45,000 constables to be recruited

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 06:23 PM PDT

The Bihar government will recruit 45,000 constables over the next five years, Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said on Wednesday.

The recruitment would bring deployment of policemen per one lakh population to the national ratio, he informed the state Assembly in reply to a debate on the home department’s budget of Rs 3969 crores.

The Nitish Kumar government has been able to establish the rule of law in the state in contrast to the lawlessness that prevailed in the state during the RJD-led government of 15 years, he said.

The law and order situation in Bihar has come in for praise from across the country and the world, the water resources minister said.

Nitish rejects the doctorate degree by PU

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 03:11 AM PDT

PATNA: Chief minister Nitish Kumar has declined the offer of Patna University (PU) to confer upon him an honorary doctorate degree at the annual convocation scheduled for March 28. The PU syndicate had decided to award the degree to Nitish in view of his valuable contribution to the development of Bihar.

A few years back, the then chief minister, Lalu Prasad, had also declined the PU’s offer for an honorary doctorate in view of the reported controversy among the academics on this issue.

More than 1,700 PU scholars who passed post-graduation and PhD examinations of 2010 will be conferred on their degrees at the annual convocation scheduled to be held at the SK Memorial Hall. Former Lt. General S K Sinha is likely to be the chief guest and deliver the convocation address. Governor-cum-chancellor Devanand Konwar will preside over the function.

PU examination controller D N Sharma said the students whose results were announced by July 2010 would receive their degrees at the convocation. As many as 56 toppers of different examinations would be awarded gold medals.

Earlier, the convocation was scheduled to be held in September last year, but it could not be held due to some technical reasons.

The journey from Place of Shame to Hall of Fame

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 11:10 PM PDT

Patna, March 22: Twenty-seven-year-old Saurabh Verma left for Delhi right after completing his graduation in the state. He wanted to carve a bright future for himself in the career capital of the country.

Seven years have passed ever since. Saurabh is now a middle-level executive in an MNC in the capital but today he is a much more proud Bihari. Given an opportunity, he would love to return to the state and work here. And as Bihar celebrates Bihar Divas for the first time today, youngsters like Saurabh, who left the state for better education and career prospects, are proud to wear the 'Bihari' tag on their sleeves.

"Till a few years ago, many people used to hide the fact that they are from Bihar for fear of drawing unwanted comments and jokes. It was something Biharis were ashamed of. They would take pride if someone said that they did not sound or behave like a Bihari. The scene is completely transformed now. Bihar is making waves for unprecedented development and now being a Bihari is something really cool. Given a chance, I would love to contribute to the development of the state," said Saurabh over telephone from New Delhi.

Poonam Chaudhary, a 24-year-old student of social communication media at Sophia College, Mumbai, said even her friends in college have changed their attitude towards Biharis. Bihar is rapidly changing and is suddenly known for many good things and the changes are not only confined to drastic improvement in law and order but in other fields like infrastructure, education, job opportunities and many more. My friends outside the state are talking a lot about the fast development in Bihar. As for example, the girls in my college who come from different corners of the country enjoy speaking Bihari Hindi nowadays. I feel so proud of my state now," she said.

"I still remember days whenever I left home, my mother would insist that I got back home before sunset. Now, when I go home during vacations, I am comfortably out till late in the evening. There is a sense of security not just within myself but with my parents as well. This is just one example of how Bihar has become secure for women," she added.

Swati Singh, a Delhi-based PR professional who did her bachelor in mass communications from Patna Women's College and moved outside for a job, says the changes were unbelievable.

"I was pleasantly surprised to see the changes when I went to my hometown Patna after almost four years. However, the government is yet to focus on creating job opportunities so that youngsters like me can establish themselves in the state. I wish I were there to contribute to the dignity and development of my state," said Swati.

Sameer Anand, an animation student in Delhi who hails from Samastipur, expressed similar views. "Now that the Nitish-led government has prepared environment conducive for development, their focus should be to ensure specialised education opportunities and development of private sector to plug the brain drain," said a zealous Sameer.

Foreigners come calling on Bihar Diwas

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 08:28 PM PDT

The almost 15-feet-high steel-sheet statue of Gautam Buddha, sculpted by a team of Holland's Tiana Hegan, South Africa's Youhan and Delhi's Sanjeev and Shikha Sinha, was the main attraction during the three-day Bihar Diwas celebrations at Gandhi Maidan here.

Mingling with the crowd of approximately 25,000 people who are visiting the place daily are foreigners from Egypt, Libya, Qatar and Yemen — both tourists and artistes — who have come to the land of the Apostle of Peace in search of solace in these turbulent times.

And to add to the traditional flavour, there's also the authentic litti-chokha and Udwant Nagar's famous sweet dish, belgrami.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is not tired of saying that Bihar in its centenary year has come a full circle and is already on an upward journey to the top — just as it was in the ancient times when the region boasted of the oldest republic, Vaishali.
While artistes from other states and countries have been regaling the audience with their performances, besides the Buddha statue that took a month to be sculpted, stone carvings of Swiss artist Pepin and works of English artist Mark Stonestreet are also attracting a large number of people.

The highlight of the second day celebrations was a visit by Bill Gates who moved around the suburbs of the state capital with a mission — a healthy Bihar.
