The Biography of Balwant Singh Rajoana Posted: 27 Mar 2012 03:59 PM PDT Balwant Singh  Rajoana is the prime accused in the assasination of Punjab CM Beant Singh in 31 August, 1995. He was born in Rajoana village in Raikot district of Punjab in a traditional Sikh Family. When he was small his Father was killed by terrorists. Two motorcyclists had attacked his house but his father and his three uncles overpowered them. One of the Terrorists shot at Balwant's father, who later died. His elder brother Kulwant Singh says that, “ He was an intelligent boy, fond of reading novels, ghazals and poetry. He wrote too. In 1986, he joined the Punjab Police and did not come home too often”. According to his brother, he always said that, ” Khalsa Raj has to be brought about peacefully. We do not want violence of any kind. Even now, we have been telling the jathas to move around peacefully”. Baltej Singh, who has been Balwant's friend since childhood, remembers him as a cool, calm and shy boy. "We can never believe that he joined the hardliners. Only he alone can explain how and when he became a hardliner. For us, he is the son of this village and my friend. Balwant Singh Rajoana was a constable and  a close friend of Shaheed Dilawar Singh, another serving police officer in the Punjab Police who on 31 August, 1995 assissinated the then Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh.  Rajoana was the second human bomb to be used in case if Dilawar had failed in his mission. The blast claimed the lives of 17 others including 3 Indian commandos. Beant Singh was accompanied by his close friend Ranjodh Singh Mann on the day of assassination, who also succumbed. The blast occurred as Mr. Beant Singh was stepping into a heavily armored car at the the main government building in Chandigarh, the capital. It is  said that the explosion threw human remains and debris more than 100 yards, and wounded 23 people, some of whom were in critical condition. Jagtar Singh Hawara, Balwant Singh Rajoana, Paramjeet Singh Bheora and  Jagtar Singh Tara were the prominent among those charged for assassinating CM Beant Singh. Balwant Singh Rajoana had "openly confessed" an involvement and strongly expressed no faith in Indian judiciary. He refused to defend himself in the court and accepted the sentence. He accused Indian courts for applying dual standards of law and accused Indian system for shielding culprits of Sikh genocide 1984.  ”Asking for mercy from them is not even in my distant dreams,” Rajoana said in a open letter to Media. In his will,  Balwant Singh expressed desire that his eyes should be transplanted to Hazoori Ragi of Darbar Sahib and  visually impaired Lakhwinder Singh.

I say that this film is my ‘Vaastav’ (which had Sanjay Dutt in the lead role). On a serious note, it’s a career defining film and it’s something that I have taken very seriously,” the 39-year-old, who has lately been seen in comedies and dramas, said at an event here. Directed by Sanjay Gupta, “Shootout At Wadala” also stars Anil Kapoor, Sonu Sood, Mahesh Manjrekar, Manoj Bajpayee, Tusshar Kapoor, Ronit Roy and Kangna Ranaut. John, who has turned producer with “Vicky Donor”, adds that he is having a great time with the team of his first production venture. “I am enjoying a lot because my cast of Ayushmann Khurana, Yami Gautam and Anuji (Anu Kapoor) are super talented. Our director Shoojit Sircar, with whom I am doing my next film, we are all a great team. We are really having a great time and enjoying this,” he said. John’s last release was “Desi Boyz” and he is currently gearing up for Sajid Khan’s “Housefull 2″ that hits theatres April 5.

Rajoana to be hanged till death rules Court Posted: 27 Mar 2012 05:11 AM PDT Balwant Singh Rajoana, the Babbar Khalsa International terrorist sentenced to death in the 1995 assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, should hang as scheduled on March 31, a Chandigarh court ruled Tuesday. The court returned the warrant of death of Rajoana to the Patiala jail authorities. The court also issued a showcause notice for contempt of court to Patiala prison jail superintendent L.S. Jakhar. Patiala jail superintendent L.S. Jakhar had earlier returned the warrant of death issued by the court saying that the legal circumstances of the Beant Singh assassination case were such that Rajoana could not be hanged till the Supreme Court decided all related issues. The matter of two other terrorists, Jagtar Singh Hawara and Lakhwinder Singh, convicted in the same case, is pending before the Supreme Court. The CBI has approached the Supreme Court in Hawara’s case as his death sentence, awarded by the CBI special court in 2007, was commuted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2010 to life imprisonment. The appeal of Lakhwinder Singh against his conviction is also pending. However, the high court had upheld Rajoana’s death sentence in the case as he had refused to defend himself. The Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikh religion, had last week asked the Punjab government and the SGPC to initiate steps to save Rajoana from the gallows. Beant Singh, a former Punjab chief minister (1992-95), who was largely credited with wiping out terrorism from Punjab, was assassinated by a human bomb, Dilawar Singh, at the high security Punjab civil secretariat here Aug 31, 1995. While Hawara was the mastermind of the assassination, Rajoana was the second human bomb to be used in case the first assassin failed. Rajoana, during the entire 11-year trial, had admitted that he alone was responsible for the killing of Beant Singh. The family members of Beant Singh have also stated that they had forgiven Rajoana and that his death sentence be converted to life imprisonment.

