Bollywood Stars Celebrate Janmashtami with Dahi Handi Posted: 09 Aug 2012 05:23 PM PDT Bollywood Actors are busy celebrating Janmashtami with Dahi Handi Celebration. Stars like Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi, Esha Deol and playback singer Himesh Reshammiya, among others, are all likely to be present at a mega `dahi handi’ celebration organised by NCP leader and Minister Sachin Ahir and his wife Sangeeta at Jamboree maidan in central Mumbai. “This year we have prizes worth a crore and they are dedicated to the spirit of Mumbaikars. Besides being associated with festival, dahi handi is also a sport,” said Sangeeta. Dahi handi (pot of curd) is associated with the mythological tale of Lord Krishna’s boy-hood trick of stealing butter from a suspended earthen pot. Govindas (young men) form a human pyramid to reach the dahi handi put up at a height and try to break it in a bid to win prizes. Over 400 Govinda mandals (groups) will participate in the dahi handi event organised by Shri Sankalp Pratishthan, an NGO floated by Sachin Ahir and his wife. The visitors will be entertained with a cultural event which will see performances by well-known Marathi and Hindi cinema and stage artists like Esha Deol, Shweta Tiwari, Neha Pedse and Pushkar Jog, Sangeeta said. “The whole event will be witnessed by Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi, among others,” she said. Emraan said he was excited about taking part in the celebration, but will refrain from promoting his upcoming film ‘Raaz 3′ given the religious nature of the event. “I am really excited to be part of the celebration. I do not find it necessary to use religious events as platforms for a film’s promotion. I will be at the event as a guest and will interact with my fans,” Emraan said. Actor and acclaimed dancer Esha Deol, who got married to businessman Bharat Takhtani in June, will be performing at the event. Dahi handis are organised every year in several parts of Mumbai and Maharashtra, where prizes running into lakhs are on the offer |

Gangs of Wasseypur Part 2 Collects 2.88 Crores on its release Date Posted: 09 Aug 2012 05:04 PM PDT Gangs of Wasseypur Part 2 couldnot meet the same fate as its prequel and could collect only Rs 2.88 Crores during its opening day while Part 1 collected Rs 3.5 Crores on the debut day. This may be attributed to various movies like Kya Super Cool Hein Hum and JISM 2 running parallely. The opening was around the 30% mark on average. It opened to around 20% at many places while select multiplexes in the metros managed around 40%. The Delhi/UP circuit was a bit overall the collections are in the same range as the opening day for part 1 which also opened poorly but managed to show a bit of growth in pockets. Gurgaon was the best performing centre across India for part 1 and it is still running in its 7th week but the second part opened lower than the first one due to the first part having limited appreciattion. The non performance of part 1 at the box office which opened poorly and failed to grow much in most parts of the country has resulted in the second part getting a poor opening. The opening was better in Delhi NCR and Mumbai city and that is where the first part managed average collections. |

The test was conducted from Wheeler’s Island in Bhadrak district, around 200 km from here, at about 9 a.m. by army personnel as part of a training exercise. “It was a 100 percent success. Opposition parties in India want Bangladesh Border Fenced Posted: 09 Aug 2012 05:30 AM PDT The BJP and some other opposition parties Wednesday demanded immediate steps to complete fencing on India’s border with Bangladesh to check infiltration. Taking part in a discussion in the Rajya Sabha on the ethnic violence in Assam, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Balbir Punj said that about 50 km of the Indian border with Bangladesh had been “deliberately kept unfenced”. Punj said that illegal migration into Assam over the years had created a sense of insecurity among Assamese people. He said the Assam Accord of 1985 had entailed identification of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, creation of a national citizen register and fencing of the border. He accused the Congress of not taking enough steps to implement these. Punj said demographic changes had taken place in several districts of Assam due to infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims, who were now registering a much faster growth than Hindus in the state. He sought immediate steps to complete border fencing with Bangladesh and said that illegal immigrants should be declared “stateless people” and barred from voting and owning property. Congress member Bhubaneswar Kalita said the house should give a message to “unite” the people of state. He accused the BJP of trying to divert the issue. “You want to give colour to (it).” The MP said the Congress cannot be faulted for lapses in implementing the Assam Accord and wanted to know how many were identified as foreigners during the Assam Gana Parshad (AGP) rule. Another Congress MP, K. Rehman Khan said innocent Muslims in the state should not be troubled in the name of infiltratration. “Who is playing vote bank politics, people understand,” Rehman Khan said. He said the need was for quick relief and rehabilitation and providing security to the riot-affected people. Jharna Das Baidya of the CPI-M asked the Assam government to take concrete steps to address pending problems. Janata Dal(United) (JD-U) leader Shivanand Tiwari said infiltration was taking place in the state. “Fencing is a must,” he said. Asom Gana Parishad’s Birendra Prasad Baishya said Assam was “burning” and there was a need to “save” the state. Referring to the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act, he said Assam had a different law from other parts of the country to identify foreigners. “The main problem is the Bangladesh border (is) open.” He said his party was not against Muslims but “against illegal migrants”. Biswajit Daimary of Bodoland People’s Front said that priority should be given to complete fencing along the Bangladesh border. Shiv Sena members said their party was the first to raise the issue of illegal migration from Bangladesh. Ethnic violence in Assam last month left 73 people dead and displaced tens of thousands. Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde is expected to reply to the debate Thursday. |
Ek Tha Tiger to disappoint viewers in First Half Posted: 09 Aug 2012 04:30 AM PDT Filmmaker Kabir Khan says Salman Khan’s presence in “Ek Tha Tiger” will bring in the initial footfalls, but the film’s content and direction will sustain it thereafter. “I feel the film has stamina to run for a very long time. I hope the film goes way beyond the opening which is dependent on Salman. After that it is me and the film that I have made. I feel it has the strength to go a long way,” Kabir told IANS. “Ek Tha Tiger”, releasing Aug 15, is his third directorial venture after “Kabul Express” and “New York”. The movie, in which Salman plays a spy, also features his former lady love Katrina Kaif, making it one of the much-awaited films of the year. The first look of the film was also widely appreciated. The buzz has led several multiplexes to cash in on its popularity by reportedly hiking ticket prices 10-15 percent. But there’s little that the director can do. “That is not something that I can dictate to the multiplexes. They have said it is a standard practice they follow. When they feel a film is much-anticipated and is running during a holiday period or a festive period, they tend to mark up the price,” Kabir said. “Apparently, some time back (ticket) prices had been brought down, so the 15 percent mark up is just bringing it back to what it was three to four months back. “So I don’t think it is pumped up as much as it was done for some films a couple of years back.” |
Rajasthan to honor women who deliver Girl Child Posted: 09 Aug 2012 03:30 AM PDT A village council in Rajasthan will honour women who give birth to a girl child in their first delivery with a view to check cases of female foeticide and infanticide, officials said Wednesday. The women will be honoured at official ceremonies in the village to celebrate the Independence Day (August 15) and the Republic Day (Jan 15) every year, they added. The announcement has been made by the council of Usarani village near Kumher town in Bharatpur district, some 150 km from Jaipur. “Several cases of female foeticide and infanticide are being reported in our area. Some cases came to light when foetuses of girls are found abandoned. However, most cases go unreported. So we came up with this idea to check the evil practice,” head of village council sarpanch Sushila Singh told IANS. She said that the nurses and mid-wives in Usarani and three nearby villages have been asked to prepare a record of women who gave birth to girl children in their first delivery. “In fact, we have received the first report. A total of 46 children were born from Jan 1 to July 31 this year. Of them, 29 were girls, while 17 were boys. Of the total girl children born in the area over this period, 16 were the first children,” said Singh. She said that the 16 women will be honoured by senior politicians in the government and district administration offices on the Independence Day. The women have been assured full cooperation by the administration in taking care of their babies for a few months after their birth. “Honouring these woman would raise awareness among the villagers,” she added. The state suffers from a skewed sex ratio. According to Census 2011, Rajasthan now has 883 girls between the ages of 0-6 for every 1,000 boys. The child sex ratio in 2001 was 909. |
