Fear of Childbirth causes prolonged Labor in Woman

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 06:14 PM PDT

Women who fear childbirth tend to have longer labour than women who have no such fear, suggests a new research.

Researchers found that average labour duration was eight hours for women with fear of childbirth, compared to six hours and 28 minutes for women without fear.

The Norwegian study looked at 2,206 women with a single pregnancy who intended to deliver vaginally. Study co-author Samantha Salvesen Adams, Health Services Research Centre, Akershus University Hospital, University of Oslo, Norway said: “Fear of childbirth seems to be an increasingly important issue in obstetric care.”

“Our finding of longer duration of labour in women who fear childbirth is a new piece in the puzzle within this intersection between psychology and obstetrics,” added Adams, the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology reports.

Some of the factors linked with this fear, which affects between five and 20 percent of pregnant women, include young maternal age, being a first-time mother, pre-existing psychological problems, lack of social support and a history of abuse or adverse obstetric events, according to a Akershus statement.

Fear of childbirth was assessed by the Wijma Delivery Expectancy Questionnaire (W-DEQ). Women undertook the questionnaire at 32 weeks gestation and fear of childbirth was defined as a score of more than 85. Out of the total number, 165 (7.5 percent) women scored more than 85.

The average age of the participants at delivery was 30.9 years and 50.5 percent (1,113 women) were first time mothers. Average labour duration was 8.22 hours for first-time mothers.

The study also found that women with fear of childbirth more often delivered by instrumental vaginal delivery (17.0 percent versus 10.6 percent) or emergency caesarean delivery (10.9 percent versus 6.8 percent) as compared to women without fear of childbirth.

A 160-man contingent of India’s Assam Rifles Wednesday left for the Caribbean nation of Haiti on a year-long deployment under the United Nations’ stabilisation mission that has been functioning there since 2004.

This is the third Assam Rifles contingent to be deployed in Haiti, according to a Home Ministry release. It includes 10 officers.

The contingent, led by Commandant R.C. Kothari, was flagged off by Assam Rifles officiating director general Major General R.K. Lakhanpaul.

The Indian government had sanctioned the services of Assam Rifles in Haiti for five years from 2010, with a contingent sent in rotation every year.

The first contingent had gone to Haiti in 2010 and was awarded with an unit citation from UN Police Commissioner and Indian Ambassador to Cuba, Dominican Republic and Haiti.

The force will be serving the UN mandate to restore a secure and stable environment in Haiti in order to promote a political process for strengthening Haiti’s government institutions and rule of law.

Besides India, 41 other countries have deployed their personnel for UN operations in Haiti.

Haiti had suffered a severe earth quake in 2010 in which 2.2 lakh persons including 160 UN peacekeepers had lost their lives. The reconstruction work is still going on for which UN is playing a major role.

Kya Super Cool hein Hum no fit for Children says Tusshar Kapoor

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 03:54 PM PDT

Kya Super Kool Hai Hum Wallpapers“Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum” is a complete no-no for children, says actor Tusshar Kapoor who will be seen in the adult comedy.

“Kids cannot see this film. Teenagers can see it,” he said and added that though the film will have an A-certificate, it won’t affect its box office performance.

The film is also featuring   Riteish Deshmukh, written and directed by Sachin Yardi, produced by Shobha Kapoor & Ekta Kapoor, and expected to hit theaters at August 2,  2012

Talking about the sexual innuendoes and jokes in the film, he said that the genre has become cool and trendy.

Apart from Tusshar, the film, didrected by Sachin Yardi, also stars Riteish Deshmukh, Neha Sharma and Sarah Jane Dias and has been produced by his sister, Ekta Kapoor.

The story revolves around the friendship between the male leads and how circumstances lead them to venture on a mad road trip to Goa in pursuit/search of Love. Once in Goa, more characters emerge on the scene as comic mayhem unfolds. The protagonists hilariously maneuver their way through tricky situations of mistaken identities and misunderstandings. The much-in-the-news sequel promises unparalleled fun & frolic, ensuring that the audience too, back-packs on this 'Kool' road-trip!

Release Date: July 27, 2012

Budget: Rs 14 Crores (The film has already sold for RS 21.6 crore)

Actors: Tusshar Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Neha Sharma, Sara Jane Dias, Chunky Pandey, Anupam Kher
“When ‘Kyaa Kool Hai Hum’ became a super hit, I felt that it would have been bigger had the family audience would have seen it. Everyone saw it, the ladies went with their friends and the men went with theirs. But people didn’t go with their families. But now society has really changed,” he told IANS.