Antony blames Army Chief for inaction in Bribery Case Posted: 27 Mar 2012 03:02 AM PDT New Delhi:  Defence Minister A.K. Antony admitted Tuesday that army chief Gen. V.K. Singh informed him about Lt Gen (retd) Tejinder Singh offering a bribe of Rs.14 crore but didn’t want to pursue the matter. Antony told parliament he would investigate the army chief’s allegations and was ready to cancel any contract if there was corruption. The minister Monday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the allegations. “He (army chief) told me Lt Gen Tejinder Singh offered him bribe but he told me he did not want to pursue it. No written complaint was given. Till today I have not received any written complaint from him and after yesterday’s (Monday) report, I have ordered a CBI inquiry,” Antony told parliament. The minister said he started his political career in 1958 as a student union leader and had fought corruption all through his life. “From day one as defence minister I have cleared my position that I am for modernisation of forces but will not tolerate corruption. I have nothing to hide and will say nothing but the truth,” he said. Antony assured the house that he would go to any extent to probe the army chief’s allegation. “Will take action, nobody will be spared. Will cancel all contracts if any corruption was found. If I am wrong, punish me. But I have done my best,” he said. The army chief has disclosed that he was offered a kickback of Rs.14 crore in his office by a retired defence officer, sending shockwaves through the defence establishment. He said he had informed Antony immediately about the conversation. Antony also promised to streamline the defence procurement process. “We are also discussing how to tighten the system and improve the procurement process,” said Antony. Antony’s remarks come a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party said the minister’s indecisiveness could be one of the reasons why the army chief spoke to the media. BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and S.S. Ahluwalia said in the Rajya Sabha Tuesday that they had no doubt about the minister’s honesty, but asked him to clarify why such a charge was being levelled after over a year and why no action was taken. “Over the last few months, the facts that are tumbling out make the situation curiouser and curiouser. There is civilian control over the armed forces, and such confrontations need to be avoided,” said Jaitley. The BJP leader said Antony should have made a distinction between “substantiated charge” and “baseless charge” and should have got the matter investigated. “…putting blinkers on and not getting the charge inquired at all means that we are learning to live with corruption,” Jaitley said. “We are completely with you in curbing corruption in the defence forces,” Jaitley told Antony. “But please maintain a judicious balance between curbing corruption and act on defence preparedness and modernisation of defence forces.”

Sachin from India wins YouTube Space Lab 2012 Award Posted: 26 Mar 2012 11:53 PM PDT Sachin  S. Kukke from India  is the Asia-Pacific region  winner of the YouTube Space Lab 2012 Award. The winners of the contest by YouTube and Lenovo, in cooperation with Space Adventures, NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) were announced at a ceremony at the Newseum here Friday. The award has been given to students who have designed experiments to be performed in the outer Space. A total of ^ award has been given, one in each region. Kukke’s experiment explores transfer of heat in ferrofluid – a special liquid that gets magnetized when subjected to a magnetic field. The study can benefit development of advanced cooling and heat transfer systems. A student of mechanical engineering at the BMS College for Engineering in Bangalore, Kukke called on Indian Ambassador to the US Nirupama Rao Friday and shared his experience of conceptualising and carrying out innovative scientific experiments, an Indian Embassy release said. Warmly congratulating Kukke on his achievement, Rao said that in India, a country engaged in rapid economic development, “students like Sachin symbolise the hopes and the potential of a dynamic, resurgent India and it’s young population”. She encouraged Kukke to pursue his goals and interests in the specialised area of aerospace engineering and wished him the very best for the years ahead. At the meeting, Kukke was accompanied by Lee Hunter, head of brand marketing for YouTube, and Claudio Lilienfeld, senior policy manager for Asia Pacific at Google. Nearly 40 percent of the total number of entries for the contest came from India alone, an indicator of the skills and level of interest in the field of exploration of outer space among the youth in India.

US preparing to impose Economic Sanctions on India Posted: 26 Mar 2012 10:41 PM PDT India may face Economic Sanctions from United States if it continues to import oil from Iran. The Final decision in this regard will be taken by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton towards the End of June, State Department spokesperson, Victoria Nuland said Previously  United States had  imposed economic sanctions on India for its series of underground nuclear tests in1998. The United States is in conversation with  12 countries on ways and means to avoid the American sanctions against them, she said. “We are still working with all of these countries and trying to do what we can to help them to reduce their dependence on Iranian oil. As you know, we have 180 days under this legislation, which takes us into the end of June,” Nuland told reporters. “We have 180 days in the legislation to make a determination one way or the other. So we’re continuing to work with them in the intervening period,” Nuland said responding to questions on the time line of the determinations against these 12 countries. In all 23 countries import oil from Iran, last week, the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, had announced that 11 of these nations – mostly those from Europe and Japan – have been exempted from the Iranian sanctions act because of the significant reduction in oil import from Iran. The US says it is in talks with the rest of the 12 countries including India, China, Turkey and South Korea in this regard.

