Earth Hour is on March 31st 2012 Posted: 24 Mar 2012 09:58 AM PDT Earth Hour 2012 will take place on March 31 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm . Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. In February, Earth Hour launched its 2012 campaign, "I Will If You Will", with the intention of engaging its growing global community to go beyond the hour. Using a dedicated YouTube platform [5], IWIYW asks Earth Hour’s digital community to inspire people from all corners of the globe to take sustainability actions, and to share their commitment to the environment with their own social media networks. “Earth Hour is your chance to vote for Earth by shutting down your lights between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. your local time,” the WWF website read. The origin of the campaign can be traced back to Australia in 2007 when businesses and residents in Sydney turned off their lights for one hour to make a statement about energy use and global warming. Moscow, Geneva, Budapest, Berlin, Rome, Barcelona, Helsinki, Oslo, Madrid, Paris, London, Amsterdam and Vienna are some European cities that will turn off in the name of sustainability all non-essential lights. In Asia, cities like Bangkok, Singapore, Mumbai, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Seoul, New Delhi, Auckland and Shanghai will support the WWF initiative. In North America, Toronto, Vancouver, New York and Chicago are among those that will go dark. In the South, cities including Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Sao Paulo, Valparaiso will take part. Even the Davis research station in Antarctica will turn off its lights. “This year Earth Hour asks people to commit to the event, big or small, for the coming year, taking Earth Hour beyond the hour,” said Andy Ridley, co-founder and executive director of Earth Hour. Cities participating in the global initiative will not just switch off their electricity, but will also plant greenery and install LED street lamps. |
Agent Vinod records a 10 crore Earning on Friday Posted: 24 Mar 2012 09:39 AM PDT Saif Ali Khan’s home production “Agent Vinod” has earned Rs.10 crore on the first day, and is the actor’s biggest solo opening so far. Made at a budget of Rs.50 crore, the film has been shot in Morocco, Russia and Latvia. “Saif Ali Khan has grown as an actor and also grown as a box-office power. The number of screens first decide the craze for the film and the first day business is an indicator of its strength at the box office,” said trade analyst Taran Adarsh. “The massive figures only go to show that Saif has a rare combination of talent and box office pull,” added Adarsh. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, the spy thriller also features Kareena Kapoor, Prem Chopra and Ram Kapoor. While it is produced under Saif’s “Illuminati Films” banner, Eros International has distributed it. Saif says it was the best time to release a film like “Agent Vinod”. “The concept should appeal to people… it’s got an exciting plot… The style, the narrative – the strength of the story and its ‘Tin Tin’ qualities is the USP of ‘Agent Vinod’. Times have changed and so have our movies. This is the right time for ‘Agent Vinod’,” said Saif, who feels he has challenged himself with a film like this. “I have challenged myself physically in roles before. One such role was of Langda Tyagi in ‘Omkara’. In ‘Agent Vinod’, I had to be fit, very fit. I had to train hard. It was a gruelling schedule to do action. It is very demanding. I have a lot of respect for action heroes because I’ve got to know what it takes to be one,” he added. The theatre owners are happy with the first day response to the film and hope that it will sustain in the coming weeks. “The response to the film has been good. We have witnessed an occupancy of about 85 percent. The action and stunts of the film are quite appealing to the youngsters,” Gautam Datta, of PVR Pvt Ltd told IANS. |

On Bihar model, UP to videograph all its works Posted: 24 Mar 2012 01:20 AM PDT On the lines of Practices followed by Bihar Government , the newly constituted Uttar Pradesh Government has decided to videograph all its work. The directives were issued by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Rural Development Arvind Singh ‘Gop’ to officials Friday. “I have warned the officials to get out of the old mindset and start afresh with priorities that are in sync with the promises made by the Samajwadi Party (SP) government” he told IANS Saturday. Arvind Singh ‘Gop’ further said that he would soon be travelling to rural areas and see for himself what work was going on, and whether the standards were being maintained or not. The minister also asked officials to make regular trips to villages and blocks and keep an eye on projects that were aimed at benefitting the poor. “There are a lot of projects like the MNREGA, Indira Awaas Yojna, Regular Employment Schemes etc that were tailormade for the poor and to provide them better living, but unfortunately graft has made a mess of the whole system,” Gop said, adding that “through his own system” he would keep a tab on the functioning of his officials and ensure a transparent format in the ministry. |
