First Microsoft Dreamspark Yatra in Bihar

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 06:18 PM PDT

Dream Spark Yatra (DSY) is a Microsoft India initiative, empowering students who are passionate about technology to get an insightful overview of the current trends in the software industry. This was the second time I delivered a technical talk at DSY. My first talk at DSY was on "Application development for Windows Phone 7" in Bangalore.clip_image004

DSYs are special for both the attendees (students) and Microsoft. They are special because of the in-depth talks on the latest technologies and the sheer number of attendees, which is usually over a thousand.
Although Bihar has produced several engineering stalwarts in the past, there were very few engineering colleges of national repute. These days, however, students no longer have to leave the state to receive a high quality education.
In Patna itself, three engineering colleges, IIT, BIT and NIT, have come into existence. However, until now, a connection with Microsoft was still missing.

DSY at BIT, Patna was even more special because it happened for the first time in this part of the country. Over 1000 engineering students from IIT, BIT and NIT participated in this mega event.clip_image010

Microsoft's direct connection sparked a new zeal and passion for technology amongst the participants. Their enthusiasm and the glow in their eyes after the session deliveries provided a truly rewarding experience for all the speakers.
Dr. Janak Pandey, Vice Chancellor, Central University of Bihar and Mrs. Smita Pallavi, research fellow at BIT Patna, enlightened everyone with their keynotes and inaugural talks. Then followed the full day core tech talks:
i. "Microsoft Robotics developer studio" & "Windows Embedded" delivered by Ujjwal, Partner Consultant, Microsoft
ii. "XNA based game design" delivered by Vignesh (4th year engineering student, Amity college of Engineering, Noida & national level finalist at Microsoft Imagine Cup, 2010)
iii. "WebMatrix" by Vishal Gupta (Alumni, BIT Meshra, Ranchi)
Devesh (Microsoft Student Partner – MSP) and Pooja managed the stage, while Rashmi & Abhishek managed the back stage and took care of the audience throughout the day. All of them are BIT Patna engineering students and their contribution was par excellence with full passion, dedication & professionalism.clip_image024

Bihar story on women in panchayat bodies

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 04:33 AM PDT

PATNA: When Bihar in 2006 provided for 50% reservation to women in panchayat bodies, it was touted as a silent revolution by chief minister Nitish Kumar. The silent revolution that saw the fair sex capturing half of the 2.6 lakh seats in states panchayat bodies, is deafening now.

While it was a dream come true for the lakh and odd women, it was empowerment of a new kind for half of the states 10.38 crore population, desperate to have a say in the governance. The result was a pleasant surprise: women outnumbered men when it came to voting in 2010 assembly elections; 54.85% women voted as against 50.7% men. The turnout of women was as high as 60% in nine of the states 38 districts.

A record 34 women made it to the 243-strong state legislative assembly. Among them was Jyoti Devi, an unschooled Musahar (the poorest community among dalits). “It was the result of the process of empowerment at the panchayat level that a poor woman like me was fielded by ruling JD-U from Gaya’s Barachatti,” she said.

Beena Devi of Nawada’s Loharpura panchayat feels panchayats are serving as nurseries for women leaders in new Bihar. “Women are as competent as men,” the Loharpura mukhiya told TOI and proudly added she was adjudged one of the best mukhiyas in the country by the Union panchayati raj ministry.

Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi agrees with Beena. `Its a common perception that women are more capable and less corrupt than men,” he said and added the reservation policy has completely changed the profile of rural society as women are now helming the village administration.

But throwing off male dominance was not a smooth affair for many. Take, for instance, the case of Uma Devi who paid a heavy price for refusing to withdraw from the contest in the 2006 election in Jamui district’s Islampur panchayat. Goons of a criminal don tore open her one-year-old daughters belly and took away the two other kids and slaughtered them.

In many panchayats, men have adopted a somewhat novel method to stick to power. They fielded wives in the election, and are now content with calling the shots as an MP or SP; that is `Mukhiya Pati’ or `Sarpanch Pati’.

CM Kumar has also heard of such MPs and SPs who forcibly sit in official meetings and dictate orders on behalf of their spouses. The administration has been directed to keep these de facto functionaries away from panchayat meetings. “It will take some time for this kind of democracy to mature in Bihar,” said Modi

Tenders for new power units to be floated soon

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 12:14 AM PDT

PATNA: Bihar government would soon be floating competitive tariff-based tenders for new power plants to meet domestic and commercial requirements.

“We have decided to soon float tenders which will be competitive tariff-based for raising new power units,” Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said.

“We have given thrust on giving opportunity to companies which would offer cheapest power. We want to become self-reliant in electricity,” he added.

Blaming the Centre for its alleged apathy towards meeting the energy needs of the state, he said, the state had projected the need of 4500 MW against which the Centre allocated not more than 1600 MW – 1700 MW.

However, he added that his government has comprehensive plans to tackle the power problem.

The chief minister claimed several power projects with an investment of Rs one lakh crore were in the pipeline and alleged that the Centre was not providing coal linkages of the proposed power projects.

Kumar has directed the state energy department to purchase transformers to ensure replacement of damaged ones in rural areas within 72 hours and those in urban areas within 24 hours.

The state government has decided to provide Rs 100 crore to the energy department for purchase of transformers in adequate numbers, he said.

Kumar, later, laid the foundation stone for the Rs 613 crore ‘Vardhaman Ayur Vigyan Sansthan’ at Pawapuri in Nalanda district, the place of lord Mahapari Niravan.

With the proposed International University at Nalanda and medical college and hospital at Pawapuri, Nalanda would once again become the centre of knowledge, Kumar said.

Bhojpuri KBC with Shotgun soon

Posted: 17 Apr 2011 10:11 PM PDT

Shatrughan Sinha will soon be making his second appearance on TV. The actor-politician was in the city on Tuesday for the dry run and rehearsal of his version of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). The show is being produced for the Mahua Bhojpuri channel. Sinha has stepped into colleague Amitabh Bachchan's

shoes to promote Bhojpuri, a language spoken in parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Yubaraj Bhattacharya from the channel Mahua confirms the news: "Shatruji has been rehearsing for the show. He is putting his heart and soul into it. He was our first and ultimate choice for the host."

Sinha has, in the past, judged a season of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge on Star One, and appeared as a guest contestant on 10 Ka Dum on Sony Entertainment.

However, this show of his will go on air on the channel from May 30, months before Amitabh Bachchan takes charge of the Hindi version on Sony Entertainment.

Buzz is that the latter goes on air closer to the superstar host's birthday in October. The channel is currently researching the various versions of the original, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, to upgrade the fifth edition of the Hindi show.

Bachchan has signed a multiple season deal with Kaun Banega Crorepati, and the season that finished in Decemeber last year was the first of the three he will be seen in.

Like his yesteryear colleague, has Shatrughan Sinha, too, been signed on for another season? "Yes," says Bhattacharya. "He will be an amazing host, because of his command over the language. The audience is familiar with the format and he has a superb fan following too. We're quite sure the show's first season will do well."