“We had a narration and we toned it down, but everyone said that it was good but not as good as the previous one. So then we brought back all the jokes and the naughty humour,” he added.

“Kyaa Super Cool Hai Hum”, is being released seven years after Sangeeth Sivan directed “Kyaa Kool Hai Hum”, which was released in 2005.

“We are lucky that no film of this kind came in between. ‘Housefulls’ have come, Golmaals have come, but they are a comedy of a different kind. This is an adult comedy,” the actor says.

Why the gap?

“There were a lot of problems, Sangeeth wanted to do other kinds of films. He said he was not only a comedy director so he wanted to make some actioners and thrillers. When he was ready, Ekta was not ok with the script.

“Finally, Sachin came up with a script for a film called “Road Trip To Anjuna”. But we liked it so much, Ekta decided to convert it into “Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum” and make it a two hero film,” he said.

Tharoor vouches for a hold on Service Tax on NRI Remittances

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 02:43 PM PDT

Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to put on hold the service tax on remittances by non-resident Indians (NRIs).

In his letter to the prime minister Wednesday, Tharoor pointed out that the decision to impose 12.36 per cent service tax on remittances to India by NRIs with effect from July 1 has generated tremendous resentment across Kerala.

“The imposition of the service tax will adversely affect millions of Keralities, especially those working in low-paid jobs in the Gulf region. This tax of Rs.1,236 for every Rs.10,000 sent home will be an unbearable burden on these ordinary people… and their dependent families at home,” he said.

He called for keeping the decision in abeyance pending a more detailed examination of the “adverse implications” of the move.

Tharoor argued that this was a short-sighted measure which risked diverting remittances to hawala channels and tempting otherwise law-abiding citizens to indulge in undesirable malpractices.

“At a time when the country needs to attract inward remittances and investment, any measure which discourages these should not be contemplated,” he said in the letter.

According to the latest study by the Centre for Development Studies, the total remittances in Kerala in 2011 was estimated at Rs.49,695 crore compared to Rs.43,288 crore in 2008.

The study also revealed that the number of Kerala emigrants living abroad in 2011 was estimated at 2.28 million, up from 2.19 million in 2008.

Super 30 Founder slam IIT Council Decision of new Entrance Pattern

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 01:30 PM PDT

IIT Council’s move to give 20 percent weightage to Class 12 board marks is a hasty decision, Anand Kumar, founder of ‘Super 30′, which provides free coaching to Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) aspirants, said on Wednesday.

“This decision will go against poor students, who do not get the opportunity to study in elite schools,” he said here.

“Even Class 12 results are mired in controversy due to use of unfair means in examinations and manipulation to ensure good results,” said Kumar, who coaches students from poor families to crack the IIT entrance test.

He said the decision had come as a dampener for students preparing for IIT-JEE.

“Suddenly they realise that school results are also important. The IIT Council should have implemented it from 2014 at least to give the students time,” he said.

Pakistan releases 311 Indian Prisoners in a Single Day

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 12:47 PM PDT

Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh’s fate may have plunged into further uncertainity, but India still has some reason to cheer. Pakistan Wednesday freed 311 Indian fishermen from prison.

Officials of Karachi’s District Malir jail said, 311 Indian prisoners were released at 8 a.m. after completing their sentences.

They were sent to Wagah border where they will be handed over to Indian authorities, Geo TV reported.

The prisoners, include 21 juveniles, lodged in Youthful Offenders’ School in Karachi. The adult prisoners were held at Malir jail.

A total of 127 Indian prisoners still remain in Malir jail.

India Wednesday renewed its request to Pakistan to release Sarabjit.

On Tuesday, the Pakistani media had carried reports of Sarabjit getting a presidential pardon. However, Islamabad clarified that it was not Sarabjit but Surjeet Singh, his fellow inmate at Kot Lakhpat jail, who would be released.

Sarabjit has been in custody for over two decades and is serving a death sentence for his alleged involvement in a string of blasts in the Punjab province in 1990.

