reduced rates today, the Opposition would have gone to town claiming that their Bharat Bhandh was successful which forced the government to cut prices,” an industry official said. Sources said the oil companies may take a call tomorrow on the quantum of reduction considering that rupee has depreciated further against the US dollar – from Rs 53.17 to a dollar to Rs 55.30. Rupee depreciation raises cost of imports. Every dollar fall in oil price should translates into a cut in product price by 33 paisa. But every time rupee depreciates against US dollar by Re one, it translates into a requirement to raise prices by 77 paisa. |
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar terms Bharat Bandh as grand Success Posted: 31 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar described the ’Bharat bandh’ called by NDA to protest against petrol price hike, as total success. Demanding the Centre roll back hike in the prices of petrol immediately, Kumar told reporters at Bhagalpur, “The success of the bandh reflected people’s anger against the Centre for its failure to curb price rise.” Kumar, who claimed the shutdown was total, had cancelled all his official programmes in Bhagalpur because of the bandh. Police said that more than 1,000 workers and leaders of the NDA and Left parties have been arrested since the shutdown came into effect. Senior Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader and NDA convenor Sharad Yadav was arrested in Saharsa district along with JD-U MP from Khagaria parliamentary constituency Dinesh Chandra Yadav, while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Shahnawaz Hussain was arrested in Bhagalpur where he was leading protestors. According to police, over a dozen legislators of the JD-U and BJP have been arrested. BJP state president C.P. Thakur claimed that the response to the shutdown was near total in the state. Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (CPI-ML) leader Kunal said that people were supporting the shutdown as they were fed up with hike in fuel prices. Hundreds of workers of the JD-U and the BJP forced shops and commercial establishments to close down for the day in the state. Protestors damaged a number of vehicles in state capital Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga to enforce the shutdown, a police official said. A group of ruling NDA activists also ransacked the Mairwa railway station in Siwan district. At Patna's busy Dak Bungalow crossing, JD-U and CPI-ML workers clashed over burning of an effigy of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. |
Air India employees to be paid less due to on going Strike Posted: 31 May 2012 03:48 PM PDT Air India has suffered lossees to the tunes of Rs 330 Crores in last 25 days of Pilot sstrike and its effect has been negative on the salaries of its other employees. They will draw less in salaries for the month of May on account of the ongoing pilots strike. “May is the peak season for any airline. Generally, our employees production-linked-incentive (PLI) is highest in this season. But due to the strike, May salaries of majority of our employees in the operations side is going to tank,” an Air India official told IANS from Mumbai. According to the official, the employees who are hit hard by the agitation are the cabin crew (CCs), aircraft assistants (AAs), engineers and international operations staff. The official said the employees have not yet received salaries for March and April. The salary for March was supposed to have been given by May 15. “The delay in our two-month old salary is due to the ongoing pilots strike. As under the new arrangement no industrial dispute was supposed to have taken place until the airlines’ financial position stabilises.” Inflight service providers say they have been the hardest hit. “Our CCs and AAs are sitting at home as there is no flight operation taking place. Our flying hours are down which will hurt our May salaries,” a cabin crew in charge (CCI), who manages the inflight services, said. The Air India pilots’ strike continued for the 24th day Thursday, mounting the national carrier’s losses to Rs.340 crore. “We have lost nearly Rs.330 crore on account of ticket cancellation, unused labour and bulk of Boeing 777 fleet being grounded. We expect to stabilise our operations and cut the losses to less than Rs.5 crore a day from June 2,” an Air India official told IANS in New Delhi. |

He has been a great cricketer in both the formats of the game. We have all enjoyed his batting and he had a great impact in this year’s IPL as well. He will be sincerely missed in this years World Twenty20. It is good that he will carry on playing in Test cricket and I wish him luck in his career,” said Dhoni. The India captain also said that he wants to make the best use of the one-and-half month’s break from international cricket. “The break is very important for me. But there are lot of prior commitments. I have to do some work with the ‘Territorial Army’ and ‘Save the Tiger’ campaign. We have been playing without a break for the last four years and now hopefully I can spend some quality time with my family. I may even go for a vacation,” he said. |
Egypt gets Free from Emergency rule after 31 Years Posted: 31 May 2012 01:33 PM PDT Through a declaration, Egypt’s ruling military council Thursday lifted a state of emergency that existed for decades in the country. Egypt’s emergency laws, widely used under the rule of ousted President Hosni Mubarak to silence political opponents, have expired for the first time in 31 years, the country’s ruling military council announced on Thursday. The stifling effect of the laws, implemented after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat in 1981, were one of the key drivers of the uprising that forced Mubarak from power. The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces said in a statement that obliquely mentioned the end of the state of emergency that it would continue to take responsibility for the nation’s security “in deference to the national, political and popular desire”. The military stated that its responsibility would end when power is transferred to civilian rule, a process set to finish when a new president assumes office following a runoff election in June. The announcement caused a wave of anxiety among political circles as the country’s toppled leader Hosni Mubarak’s trial is to be held Saturday during which a final verdict will be delivered. Also, the run-off of presidential elections is set to kick off June 16-17. The state of emergency had been existing since 1981 in Egypt and was being renewed every three years.

Under the new plan, several destinations where the load factors are quite low might be dropped for the time being,” an Air India official told IANS. The airline is expected to fully shift to the truncated interim schedule from June 1, dropping seven international destinations including Hong Kong, Osaka, Seoul and Toronto. The airline will operate only 38 services instead of the regular 45. According to the airline official, bookings for international destinations have been tweaked. The interim plan will come into effect on the day when Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh is expected to unveil some of the major suggestions of the Justice C.S. Dharmadhikari Committee. The committee was constituted to recommend measures that will amend the integration barrier between Air India and the erstwhile Indian Airlines cadre, including that of pay scale and promotion. Currently, the carrier is operating through a contingency plan under which a bare minimum number of flights are maintained by clubbing operations to various destinations in Europe and the US. The interim plan comes a day after the strike by pilots of national carrier continued for the 24th day Thursday, pushing up its losses to more than Rs.330 crore. “We have lost nearly Rs.330 crore on account of ticket cancellation, unused labour and bulk of Boeing 777 fleet being grounded. “We expect to stabilise our operations and cut the losses to less than Rs.5 crore a day from June 2,” he said. Air India has maintained that it has enough executive pilots to operate services to long-haul destinations in the US and Europe on some of the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 aircraft. The airline is said to be examining several proposals to restore the international operations which includes wet leasing aircraft from other airlines. The proposal, according to officials, will include renting of aircraft with pilots and cabin crew. “There is a proposal to wet lease at least five aircraft with pilots and crew. We require pilots and crews to maintain operations to key destinations in Europe, the US and Southeast Asia,” said an official. The airline’s performance was also reviewed by the Civil Aviation Secretary Nazim Zaidi, who met key Air India officials. Trouble for the national carrier started May 8 when pilot-members of the Indian Pilots Guild took mass sick leave, protesting the move to provide Boeing-787 Dreamliner training to pilots from the erstwhile Indian Airlines. |