Nitish confident of Bihar getting Special Category Status Posted: 26 Mar 2012 08:04 PM PDT Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is confident that Bihar would soon get the Special State Status.  He was referring to the Inter-Ministerial Committee formed to allot Special Category to some states. The group held discussions with a delegation of officials from Bihar led by Chief Secretary Navin Kumar for over 90 minutes in New Delhi earlier during the day. “Both facts and logic are heavily in favour of the state’s demand for a special status to Bihar and I have confidance that Bihar would definitely be accorded a special state status by the centre,” Kumar said. He described today’s meeting with the members of inter-ministerial group in New Delhi as satisfactory. On the reports of alleged attempts to bribe Army Chief V K Singh, the chief minister said, “Everyday there are reports of one issue after another at the Centre. “This is a phase of instability at the centre and the matter regarding army chief required to be thoroughly probed,” he said

Ayodhya Verdict Judges provided with Z-Class Security Posted: 26 Mar 2012 04:45 PM PDT Judges involved in the Ayodhya Verdict have been provided with Z- Class Security amid threat to their lives. The security has been  provided to Justice S.U. Khan, Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Justice D.V. Sharma (now retired), was owing to threat perceptions emanating from terror groups like SIMI and Indian Mujahideen, the government informed. The court Monday was hearing a petition demanding security cover to judges and lawyers who represented the Hindu side during the petition. A division bench of Justice D.P. Singh and Justice D.K. Upadhyay had asked the centre and the Uttar Pradesh government to see that security arrangements were in place in and around the HC’s Lucknow and Allahabad bench campus. The writ petition before the HC bench had last week raised issues of security of the judges and lawyers after the arrest of four terrorists by Madhya Pradesh ATS in June 2011. During their interrogation, the arrested terrorists had spoken of plans to attack lawyers involved in the contentious title suits. The two-judge bench Monday issued directions to the respondents to ensure that no car or vehicles should be permitted to enter the premises of the HC without pass and screening/under vehicle search mirror. The bench further said that no person including the litigants and members of Bar shall be allowed to enter into the court premises without due check at security points. The HC bench further directed the competent state authorities and CRPF officials to work on further improvement of the security set up and to inform the court of the action taken report (ATR) in pursuance to the meeting. The court set the next date of hearing on April 19. The court also asked for a gunner and shadow to be provided for Ranjana Agnihotri, the petitioner.

Samastipur Jute Mill destroyed in Flames Posted: 26 Mar 2012 02:22 PM PDT Samastipur Jute mill, which is Bihar’s only Jute Mill and  the lone survivor among the Jute Mills of Eastern region is on the verge of destruction.  A major Fire broke out in the mill 4 days ago and it is still in flames. Around 50 Fire Trucks has been deployed but still the fire could not be controlled.  This is a major setback to the econony of a poor district like Samastipur as the Jute mill employed close to 5000 labourers. Sources say that  one person has been dead in the fire while two others were injured. Property worth Rs 25 Crores has also been destroyed in Flames.

Pakistani officer visits Delhi Gurdwara quietly Posted: 26 Mar 2012 08:49 AM PDT Pakistan’s Deputy Attorney General Muhammad Khurshid Khan paid a quiet visit to one of Delhi’s famous gurdwaras, leaving officials of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) waiting for him all day. “I received a call from Khan Saturday saying he wants to visit Rakabganj the next day and do voluntary service. I asked him to come around 4 p.m. but he never turned up,” DSGMC chief Paramjit Singh Sarna told IANS. He denied having any idea of Khan visiting the Rakabganj gurdwara, which is also the head office of DSGMC — the body in-charge of all gurdwaras in the capital. According to media reports, Khan, in India as part of a delegation to attend a legal conference, visited Rakabganj Sunday noon and did voluntary shoe service. “A delegation of Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Council was in India to attend a conference. We have no idea about their schedule,” said an official of the Pakistan High Commission.