Nearly 50 Million Indian using Mobile Number Portability

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 12:19 PM PDT

The total number of subscribers opting for mobile number portability (MNP) has risen to 45.89 million, with Karnataka receiving the maximum number of 5.11 million requests till the end of April, according to official data released Wednesday.

MNP allows users to switch operators while retaining their mobile numbers.

“By the end of April 2012, about 45.89 million subscribers have submitted their requests to different service providers for porting their mobile number,” the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in a statement.

Karnataka was followed by Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat where 4.44 million and 4.23 million subscribers opted for the service.

MNP was implemented across the country last January while the pilot launch of the service took place in Haryana Nov 25, 2010.

To opt for MNP, a customer has to pay a maximum of Rs.19 to the new operator for ‘porting’ the number and remain with the new operator for at least three months.

The customer has to send an SMS from the existing phone to 1900. A unique porting code is sent by the existing provider. An application then has to be filed with the new service provider mentioning the code for transferring the connection.

India currently has over 920 million mobile phone subscribers.

Hundreds of junior doctors of the PMCH were on strike after relatives of some patients manhandled their colleagues on duty. The inident led to doctors going on strike and also putting up demands like introduction of junior residency scheme and proper management of hospitals.

The state government last Monday raised the stipend of the junior doctors from Rs.25,000 to Rs.30,000, and this led to the medicos calling off their strike, officials of the health department said.

The junior doctors of Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in Patna and Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital who were also on strike in support of their PMCH colleagues are now likely to end their strike soon.

Sarabjit Singh’s Family suffer Terrible blow due to Pakistan U-Turn

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 11:11 AM PDT

sarabjit singhAfter Pakistan made a U-turn from its statement of release of Indian Prisoner Sarabjit Singh, his Family members suffered a severe blow in the light of momentary happiness. Once the news spread out, people started Celebration in  Bhikhiwind village. But this was momentous as Late Night Pakistani Authorities made another conflicting statement that it was not Sarabjit Singh but Surjeet Singh who is being released.

Family members and friends, who had only hours earlier distributed sweets, were stunned at the sudden turn of events. However, the Role of Internal Politics of Pakistan Cannot be denied in the Series of Events Last Night.
“We are shocked by this. We are disappointed and shattered. But we will not give up hope on getting Sarabjit released. We will continue to fight for him. By doing this, Pakistan is playing with our sentiments,” Sarabjit’s elder sister Dalbir Kaur said in Jalandhar.

Dalbir Kaur, who has been single-handedly spearheading the campaign with authorities in Pakistan and India to seek his release, said the turn of events in the past few hours was a “cruel joke” on the family.

“I don’t understand why and how this has happened. It is terrible for us. But we will not give up our fight. We have been deeply hurt by this,” Dalbir Kaur, who is staying here with relatives, said.

“We feel cheated by this. It is a cruel joke on the family and millions of people who were praying for Sarabjit’s release. We appeal to the Pakistani and Indian governments to work out his release.”

In their village Bhikhiwind, along the India-Pakistan international border about 280 km from the state capital Chandigarh, people gathered at Sarabjit’s family home to sympathise with them. Family members and residents who had burst firecrackers Tuesday evening were reeling from the shock.

“We still have faith that he will be released. We feel cheated by this turn of events,” Poonam, Sarabjit’s younger daughter, said in Bhikhiwind, about 130 km from here. Sarabjit’s wife Sukhpreet also lives in the village.

Hours after first reports came in that Pakistan was to free Sarabjit Singh, Islamabad late Tuesday clarified that not Sarabjit Singh but another Indian prisoner named Surjeet Singh, who has been in jail for three decades, would be released instead.

The clarification came about 1 a.m. with President Asif Ali Zardari’s spokesperson saying that Surjeet Singh would be released instead of Sarabjit.

“I think there is some confusion. First, it is not a case of pardon. More importantly, it is not Sarabjit. It is Surjeet Singh, son of Sucha Singh. His death sentence was commuted in 1989 by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan on the advice of then prime minister Benazir Bhutto,” presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar was quoted as saying by Geo News.

Law Minister Farooq Naek Tuesday conveyed to the interior ministry that Surjeet Singh had completed his life term in jail and ought to be released and sent back to India, Babar said.

Earlier in the day, media reports said Zardari had converted Sarabjit Singh’s death sentence to life imprisonment and directed authorities to release him if he had completed his prison term.

