The first phase of the project is under construction, with a target commercial operation date of May 2013. This project further strengthens and diversifies Areva’s low-carbon energy hub in India. |
Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra gets bail Posted: 13 Apr 2012 05:33 AM PDT Dr. Ambikesh Mahapatra, a professor of physical chemistry in Jadavpur University who was arrested on Thursday night for publishing cartoons of Mamta Bannerjee has been granted bail . Another person, Subrata Sengupta, the secretary of Mahapatra’s housing society, was also arrested as the professor allegedly used the society’s registered email id to send the cartoon strips. Both Mahapatra and Sengupta were granted bail by the court of 2nd judicial magistrate (Alipore) Suparna Roy. “All the sections under which Mahapatra and Sengupta were arrested were bailable and hence the court granted them bail. Moreover, one of the sections being non cognizable, the police were at fault in arresting him without a warrant,” said Mahapatra’s lawyer. Mahapatra was also beaten allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters while he was returning home and handed over to the police after filing a complaint against him. The arrest has evoked widespread condemnation. Trinamool Congress rebel MP Kabir Suman, condemning the arrest, said: “Even I have received the cartoon and I cannot fathom how it can be a cyber crime. It has been made in good humour. If he can be arrested today then who knows we may be arrested tomorrow.” Political leaders cutting across party lines have been vocal in condemning the arrest. While Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state secretary Rahul Sinha called the action a blatant misuse of power, Congress leader O.P. Mishra said the move was an attack on the democracy and freedom of speech and expression. Educationist Sunando Sanyal, once considered close to Banerjee, said: “This is not the change one had desired. It is unfortunate. I cannot understand how she (Banerjee) can take such a step. It shows her impatience.” Actor Kaushik Sen said: “I could not suppress my smile when I heard about the issue. But at the same time this is a laughable matter. If somebody draws a cartoon he has to be arrested? This is ridiculous and alarming. I feel concerned. May be, later our plays will be stopped and our houses attacked.” Students of Jadavpore university took printouts of the cartoon and displayed them in the campus, and put up posters opposing the arrest. The government, however, defended the police action. Transport Minister Madan Mitra said the act by Mahapatra was demeaning of a teacher while Labour Minister Purnendu Bose said: “It is an attempt to insult Banerjee and police have done what they are expected to do in such a case.” |

Infosys said in a statement televised by CBS that Palmer’s “allegations make for an interesting story, but it is not the facts.” A judge and jury will have the final say on Palmer’s accusations later this summer in an Alabama civil court case, it added. Palmer told CBS the first thing to catch his attention was an employee that had been in the US from India several times before. The B-1 is meant for employees who are travelling to consult with associates, attend training or a convention. But Palmer said the employees were brought in not for meetings, but for full time jobs. Meanwhile, Infosys has declared 440 percent final dividend of Rs.22 per share for fiscal 2011-12. The par value of its Share was Rs 5. Remembering martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Posted: 12 Apr 2012 11:58 PM PDT
The people responsible for this were Brigadier-General Reginald E.H. Dyer and British Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab Michael O’Dwyer . An hour after the meeting began as scheduled at 4:30 pm, Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer marched a group of sixty-five Gurkha and twenty-five Baluchi soldiers into the Bagh, fifty of whom were armed with rifles. He ordered them to shoot at the crowd which included men, women, and children. Dyer kept the firing up for about ten minutes. Dyer had also brought two armoured cars armed with machine guns, however the vehicles were left outside as they were unable to enter the Bagh through the narrow entrance. The Jallianwala Bagh was bounded on all sides by houses and buildings and had few narrow entrances, most of which were kept permanently locked. The main entrance was relatively wider, but was guarded by the troops backed by the armoured vehicles. General Dyer did not order the crowd to disperse; indeed he blocked the main exits. His goal, he explained later, was not to disperse the meeting but to punish the Indians for disobedience. General Dyer ordered his troops to begin shooting towards the densest sections of the crowd, including the women and children. He continued the shooting, approximately 1,650 rounds in all, until the ammunition supply was almost exhausted. The crowd made no effort to attack the soldiers in any way. A number of people died in stampedes at the narrow gates or by jumping into the solitary well on the compound to escape the shooting. A plaque in the monument at the site, set up after independence, says that 120 bodies were pulled out of the well. The wounded could not be moved from where they had fallen, as a curfew had been declared – many more died during the night. Official Government sources estimated the fatalities at 379, with 1,100 wounded. Actual, casualty numbers were more than 1,500, with approximately 1,000 killed. The news remained shielded for more than a month and it was only in June that people across India came to know about it. Rabindranath Tagore renounced his knighthood conferred upon him by British Government as a mark of protest. Dyer was sacked from his post, but back in Britain he became an overnight hero. No charges were framed against him or any disciplinary action was taken thereof. The Hunter Commission which was constituted to probe the massacre found him only guilty of a mistaken notion of duty.

Political parties fuming over Bihar Day Celebrations in Mumbai Posted: 12 Apr 2012 11:56 PM PDT The Shiv Sena on Friday adopted a non-confrontationist approach on the proposed Bihar Day celebrations in Mumbai where Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will be the chief guest Sunday, in contrast to the agitational path chosen by Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray said if Biharis want to celebrate ‘Bihar Day’ in Maharashtra, then they should also reciprocate by celebrating ‘Maharashtra Day’ in Bihar. “Bihar Day is April 15, while Maharashtra Day falls May 1. I only want to tell Nitish Kumar that after you return, celebrate Maharashtra Day in your state and invite our chief minister for it. It is said a good atmosphere will be created by celebrating Bihar Day here. So, celebrate Maharashtra Day and create a good atmosphere all over the country,” Thackeray said. On the other hand, his estranged cousin and MNS chief Raj has adopted an aggressive approach vis-à-vis the Bihar Day celebrations and threatened to disrupt the events here. Addressing an election rally Thursday night, Raj made a controversial allegation that Malegaon – a Muslim-dominated town in Nashik district – had become a hub of terrorists following migrants from north India. Since the past fortnight, the MNS has been vociferously opposing ‘Bihar Day’ celebrations and even challenged Nitish Kumar to enter Mumbai for the celebrations. This prompted Nitish Kumar last week to comment that he was “free to travel anywhere in the country and did not need a visa to come to Mumbai”. Stating that the country belonged to everyone, Union Agriculture Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar said no one should oppose celebrations like Bihar Diwas. “The country belongs to everyone…in Delhi there are two lakh Maharashtrians and they celebrate Maharashtra Din,” Pawar told reporters here While Samajwadi Party state chief Abu Asim Azmi demanded that Raj must “be arrested and handcuffed”, veteran social worker Medha Patkar has sought legal action against the MNS chief for his anti-Bihari utterances. Thackeray, however, maintained that he would spell out the Shiv Sena stand on the issue after ascertaining the views of other parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party. Shiv Sena and the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), which rules Bihar, are part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Meanwhile, as the political controversy rages, hectic preparations are under way in Mumbai where over 300,000 Bihars are expected to converge for the event in Somaiya Ground, Vidyavihar in the eastern suburbs.