Readers distributing newspapers in Kerala Posted: 26 Mar 2012 06:19 AM PDT  Newspaper readers in India’s most literate state have taken up distribution of newspapers in many places in the wake of the week-old strike by newspaper agents. The agents, led by the Coordination Committee of Newspaper Agents’ Unions of Kerala, are currently on an indefinite strike demanding a hike in trade discount from the current 28 percent to 50 percent of the cover price of the newspaper and additional service charge for pull-outs and supplements. Barring the capital district and Kollam, the normal distribution of newspapers to homes at dawn has stopped, leaving many an avid newspaper reader uncomfortable. The strike is sponsored by unions affiliated to the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)’s trade union wing CITU and they have excluded party organs from the strike. “This is distressing ordinary people who depend on the newspaper for numerous needs, especially to convey the news of death. It is strange that the agents are continuing to distribute party organs. What sort of strike is this? We have decided to come out and start distributing papers. Let us see who will stop us,” said an angry group of people who gathered at a town near Kottayam. In Thrissur, officials at the Taluk Office Monday took to distributing the newspapers before their office started. In Wadakancherry near Thrissur, the police arrested two people who prevented an official of a leading newspaper organisation from distributing newspapers. Near Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s home in Kottayam, the police arrested three persons who prevented people from distributing newspapers. Later, the arrested were released on bail. In Pakkil near Kottayam, the St Theresa’s Church decided to take up the distribution of newspapers through a church-based organisation. The parish vicar, Fr Alex Kochad gave the first copy to a local village council member Monday. Meanwhile the Kerala high court served notices to the state government and agents. The court asked the state government Monday to let it know what steps it had taken to deal with the strike. Meanwhile, with the papers not reaching the homes, many of the advertisers also are reluctant to put out any advertisements because they may not reach the desired sections. Various newspaper organisations have started to give newspapers free of cost to those who come to their office. But when they saw that a section of people were misusing this facility, they started to give the newspapers at a cost less the agents’ commission. Kerala Labour Minister Shibu Baby John has called a meeting with the agents Monday evening to see what can be done to end the strike.

How China is invading Indian territory Posted: 26 Mar 2012 04:04 AM PDT China is slowly acclerating its activities along the Indian borders and often invading Indian Territories. Long-range missiles on Tibetan soil are a constant threat. Of late, a large number of Chinese troops have been spotted in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). It has commissioned an ultra modern airfield apart from a state-of-the-art railways network which could not be taken lightly. “Chinese soldiers have forced the stoppage of road construction in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. China disputes the sovereign integrity of India by protesting against your visit to the state of Arunachal Pradesh which is a matter of concern.” Chinese helicopters have been spotted at Kaurik, close to the international border in the Spiti Valley in the hill state of Himachal. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has urged the prime minister for construction of the Bhanupalli-Bilaspur-Manali-Leh rail link at the earliest and also a strategic world-class airfield on the Indian side of the international border in Himachal Pradesh. “Steps should be taken for securing the national interest in view of the enhanced Chinese threats besides construction of world-class roads and bridges in the border areas,” he said. The issue of Chinese helicopters being spotted at Kaurik, close to the international border in the Spiti Valley in the hill state, March 16 was raised in the assembly. Ram Lal Markandey a local MLA, said the helicopters were spotted by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The latest intrusion at Kaurik, some 330 km from state capital Shimla, was the second of its kind in four months, he said.

Among the innovators, the 24-year-old Bangalorean Anirudh Sharma will demo his Haptic shoe for the visually impaired, while 28-year-old Chennai-based social activist Venkatesan Oosur Vinayagam will unleash his mobile ‘antakshari’ (singing competition) and 35-year-old Delhi-based Somnath Ray will display a recreated para-transit mode of mobility for the physically challenged. Leopard enters Nashik City and attacks three Posted: 26 Mar 2012 01:59 AM PDT Panic gripped the city as a leopard strayed into a thickly populated residential area from the adjacent jungles Monday and attacked three people, including a minor girl, police said. According to Nashik police, a full-grown leopard entered the Ramwadi locality of the city around 6.30 a.m. and was sighted by some people going for their morning walks. Word about the big cat sighting spread like wildfire and people started running helter-skelter to safety as the leopard hunted for small prey like dogs or goats. But the scared animal pounced on three people, including a minor girl, as it attempted to escape and bolt back to the forests adjacent to the city. Police summoned forest department officials who arrived on the scene and initiated efforts to drive the leopard back to the jungles. The injured trio has been rushed to a nearby hospital, and both police and forest officials assured the animal would be trapped soon. Incidentally, just four days ago, forest officials had trapped a leopard from the Sinnar subdistrict of Nashik and released it in the jungles. It had attacked and killed a tribal resident Kashabai Ughade of Waghdarawadi village.