Sarabjit Singh’s family claim that he had crossed into Pakistan inadvertently in August 1990 in an inebriated state and was arrested there.

But Pakistani police say Sarabjit Singh, who is known as Manjit Singh there, was involved in acts of terrorism. Sarabjit has been languishing in Pakistani jails since then.

He was convicted of staging four bombings in Lahore and Multan in 1990 that killed at least 14 people.

Rajesh Khanna to be discharged from Lilavati Hospital in few Days

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 05:55 PM PDT

Yesteryears superstar Rajesh Khanna is much better but would have to stay in the hospital for ‘a couple of days’, said his estranged wife, actress Dimple Kapadia, who is taking care of him.

The 69-year-old actor, who was not keeping well of late, was hospitalised due to “exhaustion and weakness.”

“He is much better today (Tuesday). He is not getting discharged today. He will be back home in a couple of days,” Dimple told IANS. But his recovery will perhaps take more time.

Khanna’s manager Ashwin had said earlier this week that the actor had stopped taking food for three-four days though he was at home.

Soon after, Kaka, as the actor is fondly referred to in the industry, emerged at the balcony of his house Aashirwad on Carter Road in suburban Bandra to wave at his fans and media persons.

His son-in-law, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, assured media that Khanna was “hearty and healthy,” but the senior actor was admitted to the hospital two days later.

Earlier in April too the actor was admitted to the hospital after he complained of uneasiness and exhaustion.

In April, the actor was admitted to hospital after he felt uneasy and weak, and was discharged after about three days.

Fondly called ‘Kaka’ by his fans, his golden era started with the 1969 blockbuster ‘Aaradhana’, which was followed by hits like ‘Do Raaste’, ‘Safar’, ‘Kati Patang’ and ‘Anand’.

In 1973, he married Dimple and has two daughters with her – Twinkle and Rinke. They separated in 1984.

Their elder daughter Twinkle is married to Akshay Kumar and Rinke is married to London-based investment banker Samir Saran.

After staying away from the limelight for years, Rajesh Khanna recently featured in Havell’s fan new ad campaign called – Havells Fans Forever.

Surjeet Singh from Punjab to be released from Pakistan Jail

Law Minister Farooq Naek Tuesday conveyed to the interior ministry that Surjeet Singh had completed his life term in jail and ought to be released and sent back to India, Babar said.

Keeping him in jail any longer will be illegal confinement, he said.

Any references to President Asif Ali Zardari in the entire matter were “out of context”, the presidential spokesman said.

Surjeet Singh, currently being held in Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, has been in Pakistani captivity for over 30 years. He was captured near the border with India on charges of spying during the era of military ruler Zia-ul-Haq.

Earlier in the day, media reports said Zardari had converted Sarabjit Singh’s death sentence to life imprisonment and directed authorities to release him if he had completed his prison term.

Students in Kolkata develop oxygen saving device

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 04:02 PM PDT

Three students of a Howrah engineering college claim to have designed a device which reduces wastage of oxygen during ventilation and acts as a non-invasive ventilator.

The device, named Oxy-Con (oxygen control), has been developed by Nilanjan Ghosh with help of Dipayan Jash and Akram Ali, all third-year students at MCKV Institute of Engineering (MCKIVE), college officials said Tuesday.

The device can bring down the cost for an hour’s continuous oxygen supply from Rs.50 to Rs.17, said Ghosh.

“The ratio between inhaling and exhaling is 1:2, which means the total inspiration time is just 20 seconds. As such, the effective oxygen per minute is just 20 seconds while the wastage is 40 seconds,” he said.

“The Oxy-Con, which pauses during expiration, will help save a large amount of oxygen for a patient on ventilation,” Ghosh said.

He said the device could foretell when the gas pressure would reach less than four kg which was the time for cylinder replacement.

Ghosh said he got the idea to develop the device from his father, a medical researcher.

He said the device could supply oxygen as per the patient’s requirement.

The device could be used at home, nursing homes or rehabilitation institutions on patients with chronic breathing ailments or illnesses that require long-term ventilator assistance, he said.

“Hundreds of patients fail to get positive support in health care system in our country. This low-cost device will help those below the poverty line,” said A.K. Sanyal, medical director, Ruby General Hospital.

“We plan to send this device to various hospitals and the market,” said K.K. Kejriwal, the college’s managing trustee.

