Salman accompanied the injured people, two of whom were initially said to be “serious”, to the hospital. Maharashtra Mantralaya like situation in Delhi Secretariat also Posted: 23 Jun 2012 05:18 PM PDT Two days after a huge fire gutted four floors of the Maharashtra Secretariat in Mumbai, officials here said that Delhi’s 10-storey secretariat building too was found to have flouted fire safety norms. Its clearance certificate was revoked for four months from January to April this year. “Yes, the Delhi Secretariat had issues with the fire safety norms. We suspended their NOC (No-Objection Certificate). After they rectified…we re-issued it. As of now the secretariat has complied with the fire safety norms,” a Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officer, pleading anonymity, told IANS. Reacting to the fire safety issue, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told a TV channel, “We are vigilant about it.” According to the fire brigade, the ten-floor Delhi Secretariat in central Delhi, which houses the Chief Minister’s Office and other important government offices, did not adhere to many of the fire safety norms. So, the Delhi Fire Service suspended its clearance certificate and it was re-issued on May 4. The fire safety certificate was suspended for four months from January to April. “We noticed that most of the fire safety equipments like the smoke sensors were defunct, the main water pipeline in the building was not functioning…so the fire fighting equipments like sprinklers, hose drills and water hydrants could not be used, which was rectified only recently,” a DFS officer said. Fire Safety Association of India (FSAI) executive member Nikhil Krishen said: “Many government buildings, though they do fire audits, don’t implement it as it is costly. For example, the Mumbai Mantralaya had done its fire safety audits in 2008, but what is the use?” |
West Bengal CM reactivates Singur movement panel Posted: 23 Jun 2012 03:57 PM PDT West Bengal CM is in damage control mode after Kolkata High Court dismissed the Singur land acquisition Act 2011. She has convened a meeting of Krishi Jami Jibon Jibika Rakha Committee, a virtually defunct panel that had played a key role in the movement against farmland acquisition. Banerjee declined to speak to the media. However, Agriculture Minister Rabindranath Bhattacharya said the committee has decided to start afresh the movement for return of land to unwilling farmers. “Along with the legal battle, the committee will start a movement with the farmers,” Bhattacharya said. Committee representatives said they will go to Singur and renew the movement at the grass roots. Members of some Left mass organisations, civil liberty groups, and parties like the Party of Democratic Socialism, Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), the Siddiqullah Chowdhury-led People’s Democratic Conference of India, and Janata Dal-United attended the 150-minute deliberation. A resolution passed at the meeting said: “We are committed to return the land to the unwilling farmers. Proper actions would be taken to uphold the rights of the farm workers and Bargadars (sharecroppers).” PDS general secretary Samir Putatunda said: “We will carry on our movement. The movement will go on along with the legal battles.” He, however, did not elaborate. “Today we cannot say more.” Terming the land law, enacted by the West Bengal government last year to return land taken from the farmers as “unconstitutional”, a division bench of Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Justice Mrinal Kanti Chaudhuri Friday ruled sections of compensation in the legislation were in conflict with the Land Acquisition Act, 1894. State government counsel Kalyan Bandopadhyay said the government would appeal to the Supreme Court, while Banerjee reiterated her government’s commitment to return the land to the farmers. The decision caused gloom among most of the affected farmers in Singur in Hooghly district, 40 km from Kolkata. Automobile giant Tata Motors had moved a division bench against Justice I.P. Mukerji’s Sep 28 ruling that upheld the law passed by the Banerjee government soon after assuming office last year to return 400 acres to farmers. A total of 997 acres of land in Singur was leased to the Tatas by the Left Front government for the firm’s Nano small car project, along with several vendors who were to set up ancillary units at the site. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee said, on Facebook that the moral support was fueling the struggle for the cause of the farmers. “Thank you very much for your overwhelming response to my post on Singur yesterday. This has deeply touched my heart. Your moral support at this juncture is a great source of inspiration to continue our struggle for the cause of farmers,” wrote Banerjee in response to her Friday’s post which received 1,133 comments and nearly 1,800 likes. |

The Film has grossed high in Bihar, UP and Jharkhand, in addition to drawing crowds in Multiplexes of Metros. The Hindu calls this movie, Part Time Avengers. The movie is based on the themeline, “ A man must avenge the death of his father, but he whiles away his time making babies“. No doubt, the movie scored more than 3 Crore Rupees on the very day of its Release Prashant Kumar Singh, owner of Puja Talkies in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, told IANS: “‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ has opened very well with 80 to 85 percent occupancy. Some of the shows were even houseful. The film is going great and even the advance booking is going on full swing.