Indian comes up with an Un-manned Cloud Seeding Vehicle Posted: 26 Mar 2012 12:51 AM PDT An Indian-promoted aviation company in New Zealand is developing what it claims to be the world’s first Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for cloud seeding. Auckland-based Apeiron Aerospace, an innovative aerospace company focussed on delivering technology to the global UAV sector, has designed a tactical UAV system for cloud seeding as the existing process involving manned aircraft endangers the lives of pilots. “There is a need for UAVs for cloud seeding. It is a question of pilot’s life. It becomes very difficult to control the aircraft in high turbulence,” Sanjeev Rao, director, Apeiron Aerospace, told IANS here. The firm floated by him last year exhibited its model at India Aviation 2012 here recently. Apeiron, which has tied up with Bangalore-based Krishi Air Private Limited, feels there is a market for such UAVs in India. “Manned aircraft are being used for cloud seeding. The pilot has to agree to go into the clouds which is very dangerous. Usually they don’t want to go,” he said. Rao said the design exhibited at the air show was a robust one. The UAV can fly into the cloud, do the seeding and fly out. The design was prepared six months ago, but a prototype is expected to be ready in another six to eight months. It will then be flight tested.   This is how the Cloud seeding works Besides India, the company is looking at other Asian, European, American and Australian markets. The company is also coming out with different variants of tactical UAV system, which can be used for intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance. Apeiron will display its variants for the military at the Defexpo-2012 to be held at Delhi from March 29. He feels there is a huge market for UAVs in India, especially the military market. “The army, coast guard and the Navy need UAVs. There is definitely a market in India and I am hopeful that we will be able to strike a deal.” He pointed out that unlike the US and Europe, India has a fewer UAVs, but there is huge requirement of the same in India. He hoped that regulations would be relaxed to facilitate the growth of the UAV sector. Army Chief row: Defense Minister orders CBI Investgation Posted: 25 Mar 2012 11:37 PM PDT Defence Minister A.K. Antony Monday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into army chief Gen V.K. Singh’s allegations that he had been offered a bribe of Rs.14 crore. Defence ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar told IANS here that the minister gave the orders after seeing reports of army chief’s claim in this regard. The army chief told The Hindu Monday that a lobbyist offered him a bribe of Rs.14 crore to have tranche of 600 sub-standard vehicles of a particular make cleared for purchase. “Just imagine, these men had the gumption to walk up to me and tell me that if i cleared the tranche, he would give me Rs. 14 crore. He was offering a bribe to me,” the army chief said. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till noon after opposition members raised the allegations levelled by army chief Gen. V.K. Singh that he had been offered a bribe to clear a tranche of 600 substandard vehicles. The Lok Sabha was adjourned till noon after opposition members raised the demand for separate statehood for Telangana. As soon as the Rajya Sabha met in the morning, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and some other opposition parties were on their feet, demanding a response from the government on the revelations made by the army chief. The BJP had give a notice for suspension of question hour on the issue. Chairman Hamid Ansari said all matters were discussed in the house through appropriate procedures. He urged members to allow question hour to proceed. However, as opposition members did not relent, the house was adjourned till 12. In the Lok Sabha, members of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and some other parties raised the demand for carving out a state of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh. Some members also raised the allegations by Gen Singh that he had been offered a bribe to clear the purchase of substandard equipment. Speaker Meira Kumar repeatedly urged members to allow normal functioning of the house. However, as the din continued, she adjourned the house till noon. The BJP had earlier signaled its intention to raise allegations by Gen Singh in parliament Monday. Party MP Prakash Javadekar said the revelations by the army chief were very serious. “The government is neckdeep in corruption…The UPA has lost the right to continue even for a day,” Javadekar told television channels.