Railways to again hike Passenger Fares in July

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 10:04 AM PDT

Indian RailwaysCome July and Travelling in Trains would be costly. The Fares of AC and First Class is going to be hiked by 3.6 Percent indicating an end of Mamata Bannerjee’s effect on Railways.

It is said that finance Ministry is not willing to extend the Service Tax Subsidy to Railways.  The sources said railway minister Mukul Roy had written a letter to finance minister Pranab Mukherjee last week requesting exemption for railways from paying service tax, but the request has gone unheeded so far.
While the railway board is believed to be finalising the modalities for increase in fares, they said a fresh request has been made by the board today to the finance ministry for a review.

The hike would put an additional burden on travellers on AC classes. Fares in AC-I and AC-II was increased by about 20% in this year’s Rail Budget.

Service tax on passenger travel and freight was introduced in the general budget for 2009-10, but was kept on hold due to the then railway minister Mamata Banerjee’s opposition.

The exemption has been extended since then on quarterly basis but this time the Finance Ministry has decided to exclude freight charges and AC rail travel from the negative list, which gets service tax exemption.

With freight and passenger fares enjoying a 70% subsidy, the impact on the increase in freight charges and fares of First Class and AC-I, AC-II and AC-III will be 3.6%.

The raid was conducted after an NGO told police that a minor girl who was missing from West Bengal was confined at a brothel.

Bihari Engineer’s Wife asks CM to intervene in her Husband’s arrest

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 08:58 AM PDT

The wife of Bihar engineer Fasih Mehmood, who has been missing since he was allegedly arrested in Saudi Arabia and deported to India, Tuesday questioned the “silence” of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the central government’s failure to trace him.
“I fail to understand Nitish Kumar’s silence on the issue and his reluctance to give us an assurance of help to trace my husband,” Nikhat Parveen told newspersons here after submitting a memorandum to the state governor.

She said the chief minister should have raised the issue of her husband, who is from Bihar. “It appears to me that he has no time for this genuine issue.”

Parveen said she would request the president, the prime minister and the chief justice of the Supreme Court to help in tracing her missing husband.

She said she had full faith in the apex court before which she filed a plea in this regard.

The apex court earlier this month issued notice to the home and external affairs ministries over the disappearance of Mehmood.

The 35-year-old engineer, who hails from a village in Darbhanga district, was reportedly arrested in Saudi Arabia May 14 for alleged terror links in India. But he has been untraced since then.

India to host Afghanistan investment summit

India will Thursday host an investment summit focusing on Afghanistan, aiming to attract foreign investment into the war-ravaged nation, a statement said.

The summit, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with support from the governments of India and Afghanistan, comes in the light of new opportunities opening up in various sectors in neighbouring country, according to the Indian ministry of external affairs (MEA).

The summit will include presentations by Afghanistan government and others on the investment climate and opportunities there, apart from panel discussions on cross-cutting issues as well as sector specific themes.

Potential regional and international investors, including companies from India, will participate in the event.

The ‘Delhi Investment Summit on Afghanistan’ is being organised in line with India’s long-term commitment to assisting the people and government of Afghanistan as they build a peaceful, pluralistic, democratic and prosperous Afghanistan, the MEA release said.

A Political Era ends with Pranob Da

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 05:35 PM PDT

Respected among friends and foes alike, Pranab Mukherjee, the “most perfected politician of the current lot”, will leave active politics Tuesday marking the end of an illustrious career spanning four decades in the Congress and government.

The redoubtable number two in the Manmohan Singh cabinet since 2004, Mukherjee has been the chief trouble shooter of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government.

The fact that he heads 83 out of the 183 group of ministers adds to his reputation for versatility, which few others can match.

Senior Congress leader Manishankar Aiyar said Mukherjee is unique as he can be firm and yet reach out to his opponents.

“He could be firm not only with leaders of other parties but with Congress leaders as well,” Aiyar told IANS.

Another trait Aiyar finds remarkable in Mukherjee is his “elephantine” memory on issues related to politics and governance.

The Bharatiya Janata Party too has nice words for him.

“Mukherjee is a seasoned politician and a good human being… he is a dedicated Congressman,” BJP’s national vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told IANS.

Mukherjee’s father Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee, a Congress politician, influenced him.

His political career started as a deputy minister for industrial development in 1973 and he became the finance minister in 1982, a post he holds currently.

