Bikram Singh next to lead the Indian Army

Posted: 03 Mar 2012 01:41 PM PST

bikram singh indian armyLt. Gen. Bikram Singh has been designated as the next Army Chief after the present Chief Gen. V. K. Singh retires in May. Bikram Singh, 59, will be the first army chief who joined the 1.13-million strong force after the 1971 Bangladesh war with Pakistan. He will be the second Sikh to head the army after Gen. J.J. Singh.

“Lt. Gen. Bikram Singh has been designated as the next chief of army staff in the rank of general, with effect from the afternoon of May 31, 2012,” a government statement said.

Lt. Gen. Bikram Singh currently heads the Army’s eastern command and will take the top post May 31 when Gen. V.K. Singh will be retiring from service.

The appointment of the next army chief comes after an intricate vetting process in the wake of allegation that Bikram Singh was involved in a fake shootout case in Kashmir and an intelligence check on his family members.

According to sources, the defence ministry had sought a detailed clearance from intelligence agencies on his eldest daughter-in-law who was alleged to be a Pakistani citizen. This had raised fears of “security risks and implications”.

But intelligence agencies rubbished this and in fact informed the defence ministry that the daughter-in-law is a US citizen. She is a daughter of an Afghan and her mother is from a Central Asian country.

The designated army chief was also alleged to be involved in a fake shootout in Kashmir in March 2001.

The mother of an alleged militant killed in a south Kashmir village alleged that his son was a civilian labourer and troops brigaded by Bikram Singh had killed him in a staged gunbattle.

But Kashmir Police gave Bikram Singh a clean chit over the case even though a petition is still pending in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

Bikram Singh was among the three short-listed senior-most officers — Vice Chief of Army Lt Gen Shri Krishna Singh and Northern Army Commander Lt Gen K.T. Parnaik being the other two — contending for the top post.

He emerged as the front-runner for the top post because of his seniority amongst the short-listed candidates.

Bikram Singh was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment in 1972 after finishing his course in the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy.

He also attended the US Army War College, Pennsylvania.

During his 40-year-long service in the Indian Army, he has served in a variety of command and staff appointments.

He has commanded a corps in the Northern Command.

He had served as deputy force commander of a multi-nation UN peace-keeping mission in Congo and also as UN observer in Nicaragua and El Salvador during the early 1990s.

Incumbent Gen V.K. Singh, who was till a fortnight ago engaged in a bitter legal battle over his date of birth, was issued the Retirement Warning Letter (RWL) by the Military Secretary’s branch early this week after months of row over his age which was finally settled in the Supreme Court last month.

NASA was hacked 13 times last year

Posted: 03 Mar 2012 04:06 AM PST

NASA said hackers stole employee credentials and gained access to mission-critical projects last year in 13 major network breaches that could compromise U.S. national security.

The space agency discovered in November that hackers working through an Internet Protocol address in China broke into the -network of NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

One of NASAs key labs, JPL manages 23 spacecraft conducting active space missions, including missions to Jupiter, Mars and Saturn. He said the hackers gained full system access, which allowed them to modify, copy, or delete sensitive files, create new user accounts and upload hacking tools to steal user credentials and compromise other NASA systems. They were also able to modify system logs to conceal their actions. ‘Our review disclosed that the intruders had compromised the accounts of the most privileged JPL users, giving the intruders access to most of JPLs networks.

In another attack last year, intruders stole credentials for accessing NASA systems from more than 150 employees. Martin said the his office identified thousands of computer security lapses at the agency in 2010 and 2011. He also said NASA has moved too slowly to encrypt or scramble the data on its laptop computers to protect information from falling into the wrong hands. Unencrypted notebook computers that have been lost or stolen include ones containing codes for controlling the International Space Station, as well as sensitive data on NASAs Constellation and Orion programs.

Shiksha of Agneepath files complain for cybersquatting

Posted: 03 Mar 2012 03:04 AM PST

shiksha aka Kanika Tiwary of AgneepathRemember 15 year old Shiksha from Agneepath, who was Hrithik Roshan’s sister in the movie. She is again in the news. Siksha whose real name is Kanika Tiwary has filed a complaint with Bhopal Police that a fake fan club account have been opened on a social networking site using her name.

“These fake accounts, which use my name, are creating problems for me,” the teenaged actress said today. Police confirmed the receipt of complaint from Kanika’s father.

So far no obscene comments had been posted in these fake accounts, her mother said, adding the complaint has been lodged as a precautionary measure.

While this can be a correct legal step, a fan club on any Social Networking site is usually created by the Fans, rather than by the celebrity. In such circumstances, filing a complain seems to be a stupid act.Had there been a fake profile in her name, it would definitely been punishable, but Fan CLub is entirely different thing.

TCS shifting from Services to Product echleon

Posted: 03 Mar 2012 02:34 AM PST

When in 2009 Natrajan Chnadrasekharan took over as the CEO of India’s largest Software Exporter, Tata Consultancy services, he had some odd goals in mind. He even expressed them by promising a non-linear growth within a span of 2 years. What he meant was to rival major Software Product companies like Micorsoft, Adobe etc.
Now TCS is all set to show a non linear growth in balance sheets by selling off a number of In-house Software Products, a trend which is likely to be followed by other Software Service Providers of the Country.

For TCS, the main pillars of non-linearity would be TCS Bancs, its core banking software; Diligenta, its insurance services platform that is gaining traction in Europe; and iON, the cloud-based IT-as-aservice offering for small and medium businesses. TCS Bancs is already being used by a majority of Banking Sector organizations

It also has a £600-million (Rs 4,700 crore) contract from UK state pension authority as well as another $2.2-billion (Rs 10,800 crore) deal with UK insurer Friends Life.

TCS and other Indian providers are evolving beyond their legacy in application development, and attempting to develop automated and repeatable assets much like their global competitors have done for years.

This is a time of paradigm shift in the Indian IT Industry, when the dependency on the Foreign Clients is getting reduced. There is being a transition from Services to Product. Out-sourcing is being replaced by On-shoring and In-house product development.