Meet a Bihari helping poor School Children to excel Posted: 25 Mar 2012 08:46 AM PDT An Unfulfilled Dream, Scarcity of Money and a Desire to do something for others were the only companion of Vikas when he started The Rising Bihar Coaching Center (Education for All) for Poor, where students from economically backward sections are taught free of cost. Bihar may be shining high with the success of Super 30, but there are several other Anand Kumars who have taken initiatives to help the poor and talented students of Bihar , but remain unnoticed. Meet Vikas Sinha, who runs a free tuition classes for poor students in Vaishali. Accompanied by his brother Akash and few others, they prepare poor students for Class 10 Examinations without charging anything. They also have batches for junior students. “I dropped my study 3 time till my 12th education which was ruined 5 valuable years of my life. I remember having paid the tuition fee of my 10th class almost one year after passing”, quotes Vikas. Having seen the wrath of poverty, Vikas wanted to do something for the economically downtrodden students of the society. Here they got support from The Rising Bihar (TRB), – a social community active on Facebook. Gradually some of our friend Mukesh Kumar, Mukesh Sah, and Krishna Kumar associated with him and they formed a small team called TRB Vaishali. TRB Cadres helped him to setup “The Rising Bihar Coaching Center (Education for All)” on 11th November 2011 which was supposedly the National Education Day. However, they had to wait till January 2, 2012 for a formal inauguration. “Now we are giving tuition to Class 6-10 students on a very nominal fee and a Free Tuition to economically backward children”, says Vikas who has set up to pursue his dream of bringing smiles across poor children’s faces. A Police Station where Poor Students are taught Posted: 25 Mar 2012 07:18 AM PDT Delhi Police has started a special coaching facility inside the Police Station premises for economically weaker students in order to train them for competitive examinations, The centre located in the Jamia Nagar police station will provide free tutoring for competitive exams to students who cannot afford the high fees demanded by coaching centres. It is to start in May this year. “The motive behind opening of a coaching centre for the aspirants, especially Muslims, is to encourage them for competitive examinations,” Ajay Chaudhry, Additional Commissioner of Police, told IANS. “We are trying to change their assumption that they cannot get government jobs,” he added. The police station already has a library-cum-counselling centre for the aspirants which has been operational since Feb 22 and sees around 25-30 students every day. “We have been running a free-of-cost library in the premises in coordination with an NGO, Shikhar, which has been working for more than 12 years to provide better education, especially to the girls from weak minority sections,” said Chaudhry. He said the initiative was also an effort to promote trust and harmony between the police and residents of Jamia Nagar, which witnessed the 2008 Batla House shootout. On Sep 19, 2008, two alleged Indian Mujahideen members and a police officer were killed in a shootout at the Batla House. The suspected militants were said to have been involved in the Delhi serial bomb blasts on Sep 13, 2008. It has been alleged that the shootout was a stage-managed affair. “The encounter has painted a wrong picture of the police among residents here (Jamia Nagar) and we want them to open up with us and not be scared of us,” said Chaudhry. According to Nadeem Akhtar, secratary of Shikhar, the aim is also to focus on school dropouts and girls. Meanwhile, Delhi Police have provided furniture for the library where the coaching centre is to be set up, while Shikhar would take care of the expenditure. “We’ll be hiring two to three teachers to help the students in cracking the SSC (Staff Selection Commission), banking and other entrance exams,” said Chaudhry. If the response is positive, there are plans of expansion and the police may hire one or two more rooms outside the police station, said Chaudhry. The station house officer of the Jamia Nagar police station Satyavir Singh Daggar is upbeat about the idea. “The starting of the coaching centre will encourage the community and it will also act as an interface between the people and police. It will also help in building a better image of police,” Daggar told IANS. The initiative has also got a thumbs up from the Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) which has pledged its support. “We will provide as much funds as possible to support this noble initiative,” DMC Chairman Safdar H. Khan told IANS. The students visiting the library regularly were obviously gung-ho about the initiative. “I come here every day as I can read newspapers, magazines and books without spending a single rupee. If the free coaching centre comes up it will surely help me and my friends realize our dreams,” said Hemraj Kumar, 19, resident of Jamia Nagar. Abida, also a regular at the library, said: “I want to study but my parents cannot afford my education expenditure. If the coaching centre opens here, I would be the first student.”