His parliamentary career began in 1969 with a Rajya Sabha membership and he was nominated to the upper house until 2004 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from West Bengal’s Jangipur constituency.

The 76-year-old Mukherjee is a man of unparalleled experience and has served as commerce, foreign, defence and finance ministers.

While the accolades have been many, there are some brickbats too.

According to senior journalist Kuldeep Nayar, Mukherjee served the Congress well for over four decades but “the only blot on him was when he, as union commerce minister, went along with former prime minister Indira Gandhi, who declared emergency in 1975, and her son Sanjay Gandhi, who had become an extra constitutional authority.”

Opinion on how Mukherjee as finance minister managed a slowing down economy of late too is varied.

Nayar said Mukherjee failed as he became bereft of ideas in the past two years while presenting the general budgets.

“He is leaving the economy in a mess,” Nayar told IANS, adding “he perhaps was thinking more about his presidency.”

However, political commentator N. Bhaskara Rao described Mukherjee as the most perfected politician among the existing lot across parties as he understands national issues, can analyse them and always found a solution to a political crisis.”

“He was the most relied upon leader by the Congress while making its strategy whether the party was in power or not,” Rao told IANS.

Though Rao said his absence from the government would be worrying for the Congress as the country is facing an economic crisis, Aiyar said “the Congress is bigger than any individual and would find a replacement of Mukherjee.”

Kashmir shrine gutted, probe ordered

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 04:35 PM PDT

The revered Peer Dastgeer Sahib shrine in Srinagar was gutted Monday, sparking protest by angry youths. An official said the holy relic of the 11th century Muslim saint was safe and a probe has been ordered into the fire.

“The holy relic (a hair of the saint’s beard) was kept in a fire/burglary proof vault inside the shrine. The holy relic is safe and has been retrieved,” a senior official of the state government told IANS.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a probe into the incident that destroyed the wooden shrine of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani, better known as Peer Dastgeer Sahib.

Addressing a hurriedly convened press conference, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Sagar said Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Asgar Samoon would probe the reasons behind the blaze that destroyed the over 300-year-old shrine in the Khanyar area of the city.

Sagar, a legislator from Khanyar, said no effort would be spared to rebuild and restore the shrine.

Syed Khalid Hussain Jeelani, the custodian of the relics inside the shrine, has confirmed that all relics of the saint are safe.

“The holy relic (a hair of the saint’s beard), a historical manuscript of the Holy Quran and other relics are safe and have been retrieved from the shrine,” Jeelani said.

Both groups of separatist Hurriyat Conference headed by hardliner Syed Ali Geelani and moderate Mirwaiz Umer Farooq expressed shock at the incident and called for shutdown across the Kashmir Valley to mourn the tragedy.

Governor N.N. Vohra, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference patron Farooq Abdullah besides many other political and religious leaders also expressed regret over the fire incident.

Flames first appeared on the shrine’s roof around 6.30 a.m. and engulfed the entire wooden structure within minutes.

Dozens of fire tenders from fire service headquarters and adjoining areas were pressed into service to fight the blaze. But before it could be brought under control, the fire had destroyed the entire structure.

Scores of weeping and wailing devotees, especially women from the old city, gathered around the shrine praying loudly for the protection of the structure and the relics.

Markets in the old city shut down after the incident as police diverted all traffic from the old city to the uptown area.

Immediately after the blaze, youths resorted to heavy stone pelting at the police. A mob also attacked the Khanyar police station.

Police used tear smoke shells and batons to disperse the protestors.

As many as 20 people, including 10 protestors and 10 policemen, were injured in the daylong clashes.

A senior police officer said none of the injured has sustained any life threatening injury.

Interestingly, the saint, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani, who was born in the Mazandaran province of Iran in 1077 AD, never visited Kashmir.

An Afghan governor, Sardar Abdullah Khan, brought the relics to the valley 337 years ago and established these at the shrine.

The saint is known as Peer Dastgeer and Ghaus-e-Azam by Muslims and as Kahnoow by Hindus.

Political Parties plan event like Occupy Wall Street in Singur

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 06:50 AM PDT

With the Calcutta High Court striking down the law undoing the Singur land acquisition, CPI-M lawmaker Abdur Rezzak Mollah Sunday said he wants to organise an “Occupy Singur” movement on the lines of “Occupy Wall Street” for the benefit of the unwilling farmers of the rural belt.