“ Bihar-based Brijesh Tandon of HK Tandon and Company said, “Gangs Of Wasseypur has opened very well in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It is around 80 percent occupancy.” Written by Zeishan Quadri, who hails from Wasseypur, known for the bloody rivalry between gangster Faheem Khan and businessman Sabir Alam over scrap business, the film is described as a cinematic offering that has hurled audiences right into the notorious anarchy of the North Indian small-town where the barrel of the gun speaks an irresistible language of mayhem by a reviewer. Directed by Kashyap, it has too much of gore and blood and it is believed that violence on this level has never really been a part of mainstream Hindi cinema before. Despite that the audiences are thronging the cinema hall to see this blood saga. Delhi-base distributor Sanjay Ghai said: ” ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ has opened with 70 to 80 percent opening in both single screens and multiplex in Delhi and is going great.” In Mumbai, the response was slow but, according to distributor Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combine, “‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ opened with 20 to 25 percent in Mumbai. But it has started improving from the evening shows and would pick up in the night and at the weekend.” Manoj Gupta of Viacom 18 said: “In Varanasi, the opening was around 70 to 80 percent but the afternoon shows went houseful in Lucknow, Gorakhpur among others. Even the multiplex shows of ‘Gangs…’ are houseful.” Kashyap, who co-produced the film with Sunil Bohra, has said that it is his most expensive film and he reportedly had to spend Rs 15 crore on paying the actors. Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadha, Huma Quershi, Reema Sen and Piyush Mishra’s have stepped into thier roles convincingly and their powerful performances have made this real life-based story into a compelling cinema and it is wooing audiences in Kolkata too. ” ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ has opened with 45 to 50 percent occupancy in Kolkata and is getting better with the evening shows,” said Moni Venkatesh of Shri Venkatesh Films. |

Little Girl Mahi still stuck inside 70ft Borewell Posted: 23 Jun 2012 09:30 AM PDT More than 60 hours after four-year-old Mahi fell into a 70-feet-deep borewell in a Manesar village in Haryana in the foothills of the Aravali ranges, hopes of her survival grew dimmer, even as the army and the police are racing against time to rescue the trapped girl. Rescue teams had no idea still how deep she has fallen. Indian Army engineers from Delhi and National Security Guard commandos, who are based in Manesar, were trying to rescue the child. The accident drew nationwide attention after wide coverage on TV. According to Chief Medical Officer Praveen Garg, the supply of oxygen was being provided through a pipe to Mahi, although there was no word about her condition. The incident came six years after a similar dramatic rescue of five- year-old boy called Prince, who was saved 50 hours after falling into a 60-feet pit near Kurukshetra in Haryana, an event that was followed live on national television. Ground Penetrating Radar System (GPRS) were called to assist the rescue team Friday. The gap between both the bores is about 8 feet. While digging the tunnel to reach the child, from newbore to borewell, a large piece of stone had became a barrier. Due to that, the rescue team missed the goal Friday. An another tunnel was dug Saturday, the rescue team was facing the same problem. This time instead of cutting the stones by hands they were using hand cutter drill machine, an official further added. If the current efforts fails then a fresh parallel bore would be needed, said an official. Rescue personnel inside the tunnel carrying oxygen pipes with them were hardly able to stay for more than 5 to 10 minutes in the tunnel at a stretch. Rohtash Singh, the owner of the land where Mahi slipped and fell, has been charged but is absconding, DCP (South) Praveen Mehta told IANS. Mahi slipped into a borewell near Manesar’s Industrial Model Township (IMT) on National Highway-8, when her family was celebrating her birthday, around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Mahi is the daughter of Niraj Uppadhyay, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district. Niraj is a security supervisor at a factory in Manesar and was living in Kasan village with his wife Sonia and two-year old daughter. |
Pranab Mukherjee to quit Finance Ministry on June 26 Posted: 23 Jun 2012 08:30 AM PDT Noting that his four-decade-long involvement in party politics was coming to an end, UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee Saturday announced he would quit as finance minister June 26. He also sought to reach out to the Trinamool Congress, appealing for all undecided parties to support his candidature. “Except one, all parties which are partners of the government, are supporting me. Those giving outside support to the government like the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, have also supported me,” he said outside his South Kolkata residence. Noting that parties not associated with the UPA, like the Communist Party of India-Marxist, the All India Forward Bloc, the Janata Dal-United and the Shiv Sena, also have backed him, Mukherjee reiterated his appeal to all undecided parties to extend their support to him for the top job. “Those who are yet to take a decision, I request them to support the UPA nominee,” said Mukherjee. The Trinamool, second largest constituent of the UPA, is yet to announce its stand on the presidential choice after its preferred candidate, former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, declined to contest. However, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee has so far been firmly opposing Mukherjee’s bid for the country’s presidency. Earlier, speaking to reporters at his ancestral village Mirati in Birbhum district, Mukherjee said he would quit his central government and the Congress party posts. “I have been in politics for a long time. After becoming a presidential election candidate, I won’t have any party, I will not be in politics. This is a constitutional tradition,” he said. “I will relieve myself of the post of finance minister on June 26. I could not take such a decision earlier because the prime minister (Manmohan Singh) was out of the country. I have to perform some duties in the prime minister’s absence,” said the veteran politician, considered the number two in the UPA government and its chief trouble shooter. Mukherjee would return to Delhi Sunday evening. “Then I will put in my papers. I am still a Congressman and a member of its highest policy making body – the Working Committee. I will send my resignation from this post also to the Congress president (Sonia Gandhi). I shall then start my campaign.” “A big chapter in my four-decade old involvement in party politics has ended,” said the 76-year-old leader. Mukherjee is pitted against former Lok Sabha speaker Purno A. Sangma, who has the backing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and some constituents of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as also the AIADMK and the Biju Janata Dal. |