An Indian will break my Record – Sachin Tendulkar Posted: 25 Mar 2012 07:15 AM PDT India’s batting legend Sachin Tendulkar said it would be tough to predict when and who will break his record of 100 international centuries but hoped to see an Indian surpassing it. “I don’t know. I don’t think you can predict that (whether it will be surpassed). I guess all the records are meant to be broken but I hope it’s an Indian,” said Tendulkar during a felicitation programme here to commemorate his 100th international ton that he achieved during the recently held Asia Cup. Asked about his reaction after completing his century against Bangladesh, Tendulkar said: “When I reached my 100th 100, I looked at my bat and looked at the sky and asked god what wrong did I do, why did it take so long.” Tendulkar, however, said that there were no celebrations after scoring the 100th century since India lost the match against Bangladesh. “I don’t think that we are celebrating that one match. Where I am right now took 23 years and not one match. I feel the result was very important. It was very disappointing. The day I got the hundred there was no celebration,” he said. The 38-year-old Tendulkar also said that no one should tell him when to retire. “I will play till I have the desire. I feel that when I retire is something that I would decide because when I started was not decided by someone else. Those who are advising me about retirement did not bring me in the team,” he said. Tendulkar also said that it would be selfish on his part to retire on top. “When I feel I don’t have that, on that day, I will think of retirement. I feel those who say you should retire at the top are selfish because when you are at the top, you should serve the country instead of retiring. I play for the team, not for my personal records”, said Tendulkar. Tendulkar said he was unhappy with dressing room discussions being leaked to the media. “I think what happens in the dressing room should stay in the dressing room. An Interview with Saina Nehwal Posted: 25 Mar 2012 03:17 AM PDT Saina Nehwal could not have won the Swiss Open title at a more appropriate juncture in her career. The Indian badminton champion badly and quickly needed to end her year-long title drought before the London Olympics. More importantly, she did it, breaking a Chinese code. Saina had a nightmarish 2011, losing to almost every Chinese player she ran into, and now she beat not one but two of them on her way to the title at Basel last week. Before that, she was beaten by Chinese players a staggering 11 times, four of them were handed by World No 1 Yihan Wang, who has never lost to the Indian. Worse, she recently lost to Yanjiao Jiang, ranked a rung below the Hyderabadi at six, twice and five times in all. At last, the World No 5 beat a top Chinese, World No. 3 Shixian Wang, in straight games to rediscover herself just in time to boost her medal hopes at London. Her touch seems to have returned and the strokes flowed relentlessly as she defended her title. “I would say it is a very important win for me. It has lifted my confidence a great deal and I feel my strokes are back. And it is always satisfying to beat the Chinese. I think I am peaking at the right time ahead of the Olympics,” Saina told IANS in an interview. Last year was tumultuous for the the 22-year-old Saina; nothing seemed to go right for her. She broke off from her coach Pullela Gopichand, she struggled to string her strokes and, as luck would have it, an injured ankle hattered her. But she quickly started to set her house in order, first patching up with Gopichand within three months of estrangement. The results last year may not be a true index of her effort. It was a gradual progression, a result of rigourous seven-hour sessions at the Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad. Gopichand, a former All-England Champion, is preparing Saina for the July-August Olympics, making her realise that she can do it by pushing herself a bit on all fronts. “I see a definite improvement in my game (since last year). Gopi Sir has planned a complete schedule till the Olympics. We are primarily working on speed, strength and agility. Fitness-wise, the focus is on increasing strength in my legs with a lot of weight training,” says Saina. Recalling the testing times, Saina says: “Last year, I put myself under tremendous pressure and the ankle injury did not help matters. Gopi Sir has been instrumental in getting me through the tough times, and I am glad he agreed to coach me again.” Saina, who made waves by winning three Super Series titles in 2010, says her final appearance in the prestigious World Superseries Finals (WSF) in December turned things around. “It is not that I am playing well now. Making the finals of a tournament like WSF gave me a big boost. Though I lost to Yihan, victories against the likes of Xin Wang (No.2) gave the much-needed confidence,” said Saina, implying the importance of a win against a Chinese. Five Chinese figure in the top-10 of the rankings with Denmark’s Tine Baun and German Juliane Schenk being the top Europeans at seven and eight. She has a 2-4, 1-4 head-to-head against Xin and Li Xuerui (No.4), while the only Chinese against whom Saina has an edge is against her Swiss Open final opponent Shixian (2-1). “It is always tough playing against the Chinese. And the interesting thing is that they all play differently. Yihan is the tallest among them and hence her strong point is finishing the points quickly with smashes. Since I am playing well, I want to see how I fare against her next time.” On the Chinese dominance, Saina says: “Each has a coach who has been a world or Olympic champion. That makes a lot of difference. Add to it their labour and resilience; it is an awesome package.” On Gopichand’s remark that her strokes needed variety, Saina’s take is: “What Sir meant is that I must not repeat strokes in rallies. I need to have more variety in my flicks. In women’s badminton you see a lot of long rallies, they need to be cut short, especially against the Chinese.” And amid tight training schedule, how does Saina find time to relax? “Well, even if I am watching a movie the mind is on the Olympics. I get worried thinking about London, but I guess it happens when you think of an event like the Olympics,” she said, adding that she will take “meditation classes”. With everything in place, Saina now only has to use the inputs to fortify herself to make her London fortnight worthwhile.

PM invites Korean companies to Invest in India Posted: 25 Mar 2012 02:49 AM PDT Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said today that he hoped to see many more, particularly from the medium and small sectors, setting up shop there. “I invited Korean firms to invest in India in a big way. Companies such as LG, Hyundai and Samsung are already household names in India. We would like to see small and medium sized Korean companies also making India a base for their manufacturing,” the prime minister said at a joint media interaction with South Korean President Lee Myung Bak after their talks here. “I informed President Lee that India is making a huge effort in upgrading our physical infrastructure. We want Korean companies to help us realize this objective and benefit from the opportunities provided by this,” Manmohan Singh added. He again referred to the Korean companies during his speech at a lunch hosted by President Lee. “Korean companies were among the first to repose confidence in India and we opened out economy in 1991. Many Korean brands are household names in India. “There is nevertheless, immense potential for forther economic cooperation between our two countries,” Manmohan Singh noted.

Over 10 thousand people gather as Anna Hazare Fasts Posted: 25 Mar 2012 01:44 AM PDT Over 10 thousand people gathered at the Jantar Mantar here tonday as Anna Hazare began his day-long fast to demand a stronger Lokpal bill to fight corruption. The agitation began with a short film screening on the whistleblowers who have been killed during their fight against corruption. “Bharat Mata ki Jai…Vande Mataram,” Hazare started the fast with patriotic slogans. The 72-year-old is holding the fast to demand that parliament adopt the Jan Lokpal bill with a stronger whistle-blower protection provision. Hazare said the government has failed to protect the whistleblowers in the country. “The people who are fighting against corruption and have given their lives, the government is not doing anything to protect them,” he told reporters ahead of the fast. The Jantar Mantar is where Hazare first held a mass protest for a graft bill in April 2011. Waving the tricolor and clad in khadi clothes, Hazare’s supporters shouted slogans against corruption. “We will succeed in bringing the Jan Lokpal bill. We hope to fight corruption. This movement is not just for day or so, it will go on,” said Rajesh Singh, a 24-year-old student from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. Donning ‘Anna caps’, supporters thronged the venue amid tight security arrangements by the Delhi Police. Father of slain IPS officer Narendra Kumar, who was killed in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh is also likely to visit Jantar Mantar to meet Hazare. Kumar was killed while intercepting a tractor-trolley carrying illegally-mined stones. Calling for a bigger movement, Hazare said Team Anna will travel across the country and tell people that the government’s version of the bill is “useless”. “Twenty-five people who fought against corruption were murdered. We have been stressing on protection of whistleblowers through a law but the government is not ready to do it,” Hazare said. “There will be a bigger, countrywide movement against this. The government has not even investigated into the murder of people who stood against corruption,” he added.