“Yes, I am planning to launch “Occupy Singur” movement. It will be on the lines of the “Occupy Wall Street movement” that shook the entire world last year. Though the circumstances of the cases are totally different, the flavour of the movement will be same,” Mollah told IANS.

The veteran Communist, who was land reforms minister during the Left regime, is known as a loose cannon in political circles for his repeated out-of-turn remarks against a section of the party leadership, especially former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and former industries minister Nirupam Sen.

During his tenure as land reforms minister, Mollah had openly protested against the procedure of land acquisition in the Singur area of Hooghly district for the car plant.

On the “Occupy Singur” movement, he said the agitation will benefit the unwilling farmers of Singur who have received nothing and are leading a tough life after losing all means of livelihood.

“My movement is aimed at providing the unwilling farmers with a livelihood. We want that till the matter is resolved legally – as the state government is planning to go to the Supreme Court – either the unwilling farmers be allowed to cultivate their land inside the factory premises or they be provided with alternative fertile plot outside the plant area by the state government. This should be done so that they can at least feed their families,” said Mollah.

Lashing out at the state government, Mollah said it is pretending to stand by the farmers.

“The state government is saying they will stand by the farmers. But the fact is the farmers are dying there. How long will they fight poverty and hunger? They should be provided with the means of living,” he said.

The veteran communist also said he wants the Left, and democratic forces tocome out in support of the movement.

Delivering a jolt to Singur’s unwilling farmers, who had opposed land acquisition for Tata Motors’ Nano project in 2006, the Calcutta High Court Friday struck down as unconstitutional the Singur Singur Lan dRehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, which scrapped the land lease given to the automobile giant by the erstwhile Left Front regime.

The Occupy Wall Street campaign that began Sep 17 last year saw demonstrators camping out in New York’s financial district protesting against income inequality, corporate greed and the power of financial institutions.

Meanwhile,  Congress’  West Bengal unit Sunday said the Trinamool Congress-led state government must “introspect” to prevent any further mistakes.

“Neither industry nor agriculture, Singur has lost on both counts. The state government has lost the case in the high court. The state government needs a through introspection. If it doesn’t do that it will again commit a blunder,” said state Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharya.

Holding the land law, enacted by the state government last year to return land taken from the farmers as “unconstitutional”, the Calcutta High Court Friday ruled sections of compensation in the legislation were in conflict with the Land Acquisition Act, 1894.

A day later, the Mamata Banerjee government kick-started a damage control exercise by calling a meeting of a virtually defunct panel that had played a key role in the movement against farmland acquisition.

Banerjee, several of her cabinet colleagues and thinkers attended the meeting of the “Krishi Jami Jibon Jibika Rakha Committee (Save Agricultural Land, Life and Livelihood Committee)” which had spearheaded the movement for return of land to the farmers whose land the then Left Front regime had reportedly acquired against their will for Tata Motors’ Nano small car plant.

Agriculture Minister Rabindranath Bhattacharya said the committee has decided to start afresh the movement for return of land to the unwilling farmers.

Bhattacharya however said he would have been happy had the state government called an all party meeting to decide the next line of action on the issue.

“I would have been happy if the chief minister convened an all party meeting. I would welcome any move on the part of the government to call an all party meeting,” he said.

Amitabh Bachchan gives full Thumbs up to Gangs of Wasseypur

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 06:26 AM PDT

Gangs of WasseypurAmitabh Bachchan has given full Thumbs up to Gangs of Wasseypur. Impressed with the “stark” and “painfully real” portrayal of gang war in “Gangs of Wasseypur”, Amitabh Bachchan feels that director Anurag Kashyup has allowed the visuals to flow as they would and says he would “strongly” recommend it.

Based on a true story by Zeishan Quadri, the film is set in Wasseypur, Jharkhand, known for gang war between between gangster Faheem Khan and businessman Sabir Alam over a scrap business.

It ran houseful in most parts when it opened Friday and footfalls are said to be increasing.

“Quite undoubtedly the moment of the day has been the film ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ (GOW), which I have had the great privilege to see. Indian Cinema at its best, honest, stark and as painfully real as possible.

“For one that has been born and lived a major portion of his life in almost similar environment, or at least exposed to it to some degree, I found so much that I could well relate to. And that has led to the authenticity…,” Big B wrote on his blog, Bigb.bigadda.com, praising the crime thriller.

