Amitabh and Saif become students of Super 30 founder Anand Kumar Posted: 02 Aug 2011 09:24 PM PDT Amitabh Bachhan and Saif Ali Khan have learnt teaching skills in mathematics from Bihar’s Super 30 founder Anand Kumar. Bollywood director Prakash Jha, whose recent movie ‘Aarakshan’ revolves around the subject of education, had sought Anand’s help in imparting teaching skills to Big B and Saif. The math wizard shot a video at Jha’s office in Mumbai. Anand conducted three to four simulated classes at Jha’s office over a period of two days in December last year. In the film, Big B plays the role of Prabhakar Anand, who is the principal of a college which does not abide by the government’s regulations on caste-based reservation. Moved by the plight of poor children, Amitabh Bachchan, in the film, decides to coach students from underprivileged background in his free time. Saif Ali Khan also teaches at this school.

Supreme Curt stays the construction of 1000 MW thermal power plant in Bihar Posted: 02 Aug 2011 09:22 PM PDT The Apex court stayed the Rs5,000 crore tender of the country's largest power producer NTPC for a cooling tower at its Nabinagar plant on the petition of Paharpur Cooling Towers. The 4 X 250 mw thermal power project, coming up in Aurangabad district of Bihar, is a joint venture between Bhartiya Rail Bijlee Co Ltd, a subsidiary of NTPC, and the Indian Railways. Bhartiya Rail Bijlee holds 74% stake in the JV, while the rest is held by Indian Railways. A bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph stayed the tender — awarded to Lanco Infratech — till September 7. It also asked state-owned NTPC to file a reply on the allegations of Paharpur Cooling Towers that it was wrongly eliminated from the tendering process. Bids for IDCT were invited in August 2008. Paharpur's lawyer Mukul Rohatagi said NTPC awarded the tender for Induced Draft Cooling Tower (IDCT) in violation of the terms and conditions of the tender agreement. According to the conditions, the bidder must have experience in designing, constructing and commissioning of IDCT or any of their associate, who was participating in the bid. However, Lanco was banking on Encon Services Ltd — recently amalgamated with Lanco — which had completed projects for Korea Heavy Industries and Construction Co Ltd. Moreover, it has got it designed from Shriram Tower Tech Ltd, its counsel said. Rohtagi said the difference between the bids of Lanco and Paharpur was only Rs4 crore, and Paharpur was ready to supply at that price with its vast experience in the sector. NTPC lawyer Vikas Singh contested his arguments saying Paharpur was just obstructing the plant. "Paharapur was aware from January 2010 that they have been disqualified and kept waiting and approached the court a year later," Singh, a former additional solicitor general like Rohtagi, said. He said stay at this stage would delay the Nabinagar project. However, the apex court said, "When you have waited for this tender from 2008 and you can wait for even some more time and stayed the project". Lanco's lawyer Jayant Bhushan also tried to persuade the court that the company be allowed to start the preparatory work for construction of IDCT. "We would have to see first whether you have the required expertise or not. These are very critical and important power projects," the court told him. IITians working to enahnce PDS in Bihar Posted: 02 Aug 2011 09:19 PM PDT Four Chennai-based IITians lived in various isolated villages in the state and across the country, eating ration rice with villagers, taking part in protests with the public, inspecting PDS stores and meeting civil supplies officers to discuss complaints from ration card-holders as part of a survey for The Right to Food. After their sojourn, Binny Alexander, Samyutka Kannan, Preshant Sekar and Manish Kumar, all 20 years old, informed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about the PDS situation at the ground level in the most backward districts of the country like Dindugul and Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu, Nalanda in Bihar, and areas in Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh. They informed the prime minister about the desperate need for uninterrupted PDS supplies by families in villages in all parts of the country and said that the people would be thankful if millets and vegetables were also provided in ration shops. Samyutka and Preshant walked through remote hamlets and found out that rich families drew PDS rice to use as chicken feed. "Poor families have to make do with 35 kg of rice for the entire month and the rich feed it to their chickens. "People are surprised that they receive fresh and good-quality stock during the first month after the election. They will be happy if the same kind of ration is provided throughout the year," they observed. Apart from taking surveys in Jharkhand, Binny protested against lapses in rations along with other villagers. "The angry public complained that they were served rations based on outdated BPL rules framed before the bifurcation of Bihar. They had got rations for only five months last year. I supported them and spoke to the government officers there," he said.