Anna Hazare begins his token fast at Jantar Mantar Posted: 25 Mar 2012 12:04 AM PDT Anna Hazare has arrived at Jantar Mantar for his token fast which will end at 6pm. He is joined on the stage with family members of whistleblowers, as well Team Anna members Arvind Kejriwal, Shanti Bhushan and Justice Santosh Hegde. The crowd observed two minutes silence for all the whistle blowers who lost their lives while trying to expose corruption. Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal has begun addressing the crowd at Jantar Mantar. Hitting out at the government for not protecting those who risked their lives to protect corruption Kejriwal said, "Killers of whistleblowers are roaming freely. Jan lokpal could have saved some lives". The speech was followed by the screening of a 2 minute documentary on slain whistle blowers. The Uncle of Slain IPS Officer Narendra Kumar, who was also present on the stage, said that Narendra was a patriot and he was murdered because he raised his voice against Corruption. Referring to slain IPS officer Narendra Kumar, who was killed in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh while intercepting a tractor-trolley carrying illegally-mined stones, Hazare said the government has turned a blind eye to the common man’s fight against corruption. “Twenty-five people who fought against corruption were murdered. Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. In February, Earth Hour launched its 2012 campaign, "I Will If You Will", with the intention of engaging its growing global community to go beyond the hour. It  would implement programs augmenting the scope of digital literacy and optimize the use of computers by students and teachers starting next month. Rajesh Bhushan, State Project Director, Bihar Education Project Council, said five government secondary schools will participate in the project named ‘Window to the World’. “The aim of the initiative is to reach out to students and educational stakeholders to build capacity within the state on a limited budget,” Bhushan said. Irina Ghose, Director, Education, Microsoft India, said, “With Window to the World we aim to partner with the Bihar Government to showcase how tech-enabled classrooms can increase student engagement and learning.” The pilot would also aim to provide computer aided learning opportunities for students of classes VIII- XII in government schools as well as introduce innovative platforms which will connect students and teachers from all around the world. The state government aimed at projecting Bihar as the model state for education in the country India by providing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enabled education at the secondary level, Bhushan said. Nitish Kumar was inaugurating the Bihar Centenary Celebration Functions at Gandhi Maidan on Thursday and had to stay there for over 3 hours. He  had to leave midway to use the toilet of a nearby hotel. Temporary toilets were put up at the venue but  the CM would have had to pass through the public to reach one of them.   Wasps scaring Tourists in Bihar Posted: 24 Mar 2012 01:43 AM PDT Wasp’s Sting   has become a grave problem to the Tourists in Bodh Gaya.  Over three dozen tourists, including those from Sri Lanka and Cambodia, have come under attack by wasps in the past three days.  Authorities were facing a tough time in convincing tourists to stay on in this holy town. Over three dozen tourists were injured by wasps in the last three days near Bodh Gaya. “Most of the victims of wasp attacks are Buddhist pilgrims from Sri Lanka and Combodia. They were injured when wasps attacked them on way to Gurupadgiri hill to perform worship,” said an official of the Bodh Gaya temple. A Bihar tourism department official said: “We have appealed to tourists not to fear wasp attacks in Bodh Gaya. On Bihar model, UP to videograph all its works Posted: 24 Mar 2012 01:20 AM PDT On the lines of Practices followed by Bihar Government , the newly constituted Uttar Pradesh Government has decided to videograph all its work.   The directives were issued by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Rural Development Arvind Singh ‘Gop’ to officials Friday. Asking officials to get every development activity videographed, Gop said any callousness with regards to development work in the countryside would be taken seriously and severe punitive action will be taken against officials. “I have warned the officials to get out of the old mindset and start afresh with priorities that are in sync with the promises made by the Samajwadi Party (SP) government” he told IANS Saturday. Arvind Singh ‘Gop’ further said that he would soon be travelling to rural areas and see for himself what work was going on, and whether the standards were being maintained or not. The minister also asked officials to make regular trips to villages and blocks and keep an eye on projects that were aimed at benefitting the poor. “There are a lot of projects like the MNREGA, Indira Awaas Yojna, Regular Employment Schemes etc that were tailormade for the poor and to provide them better living, but unfortunately graft has made a mess of the whole system,” Gop said, adding that “through his own system” he would keep a tab on the functioning of his officials and ensure a transparent format in the ministry.