“Anurag Kashyap has not done any fancy shot taking and allowed the visuals to flow as they would, were one to be living those circumstances in real time,” he wrote.

The film is soaked in blood and revenge and has stellar performances by Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadha and Piyush Mishra.

The 69-year-old also praised the work of Manoj. They worked together in “Aks” and “Aarakshan”.

Amitabh wrote: “Manoj Bajpayee in particular, and of all the artists right down to the smallest in capacity and presence, has been beautifully done. No one looked or performed out of place. They just did enough and that was effective enough.”

“Importantly though, the film GOW touched and expanded on a topic that apart from the blood and gore and the violence educated us on a social issue which most of us may never have heard of. The disparities yes, on more social and moral levels, but also on a factor that concerns religion and the evil that exists within most of the polity even now about it.

“In all a glorious film and one that I would recommend strongly,” he wrote.

Prachi Desai happy with her role in I Me aur Main

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 05:22 AM PDT

Prachi Desai‘I, Me Aur Main’ is a perfect opportunity for me to change people’s perceptions about me,” says Prachi Desai who will be seen playing her age in the film. She adds that usually she has been offered roles older than her age.

” It is such a vivacious role. I don’t think people have normally seen me like that. The film is a perfect opportunity for me to change people’s perceptions about me,” she said.

Directed by debutant Kapil Sharma, John will be seen romancing five girls in “I, Me Aur Main”. Prachi is one of them.

She said: ” ‘I, Me Aur Main’ is a modern film. I play a girl who is very young. She just comes into John’s life and changes everything around him.”

The young actress started her career as the lead in TV show “Kasamh Se”, feels that the industry had a set perception about her and that nobody wanted to try her for new roles. According to her, she was always offered roles older to her.

“The reason for being offered roles much older than me was because that is the kind of role I had done on television. So, I guess, people wanted to stick to that. Nobody wanted to experiment with me. They just wanted to capitalise with what they had seen me as,” said the actress.

The 25-year-old made her big screen debut with “Rock On!” and later featured in “Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai”, “Life Partner” and recently released “Teri Meri Kahaani”.

Her next is Rohit Shetty’s “Bol Bachchan”. Releasing July 6, the film, which has Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead roles, is her first comedy and she is excited about it.

In our generation the players were shorter but we still got away because the game was skill based. But now the game has become faster and physical as well. India refuses to support Decision Review System

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 03:50 AM PDT

India has refused to change its stance on the controversial Decision Review System (DRS) even as the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) chief executive committee recommended its universal application in both Tests and ODIs.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) still believes that the DRS is not foolproof.

“We wish to clarify that while the DRS was discussed at the meeting, the BCCI’s stance on the same is unchanged,” said BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale.

“The BCCI continues to believe that the system is not foolproof. The Board also sticks to its view that the decision on whether or not to use the DRS for a particular series should be left to the Boards involved in that series,” he added.

The ICC chief executive committee during its two-day meeting in Kuala Lumpur recommended the universal application of the controversial Decision Review System (DRS) in both Tests and ODIs after being satisfied with independently conducted research.

The CEC, during its two-day meeting over the weekend, discussed the reviews. It was satisfied the technology enhancements provided by new Hotspot cameras and the results of the independent research on ball tracking conducted by Ed Rosten, an expert in computer vision technology.

Rosten had tested the accuracy and reliability of ball tracking in a recent Test series and concluded that the results were 100 percent in agreement with the outcomes produced from his assessments.

CEC accordingly recommended to the ICC Board that, subject to the members’ ability to finance and obtain the required technology, DRS should be mandatory for all Tests and ODIs.

The CEC also said that hotspot cameras must be included in the minimum requirements (two cameras) alongside ball tracking technology. The committee also made a a minor amendment to the LBW protocols whereby the ‘margin of uncertainty’ regarding the point of impact with the batsman should be the same as that provided for the point of impact with the stumps.

During the meeting it was also decided that the number of successful reviews will be retained at two per innings for a Test and one per innings for an ODI.

“We have made good progress in independently testing ball tracking and the new enhancements has resulted in the CEC unanimously supporting the ICC Cricket Committee’s recommendation to universally apply the DRS in all Test matches and ODIs,” said ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat.
